Richard Sloggett, baptised c1725, son of JOHN SLOGGETT and MARY RICKARD [married 15 October 1709 at St Breward, Cornwall], married Mary Hender on 13 August 1745 at Lewannick, Cornwall. It is possible that Richard had been baptised at Teath on 28 September 1723, son of John Sloggatt of Lanteglos [?near Camelford?]. It is likely that Mary had been baptised on 28 September 1721 at Lewannick [parents names not recorded].
Richard Sloggott and Mary Hender were the parents of (at least):
Richard Sloggett, born c1725, was buried on 15 December 1789 at Altarnun, Cornwall.
The parish registers of Altarnun, Cornwall, record that bachelor Richard Sloggott of Altarnun and spinster Jane Gross of Altarnun married on 15 December 1789. Richard had been born/baptised on 27 June 1762 at Lewannick, a son of RICHARD SLOGGETT and MARY HENDER.
Jane Gross is likely to have been the Jane Grous baptised privately at Altarnun on 3 October 1769, parents WILLIAM GROSE of Linkinhorne and JANE MULLIS [probably baptised on 28 November 1871 at Altarnun, a child of John and Jane Mullis] who were married on 2 July 1758 at Altarnun after publication of Banns. A child, John Grose, was buried at Altarnun on 13 March 1765. Richard Sloggott and Jane Gross.
Richard and Jane were the parents of:
Jane Slogget, 49, of Trenarrett, Altarnun, was buried at St Clether on 15 December 1817 [born circa 1768].
Richard Sloggett, aged 82, of Treween?, was buried at Altarnun on 20 April 1842 [born circa 1760].
The basis for the following sections on John Sloggett and his descendants is largely the extensive information from Bruce Topperwien [*, 04nov2011], augmented by reference to primarily three sources: the Cornwall OPC database [†], South Australian BDM indexes [‡, via www.ancestry.com] and the on-line IGI [§].
Carpenter John Slugget, born in January 1792 and baptised to RICHARD and JANE on 21 February 1792 at Altarnun†, married Margery Bray at St Clether, Cornwall, on 6 May 1817†. Margery, daughter of THOMAS BRAY and MARGERY DINGLE [bachelor and spinster married at St Clether on 9 December 1788†], had been baptised at St Clether on 6 May 1798†. John and Margery were the parents of some ten children:
Margery Sloggett née Bray of Nairne died age 67 on 18 August 1865 at Nairne, South Australia.
John Sloggett died age 77 on 11 July 1869 at Nairne, South Australia. Adelaide's South Australian Register of Saturday 14 August 1869 (p 4s) noted “SLOGGETT.-On the 11th July, at Nairne, John Sloggett, late of Laneast, Cornwall, England, aged 77 years, greatly respected by all who knew him.”
Nairne, a small township east of Adelaide and about 7km from Mount Barker, was on the main road from Adelaide to Sydney [rf http://nairne.org.au/history.htm].
Richard Slugget was born 16 January 1817* and baptised 20 January 1818 at Laneast, Cornwall, son of Church Town carpenter JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY at Altarnun, emigrated to South Australia, perhaps via Ontario.
Richard Sloggett, carpenter, resident of Laneast, son of carpenter John Sloggett, married Cherry Stephens, spinster, of full age, resident of Laneast and daughter of farmer EDWARD STEPHENS, at Laneast on 25 February 1841. The 6 June 1841 census shews the Richard, 24, and Charity, 15, at Laneast [ages of people over 15 years old were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years].
Richard and Cherry emigrated to Ontario, Canada, and by the time if the 1851 Agricultural Census Richard Sloggette possessed a concenssion of 11 acres.
Richard (53, carpenter) and Cherry (47), Bible Christians fron England, are listed in the 1871 Canadian census at Seymour, Northumberland East, Ontario.
Cherry Sloggett, housekeeper, Bible Christian, died on 8 June 1876 in the district of York, Toronto, Ontario, aged 52.
Richard later emigrated to South Australia. Perplexingly, at some time between June 1876 in Ontario and July 1877 in South Australia, it appears that Richard married Harriett, who died in October 1878 at Nairne, South Australia.
Richard Sloggett, son of John Sloggett, married Elizabeth Davey née Libby [daughter of RICHARD LEBBY] on 3 July 1877 at the residence of Richard Sloggett, Nairne; it seems that Richard was a widower at the time. It is thought that Elizabeth Libby had previously been married to John Davey – they had eight children and their sixth child Sarah married a John Simpson Rayson. Sarah and John had three children: Cliff, Gertrude and Taryl. Taryl was the grandfather of Christine Denton (pers comm 01apr2014).
