This family originated in
the Barby (Northamptonshire) and Cubbington -
Radford Semele - Marton - Leamington Hastings (Warwickshire) area of

It appears that the earliest

Things become more definite in this the third generation of the Batcheldor lineage.
William Batcheldor was an agricultural labourer at Radford Semele in Warwickshire. He is considered to have been born at Barby in Northamptonshire to RICHARD BATCHELDOR and his wife MARY, and baptised at Barby in 1766. [Note: Radford may have been a district 1.5km north-northwest of Coventry rather than the parish of Radford Semele.]
William married Mary Masters in 1789 at Marton Warwickshire. Children to William and Mary Batchelor were:
Possibly another child of William and Mary Batchelor was Mary Ann Batcheldor, to whom at least two children were baptised at Radford Semele in the early 1830s:
Jean is inclined to think that t(Rugby/Crick,Barby, Northanthe Jonathan Batchelder, 67, ag lab, born and living at Barby, Northants in the 1851 census with his wife Elizabeth, is the father of our Elizabeth who married William Chater. Presumably his first wife Ann died, and he married again to Elizabeth.

Thelma Violet May Batcheldor, daughter of ERNEST OSWALD BATCHELDOR and his wife VIOLET ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE CALLAGHAN, born 1922 at Oberon, married Richard Percival Young ("Dick") on 12 June 1948 at Lithgow NSW. Dick, born at Lithgow in 1917, was one of six children of VINCENT HENRY YOUNG (born 23 August 1895(?), Stanthorpe QLD) and MAY CATHERINE WILLIAMS (Mae) (born 3 November 1890(?) at Emmaville QLD). Mae, who had lived at Tildsley and Lithgow, was remembered as a soft, docile and lovable lady and great giver; she died at Lithgow on 3 November 1969. Vincent, a coal miner at Lithgow, regarded as a fine and highly moral fellow, died at Lithgow in July 1978. Thelma and Dick had two children:
Thelma and Dick lived and farmed at Edith and later also at "Grand View" Oberon, winning Farmer of the Year several times, with two trips to New Zealand as a result. Their primary lambs constantly won prizes at the Oberon and Bathurst Shows. Dick, a kind, honest well-regarded man and hard worker, had enjoyed and excelled at