Jennifer Sloggett [04mar1998] on the RootsWeb discussion list had “… Strong evidence that Richard (b. c.1818) listed in 1871 Census (Seymour) is Richard Sloggett christened 28 Feb 1818, Laneast, CORNWALL, son of John and Margery, joined parents and siblings in South Australia by 1877 when he married as a widower. His obituary refers to time spent in Canada. His parents and siblings migrated in the 1850s. Other descendants of Richard and Jane migrated to New South Wales, Australia, 1839”. Jennifer was “Seeking descendants and fellow researchers of SLOGGETT, Counties of Northumberland and Peterborough, including Seymour, Coburg, Oshawa, Mariposa, Elderslie. Christian names William, Richard, John, Edward, James, and Thomas listed in 1871 Census of Canada and Ontario Cemetery List. Believe these are descendants of Richard SLOGGETT and Jane GROSS, of parishes of Altarnun, Laneast and Lewannick, CORNWALL, due to use of family christian names and recurrent occupations (wheelwright, caprenter, cabinet maker). …”
Elizabeth Sloggett died aged 58 at Sawpit Gully, Dawesley, on 12 March 1894, the death registered at Nairne. It appears Elizabeth was the daughter of miller RICHARD and MARY LIBBY of Trevibban Downs, and had been baptised at Little Petherick, Cornwall, on 14 June 1836. Adelaide's The Advertiser of Saturday 24 March 1894 (p4) noted :
SLOGGETT.— On the 12th March, at East Nairne, of heart disease, Elizabeth, wife of Richard Sloggett, aged 68. Melbourne papers please copy.”
Adelaide's The Advertiser of Wednesday 13 March 1895 (p4) noted:
IN MEMORIAM. SLOGGETT.—In loving remembrance of Elizabeth Hoskin Sloggett, who died suddenly at East Nairne on the eve of March 12, 1894. Forget thee, loved one! not till death Hath closed our eyes and stilled our breath Shall we forget or cease to mourn That we are left and thou art gone. —Inserted by her loving husband and children.
Richard Sloggett of East Nairne died aged 78 at Nairne [Native Valley] on 20 December 1895, his death registered at Nairne. Transcribing headstones at Nairne Cemetery, Julie Lehmann recorded:
*
Sloggett, Elizabeth Hoskin (Libby), b. 14 Sep 1836 Lansallos, Cornwall, d. 13 Mar 1894, age: 58yr, w/o John Davey, Lot 215
* Sloggett, James, d. 14 Apr 1886, Lot 254
* Sloggett, Harriet, d. 29 Oct 1878, Lot 159, w/o Richard Sloggett. [If Richard was a widower when he married Elizabeth, perhaps the 1878 should be 1876.]
* Sloggett, Richard, b. 16 Jan 1817, d. 20 Dec 1895, age: 78yr, h/o Harriet Sloggett, Lot 159]
[Death certificates could clarify these relationships.]
A Harriett Sloggett, daughter of John Sloggett, married Daniel Stephens [son of Daniel Stephens] on 18 June 1880 at the residence of James Henry, North Adelaide, South Australia. [That Harriett was more likely the base-born daughter of Richard's sister Margery (see below)].
A full age bachelor labourer William Hoskin Sloggett, of St Breoke, son of […] driver Robert Sloggett, married full age spinster Elizabeth Jane Hewett of St Breoke, daughter of labourer John Hewett, at St Breoke Parish Church, Cornwall, on 27 July 1878, after publications of Banns, witnessed by J Hewett and Francis Bunton.
Jane Slugget, baptised 13 June 1819 at Laneast, Cornwall, was a daughter of Church Town carpenter JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY. Jane is likely to have been the Jane Sloggett, spinster of full age of Laneast and daughter of carpenter John Sloggett, who married James Harry, bachelor labourer of full age of Laneast and son of labourer Charles Harry, on 4 April 1848 at Laneast.
Margery Sloggett, baptised 17 June 1821 at Laneast, Cornwall, was a daughter of Church Town carpenter JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY. Margery Sloggett, age 56, died on 20 October 1878 at Nairne, South Australia [indexes have her a daughter of ANN]. The South Australian Register of Thursday 24 October 1878 (p4) noted: “SLOGGETT.— On the 20th October, at Nairne. Margery Sloggett, aged 56 years. Her end was peace.”
Perhaps it was Margery identified as Magey, single woman of Laneast, for whom Harriett Sloggett was baptised on 8 December 1850 at Laneast in Cornwall. As Harriett Stephens (aged 75, mother 'unknown'), Harriett died on 17 October 1926 at Kaniva, Victoria. Harriett had married Daniel Stephens on 18 June 1880 in North Adelaide; Daniel was born in 1860 at Willunga, South Australia and died on 12 February 1916 in Kaniva, Victoria. Children of Harriett Sloggett and Daniel Stephens were Joseph Stephens (born 22 December 1880 at Maitland, South Australia, died 28 June 1946), Ellen Margery Stephens (born 2 June 1883 at Maitland, South Australia, died 27 November 1946), Sidney Claude Stewart Stephens (born 20 April 1885 at Maitland, South Australia, died 20 July 1966 in Victoria), Daniel Horatio Algernon Stephens (born 10 May 1887 at Maitland, South Australia, died 7 October 1887 at Maitland, aged five months) and Daniel Horatio Algernon Stephens (born [David H.A.S] 19 May 1889 at Maitland, South Australia, died aged 73 on 21 May 1962 at Kaniva, Victoria).
Thomas Sloggett, baptised 4 May 1823 at Laneast, Cornwall, was a son of Church Town labourer JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY. Full-age bachelor carpenter Thomas Sloggett of Laneast, son of carpenter John, married full-age spinster Catherine Bant of Laneast, daughter of farmer William, on 25 April 1848 at Laneast. Catherine had been born in 1824 at in South Petherwin. Thomas and Catherine were parents of:
Thomas, Catherine and their then two children emigrated to South Australia, departing Plymouth on 26 February 1854 aboard the barque Fortune, arriving at Port Adelaide, South Australia on 6 June 1854: “Sloggett, Thomas, 30. Carpenter, Cornwall; Catherine (Bant), 29; Richard, 4; Louisa, 2”. Also aboard the Fortune were Thomas' siblings John Sloggett, 18, a miner from Cornwall, Ann Sloggett, 19, a servant from Cornwall and Grace Sloggett, 23, a servant from Cornwall.
Thomas Sloggett, died 10 July 1908 at Millicent, South Australia and was buried in Millicent Cemetery. Catherine died 3 March 1906 at Millicent, South Australia.
Probably not closely related, a Charles Christopher Sloggett, son of Thomas Sloggett, married Jane Priscilla Drage (born 23 October 1861 at Tothills Creek, South Australia, daughter of William Drage and Jane (Jean) Cargill), at Laura near Clare, South Australia, on 15 March 1883. Adelaide's The South Australian Advertiser of Saturday 14 April 1883 noted: “SLOGGETT—DRAGE.—On the 15th March, at St. John's Church, by the Rev. J. H. Corvan, Charles Christopher Sloggett, to Priscilla Jane, third daughter of William Drage, and granddaughter of J. Drage Esq., Rudham, Norfolk.” The South Australian Advertiser of Saturday 5 April 1884 (p4) noted: “BIRTHS. SLOGGETT.—On the 28th March, at Laura, Jane, the wife of Mr. C. Sloggett, of a son. Mother doing well.” Laura is about 195km north of Adelaide. The death of Priscilla Jane Sloggett, aged 38, daughter of William Drage and Jane Cargill, was registered in Western Australia in 1897. Some researchers have Priscilla's husband identified as Charles Phillip Sloggett, born 1859 at Morphettville, South Australia and died 16 February 1896 at age 37, and ascribed parents Thomas Sloggett and Catherine Bant.
Mary Sloggett, baptised 6 November 1825 at Laneast, Cornwall, was a daughter of Church Town carpenter JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY.
Full-age bachelor carpenter James Sloggett of Laneast, baptised 10 February 1828 at Laneast, Cornwall, son of carpenter JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY, married full-age spinster Ann Wise of Laneast, daughter of labourer WILLIAM WISE, at Laneast on 14 October 1851. Ann was born in 1829.
James and Ann were parents of:
James Sloggett died on 21 November 1877 at Nairne or Millicent, South Australia). The South Australian Register of Friday 23 November 1877 (p4) and Adelaide's The South Australian Advertiser of Saturday 1 December 1877 (p15) noted: “SLOGGETT.— On the 21st November, at his residence, Nairne, James Sloggett, after a lingering illness, aged 49 years. Deeply regretted by a large circle of friends. Cornish papers please copy.”
Ann Sloggett née Wise died on 20 May 1907 at Nairne, South Australia, The Advertiser of Tuesday 21 May 1907 (p4) noting: “SLOGGETT.— On the 20th May, Ann, widow of the late James Sloggett, aged 78 years, at her late residence, Nairne, after a short illness. A colonist of 56 years, leaving 2 sons and 2 daughters and 9 grandchildren to mourn their loss. Deeply regretted.”
Grace Slugget, baptised 22 August 1830 at Laneast, Cornwall, daughter of carpenter JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY, emigrated to Australia aboard the Fortune, arriving in Port Adelaide on 6 June 1854, aged 23. Grace married Roger Percy at Blakiston, South Australia, on 26 November 1860, as registered at Mount Barker. Roger, son of WILLIAM PERCY and ANN SLEEP, had been born in 1829 in Lamerton, Devon.
Roger and Grace were parents of:
Roger Percy, aged 77, died at Nairne on 11 January 1906. Grace Percy, aged 78, died at Nairne on 15 October 1908.
John Sloggett was baptised 20 January 1833 at Laneast, Cornwall, son of JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY†. Perhaps John was buried on 17 September 1833 at Laneast [his early demise would explain the naming of his brother in 1837; Cornwall OPC Christopher Dean noted the burial date when transcribing John's birth details, but when transcribing the burial details noted age 23†].
Ann Sloggett, baptised 5 October 1834 at Laneast, Cornwall, daughter of Laneast carpenter JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY, apparently emigrated to Australia aboard the Fortune, arriving in Port Adelaide on 6 June 1854, aged 1. Ann married John Bassett on 15 September 1855 at North Adelaide. John, son of JOHN BASSETT and ANN HICKS CHEESEWORTH, was born 1 June 1837 and baptised on 18 June 1836/7 on the Wesleyan Bodmin Circuit, Cornwall.
Ann and John were parents of:
John Bassett died on 25 August 1865 at Macaw Creek, South Australia. Ann Basset née Sloggat died aged 46 on 5 April 1882 at Riverton, South Australia.
John Sloggett, baptised 26 September 1837 at Laneast, Cornwall, son of Laneast carpenter JOHN SLOGGET and MARGERY BRAY.
It appears John Sloggett emigrated to Australia aboard the Fortune, arriving in Port Adelaide on 6 June 1854, aged 18, and died aged 50, of Nairne, on 27 September 1890 in Adelaide.
William Sloggett, baptised to RICHARD and JANE on 31 August 1794 at Altarnun, married Jane Parsons at Laneast, Cornwall, on 4 April 1820. Jane was probably the Jane Parsons baptised on 8 April 1798 at St Clether, daughter of PHILIP and ELIZABETH. William and Jane appear to have been the parents of:
The baptism of this last child indicates that most of this family remained in Cornwall. The 1841 census shews the family at Higher Gunnon, Altarnun:

A William Sloggett, aged '41', of Altarnun, was buried at Altarnun on 12 November 1841.
The 1851 census shews a Jane Sloggett, widowed, aged '55', born Laneast, a 'Nurse Tender' servant in the household of Thomas and Elizabeth Trease at Tremeer, St Clether. The 1861 census shews Thomas (66) and Jane (61, born St Clether) married and at Tremear: their marriage had been registered in 4Q1860.
The death of Jane Trayes formerly Sloggett was registered in the Camelford district in 4Q1864.
Note: a bachelor William Slogget of Jacobstow [Phillimore has Warbstow] and spinster sojourner Alice Parsons had married by licence on 26 December 1803 at Davidstow Cornwall, witnessed by Edward Jenkin.
Elizabeth Vincent Sloggett, baptised 31 December 1820 at Altarnun Cornwall, daughter of farmer WILLIAM SLOGGETT and his wife JANE PARSONS; married William Edward Beddome in Adelaide, South Australia, and accompanied him to Tasmania on the Punch. It appears, confusingly, they were the parents of:
In 1850 William was charged for stealing as noted in several news reports:
** The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW), Saturday 25 May 1850 (p5):
Colonial News.
The Robbery of the Commissariat Chest.— On Friday last William Edward Beddome was again brought up at the police office, on remand on the charge of stealing 500 sovereigns from the Commissariat chest. Additional evidence was called, proving that about the latter end of March Beddome was collecting a large quantity of silver coin ; that he had made enquiries about the sailing of the Samuel Boddington, professedly for a friend, some days before she left; and that he had paid three different persons sums In gold in March and April. He was, at the close of the examination, fully committed for trial.—Abridged from the South Australian, April 29.
** The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, Wednesday 5 June 1850 p4
The Commissariat Robbery.—On the 20th and 21st, in the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court, William Edward Beddome was tried for the robbery of 500 sovereigns from the commissariat chest. The evidence given was fuller, but the same in effect as that given before the police bench. Mr. Fisher, in defence, contended that there was no satisfactory proof that the bags alleged to have been broken open and robbed ever contained the 1,000 sovereigns each they were supposed to hold, and that there was nothing but the slightest circumstantial evidence to affect his client. The jury returned a verdict of guilty. Beddome was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.—Abridged from the Adelaide Times, May 22.
** South Australian Register (Adelaide), Tuesday 13 August 1850 (p3):
FURTHER DELINQUENCIES OF THE LATE COMMISSARIAT CLERK BEDDOME.
We refrained from stating fully the particulars of the recently discovered delinquencies of Beddome ' the expatriated adept,' because we thought such information reaching him before the authorities had determined on the propriety of instituting fresh proceedings, might probably induce him to make another effort to escape beyond the reach of justice. Such considerations, however, did not operate to prevent others from stating all that was known or surmised on the subject, consequently there can be no advantage in withholding from our readers the following depositions taken before the Police Commissioner, and which are to be transmitted to the Lords of the Treasury. Pending their decision as to future proceedings, we doubt not the Local Government will eujoin on the authorities of Van Diemen's Land the duty of maintaining a vigorous surveillance over the delinquent.
Edward Moore, Captain of the 11th regiment, sworn — The bill produced, No. 85, dated 23rd August, 1849. was forwarded to me by the Secretary of the Lords of the Treasury. It purports to be for £335, and to have been drawn by W. H. Maturin. Assistant Commissary-General, upon the Lords of the Treasury. A signature appears on the bill purporting to be mine ; it is not my signature — it is intended to resemble mine ; I cannot say whose handwriting it is. I knew William Edward Beddome. the Commissariat Clerk ; I do not knew his writing particularly ; the bill I have spoken of is the first of a set ; the third of the same set is produced ; my signature has been forged upon it also ; there is some difference between the two forged signatures of E. Moore, Captain 11th Regiment, Comg. S. A.
William Henry Maturin, sworn— William Edward Beddome was a clerk of the Commissariat department under my orders ; he was reting as temporary clerk at this station when I arrived in 1843, since which he was appointed a permanent clerk by the Lords of the Treasury. He absconded on the 13th April last; he was apprehended by the police, and subsequently convicted for robbing the Commissariat-chest of the sum of £570 ; he was transported for the offence for the term of seven years. While he was in the office, since his permanent appointment, he has had the custody of the bill-books, and been entrusted with the duty of drawing out the bills ; no other person had ordinary access to the press in which those book were deposited ; he kept the key. The bill produced lor £335. dated 23rd August, 1849, purporting, to be drawn by me, was not drawn by me; the signature of W. H. Maturin, Asst Comy. Genl., is a forgery ; the set of terms upon which these bills are drawn has been extracted from a new spare book of forms of bills, which waa kept with the stationery. Captain Moore having shown me this forged bill, I looked at the spare bill-book and found that two sets had been very carefully cut out of it ; the hand writing of the body of the bill is that of William Edward Beddome, whose sigsature is also at the bottom of the bill, in accordance with the Commissariat instructions. The signature of W. H. Maturin is evidently meant to resemble mine ; to me it appears a bad imitation, but it might deceive any person not well acquainted with it. I sign my name usually without taking off the pen ; this forged signaure is wriiten each letter seperately. Captain Moore's signature is forged to the bill in a different ink. The first three letters of the name Sullivan, endorsed upon the bill, resemble Beddome's writing ; there is a Greenwich pensioner named John Suilivan, several of whose signatures I produce; there is some resemblance between these and the John Sullivan endorsed on the forged bill. The receipts and declaration to which Sullivan's real signature is attached are in Beddome's handwriting ; John Sullivan has a pension of ten pounds twelve shillings per annum ; it has not been commuted ; Sullivan has never had any claim on the Com- missariat beyond the amount of his pension ; the forged signatures of myself and Captain Moore to the bill are in the handwriting of William Edward Beddome; the spare biil-book was kept with other blank books in an inner room, the door ot which was separately locked ; John Sullivan received pension at my office in April, 1849, and December, 1849 ; he was not to my knowledge at the office between those periods ; had he been there, the probability is that he would have received that portion of his pension becoming payable after the 30th June ; the triplicate bill produced is the third of the set of which I have spoken to the first; the signature- of W. H. Marturin and E. Moore to that are also forgeries, and in the handwriting of Beddome.
Neville Blyth, Hindley-street, ironmonger, sworn— I knew William Edward Beddome, Commissariate Clerk— I knew him for ten years ; he was an occasional customer at our shop. He several times referred persons to us (Blyth Brothers) to get their bills discounted — contractors of Commissariat supplies. On some occasions we gave him cheques, and he wouid afterwards bring the bills. About the 24th August, 1849, he came alone; he had one one or two interviews with me. He said an individual had a bill to dispose of, which he had received, or was to receive, for a commuted pension ; the amount was £335 ; I agreed to purchase it at one per cent premium. On the 24th August I gave him a cheque fur £338 7s. He brought me a set of bills the same day, of which the first and third are now produced. They were in one sheet ; each was endorsed 'John Sullivan.' Beddome said that John Sullivan was a pensioner, who was commuting his pension. Having had similar transactions before with Beddome, I had no hesitation in purchasing the set of bills. The first of the set was remitted to James Creswick Blyth, of Manchester. merchant, an uncle of mine. The second was afterwards sent to the same person; the third remained in my possession till a few days ago, when I handed it over to the police-clerk, Mr Paurucker. When I had the last iuterview with Mr Beddome respecting these bills, he said he had got into trouble through Mr Maturin having discovered that he had divided the premium with Sullivan. I advised him to tell Mr Maturin what he had done ; he said he had denied to Mr Maturin having divided the premium ; he said he would, and subsequently and me be had done so ; I asked him if he knew of any others ; he said that Captain Perham was to have bills, but he was too hard a nail to deal with ad- vantageously ; I asked him to refer Captain Perham to me in case of his receiving the bill; he said he would do so ; I never saw Perham on the subject of buying bills, nor did I ever hear of his having any to dispose of. I have purchased Commissariat bills since from Mr Wotherspoon, who had received them for rent of barracks; I did not purchase any others from Beddome afterwards; I heard no more about it till my brother Arthur Blyth returned from England about a week ago.
Arthur Blyth, sworn — I am a partner in the house of Blyth Brothers ; I was in Manchester in the month of November, 1840, acting as confidential clerk to my uncle, James Creswick Blyth, a merchant ; he received a remittance from Blyth Brothers, of Adelaide, including the bill produced, the first of a set for £335 on the Lords of the Treasury, and appearing to be signed by W. H. Maturin. I got it discounted by James Sewell ; my uncle's endorsement is upon it, and also James Sewell's. In March I received a letter addressed to my uncle from the Lords of the Treasury ; I wrote a reply ; the second of the same set was duly received, and filed by Jammes Creswick Blyth ; the the name. W. H. Maturin, to the bill appears to me to be in Beddome's hand writing ; it certainly it not Mr Maturin's; when I saw it in Manchester I did not closely examine it ; I knew Beddome well and often saw him write; his genuine signature in at the foot of the bill ; I do not know any person of the name of Sullivan ; the endorsement of John Sullivan at the back of the bills has some resemblance to Beddome's writing.
Samuel Beddome, Clerk of the Police-court, sworn — I know William Elward Beddome ; I was acquainted with his hand-writing ; his signaiture is at the foot of the two bills produced, tbe first and third of a set purporting to be drawn by W. II. Maturin upon the Lords of the Treasury, for £335, dated South Australia, 23rd August, 1849, counersigned E. Moore. The body ot the bills is in William Edward Beddome's hand writing. I am not acquainted with Mr Maturin's signature; the name W. H. Muturin to these bills is certainly not his handwriting, though evidentiy intended to resemble it.
In 1856 William appeared on a list of persons entitled to be on the Tasmanian Electoral Roll [Launceston Examiner (Tas.), Saturday 26 April 1856):
HOBART TOWN. LIST of Persons entitled to be placed on the Electoral Roll for the return of Members of the House of Assembly for the Electoral District of Hobart Town :— Christian Name Place of Nature of Particulars of and Surname Abode. Qualification.
… Beddome, William Edward, Harrington street, occupancy, Harrington street, ditto [house] …
William Edward Beddome was, in Tasmania, declared to be insolvent from 22 May 1858 and 26 February 1859. A list of Residents in Hobart for the mid-1860s lists “BEDDOME William E. Liverpool Street”.
The Mercury (Hobart) on Saturday 12 October 1867 (p2) reported:
LAW. POLICE COURT. Friday, 11th October 1867.
Wages— Beddome v. Manley.— This was an information by William Edward Beddome against John H. Manley to recover a sum of £14, wages due. The information was under the Masters and Servants Act. Defendant showed no cause, and an order was made for the amount.
The death of Elizabeth Venson Beddome on 6 June 1872, aged 52, was registered in Hobart tas. On Tuesday 30 July 1872 The Mercury (p1) announced William's demise:

Jane Sloggett, second child of labourer WILLIAM SLOGGETT and JANE PARSONS, was baptised at Altarnun, Cornwall, on 6 April 1823. Jane Sluggard emigrated to New South Wales in the Argyle, arriving in Sydney with her paternal uncles Joe and Thomas (and the latter's family) on 1 April 1839. The marriage of Jane Sloggitt and John Westaway was solemnised at St Phillip's CoE Sydney in 1839. John had also emigrated from England aboard the Argyle (as per the extract from the Shipping Agent's Logs below:

Jane's age in the Agent's Logs implies a birth-year of 1823, suggesting she was the daughter of William and Jane Sloggett, baptised at Altarnun on 6 April 1823; William was baptised in 1794 and brother of Thomas and Joseph.
Jane and John Westaway's children included.
The Westaway family is a subject of sheila@yeosociety.com's WebPage "The Westaways of Eagle Farm, Queensland, Australia" on http://westawayfamily.co.uk/Biographies/Johnwestaway&JaneSloggett.htm [accessed 27mar2009, part of the "Westaway One Name Study"], an extract from which has:
John Westaway had left his native Devonshire to come to New South Wales aboard the Argyle which sailed out of Plymouth in 1838 under the command of Captain John Gatenay. Among the 295 people aboard were the Sloggett family from Cornwall. With this family was 16 year old Jane Sloggett (therefore born about 1822) who was accompanying her two uncles and their families. Although John was 29 years old, it made little difference; he fell in love with young Jane during the voyage and the couple were married in Sydney twenty four days after the Argyle dropped the anchor in Sydney harbour.
After their marriage, the Westaways travelled to the township of Orange with the Sloggett families, then on to the "Willows" at Oberon, and during their stay John farmed with some success. Jane gave birth to their first child. A girl named Mary Ann born in 1841.
News of the opening up of the former convicts settlement of Moreton Bay for farming prompted John to tender for land when the first auctions were announced in 1842. He was delighted when informed that his bid for a block of 100 acres had been accepted.
The death of Jane Westaway née Sloggett [index has Stoggitt], 'born England, aged 90 years, was registered in Queensland in 1913: her parent's are noted in the Queensland Registrar's index as parents indexed as 'Thomas and Catherine', perhaps as she had emigrated to NSW in their company.
William Sloggett, born 1824, baptised 1 January 1825, Altarnun, Cornwall, was the third child and eldest son of WILLIAM SLOGGETT and JANE PARSONS. In a Presbyterian ceremony at Bathurst NSW in 1850, he married Ann Phair (born c1825), the couple having twelve children:

Some of theses are obviously children of William and Ann, some may be children-in-law or grandchildren.
William Sloggett, aged 83, son of WILLIAM and JANE, was buried on 30 July 1908 in the Oberon General Cemetery; Ann Sloggett née Phair, aged 82, daughter of THOMAS and JANE, was interred in the same grave on 26 August 1909.

John Andrew Short, son of SAMUEL and AGNES, died aged 85 years on 17 April 1918 [his death was registered Bathurst]; he was buried with Ann and Walter Samuel Short [died aged 75 years on 22 November 1920, also a son of SAMUEL and AGNES] at White Rock Cemetery].
James Dietrich photographed and listed every visible inscription in the tiny White Rocks Cemetery in March 2007; the Short family is well represented in his data on http://cemindex.arkangles.com/cemetery.php?id=299.
A significant amount of the information in this section is taken from Graeme Moad's Moad Website [accessed 16aug2010, http://homepage.mac.com/graememoad/] which is in good agreement with other on-line and off-line sources.
Richard Sloggett, baptised 10 March 1833 at Mary Magdalene Wesleyan Church, Launceston, Cornwall, son of THOMAS SLOGGETT and CATHERINE JENKIN SLEEP, arrived in NSW in the Argyle on 1 April 1839 with his parents and siblings. Richard married Phillippa R (or Karnick) Short in a Wesleyan Methodist ceremony at White Rock near Bathurst on the Bathurst - Hill End circuit on 1 November 1855. Phillipa, born 9 April 1835 in Cornwall, was the daughter of SAMUEL SHORT and AGNES ANDREWS. Children of Richard and Phillipa included:

The death of Mary Eliza Sloggett, formerly Short, née Johnstson, on 8 February 1917, aged 75 years, daughter of JOHN and AMELIA, was registered at Bathurst. It appears that Mary Eliza Sloggett, her husbands William Husband Short and Richard Sloggett and Walter Richard Short, her son by William, whose death on 12 March 1877, aged 5 years and 9 months [the death registered at Bathurst], are buried together.
The birth of Samuel Thomas Sloggett, son of RICHARD SLOGGETT and PHILLIPA SHORT, was registered at Bathurst in 1857. Samuel's marriage to Elizabeth S Fe(e)ney was registered at Bathurst in 1895. It seems that Elizabeth S Feeney was the same person as Elizabeth Sabina Lovett.
[Note: The births of three children were registered to a Samuel and Caroline E Sloggett between 1883 and 1886: Marian J (1883, Paddington), Lillian May (1885, Redfern) and Frank D (1886, Redfern): they may or may not be related to the Sloggetts detailed in this work.]

Mary, born 5 November 1861 at Singleton, was the daughter of JOHN SYMINGTON (born 1835) and REBECCA STEWART (born 1837). Mary's siblings included Charles J Simington (born Armidale, 1865), Annie E Simington (born Armidale, 1867) and Margaret Simington (born Armidale, 1869). Herbert and Mary were the parents of:
Herbert E Sloggett died 17 November 1908 at Parramatta [Christian names of parents indexed as Richard and Phillipie]. . His widow Mary Jane subsequently married William Austin as registered at Armidale in 1913. Mary Jane Austin formerly Sloggett née Symington died 26 March 1952 at Armidale.
John and Rebecca had married at in the Clogher district of South Tyrone, Ireland, in 1856.
Matthew Baker eMailed [14 August 2010]: "I am a descendant of Annie Elizabeth Baker (née Symington), sister of Mary Jane. Have you any more information on their parents, John Symington and Rebecca Stuart/Stewart of Co. Fermanagh? Interestingly, on Annie Elizabeth's death certificate, her mother is erroneously listed as Rebecca Sloggett".
Matthew Baker added [30 August 2010]i:
"John and Rebecca Symington were assisted immigrants from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh in Ulster and arrived NSW on the Hotspur, February 24 1861, with their eldest son, William James. The ship's record is available online though the online reel - the surname appears as Simington. They were protestant and had married ca 1857, but I have not sighted a marriage record.
Rebecca's death certificate (4399/1909) gives June 14 1909 as the date of death, with 9 living children. Burial - C of E in Armidale cemetery. Father: Charles Stuart, Mother: Ann Hazard. Mary Jane and Annie Elizabeth are amongst the 9 children.
John died 1895 in Parramatta. (13748/1895) I have not seen this one.
Annie Elizabeth (b.1867 d.May 5 1927) married my great grandfather William Alfred Baker (b.1861 d.9 Dec 1927) in Tamworth, July 16 1884. They first lived at Saumarez Ponds and then for 40 years at Wyatt's Creek in Jeogla where Alf ran a sawmill and grazed sheep. Alfred Baker is a descendant of the Gentles, one of the pioneering families of the district.
I do not know what the relationship is with the other Armidale Symingtons is, if any. There is no James amongst the 9 children of John and Rebecca, although there is William James, their eldest. I find it curious that Rebecca Symington is wrongly called Rebecca Sloggett on Annie's death certificate. It may indicate a close relationship between the families. I saw a picture of Mary Jane on Ancestry.com and there is certainly a family resemblance with her sister Annie. …"

My Great Grandfather George Alexander Sloggett and his wife Clara (nee Thomas) went to New Zealand in either 1904 or 1905 approx. Looking for any information on why they went - the family think he went over there mining but we don't know for sure. They adopted a little girl whilst in NZ and called her Maisie.

… I have been researching the Sloggett family history for some time now and yesterday went to White Rock cemetery and also to Oberon cemetery. What a surprise I got last night when I came across your name and all the Sloggett details. I found my father's name there even though he is not in a direct line with William and Anne. (Kenneth Sloggett). Richard Sloggett who is buried in White Rock cemetery is my great, great grandfather. My great, great, great grandparents Thomas and Catherine arrived on the "Argyle" in 1839 and are both buried in Bathurst cemetery. Do you know when William arrived in Australia ? Did his father, William ever come here.
ps. Also went to Sloggett Road in Oberon yesterday. Is that where William and his family lived?

DEATH OF ERNEST RANDOLF SLOGGETT
There passed away at Granville on January 19 a well known Manildra resident in the person of Mr. Ernest Randolf Sloggett. He was born at Condobolin and later came to Manildra with his parents, where his father acquired a property some five miles out on the Gumble road. The late Mr. Sloggett and his brothers followed the trade of carpenters and builders and I suppose half the buildings at least in the town of Manildra were erected by the Sloggett Bros. Some twenty years ago Mr. Sloggett, with his wife and family, removed to Granville, where he has resided practically ever since. He has been an invalid for several years and passed away at the age of 76 years. He left to mourn his loss his widow, three daughters and one son, viz., Irene (Mrs. Davies, of Helensburg), Emily (Mrs. Rush, Granville), Thelma (Mrs. Cooper, Granville), and Oliver, of Concord. Another son, Harley, served in the great war, and paid the supreme sacrifice. Two other sons predeceased him in their infancy. He is also survived by three brothers, Herbert, of Granville, and William and Harley, both of Manildra. A service was held at the Funeral Parlors, Granville, prior to leaving for the Methodist portion of Rookwood cemetery. The services at both chapel and graveside were conducted by the local Presbyterian Minister at Granville. Noticed among the large number present were many one-time residents of Manildra, paying their last respects to a member of a well known family who had earned a reputation for straightfonvard dealing both in their public and private lives.
The death of Annie Sloggett on 17 March 1964, aged 83, 'late of Parramatta', daughter of HENRY and SARAH, was noted in The Sydney Morning Herald the next day.

Bev Riley considers that Jane married Robert Blackman: a Jane Sloggett and Robert Blackman had married in a Presbyterian ceremony at Bathurst in 1855. A Jane Blackman née Sloggett, indexed as the daughter of JOHN, died 14 February 1922 (inferred birth c1837), the wife of Robert (who died aged 91 years on 27 October 1925, son of ROBERT and ELIZABETH), and was buried at Mudgee General Cemetery.

The baptism of this last child indicates that most of this family remained in Cornwall. The 1841 census shews the family at Lower Gunnon, Altarnun:

According to Jill Gordon's commendable research on her WebSite The McKinnon Journey from Skye to Australia on http://www.mckinnonsofskye.tribalpages.com [accessed May 2011], the marriage between Henry Robert Wilcox and Harriett Jane Robinson, registered at Bathurst in 1875, was one half of a double wedding on 15 Sept 1875 at `Melville Park`, Black Springs, the home of William and Jane Robinson, the other marriage being Harriet's brother Edward Robinson and Mary Jane Green. Harriett's husband Henry was apparently born in 1857 the son of William and Eliza Wilcox from Bathurst and died in 1944 [this could place him as the son of WILLIAM WILCOX (baptised in 1831 at Altarnon Cornwall, son of WILLIAM WOOLCOCK a.k.a. WILCOX and his wife CAROLINE CORNELIUS) by his pen-ultimate marriage, registered at Bathurst in 1856, to ELIZA MARY AGNES THORNTON (1828…187x); rf Section 2.1 above — ed.]. Harriett's birth was registered to WILLIAM and JANE at Bathurst in 1957 [for further information rf Robinson page].

Harriett Jane Wilcox née Robinson, daughter of WILLIAM and JANE MARGARET, died in 1945; her death was registered in Sydney in 1946 [rf Bailey data].
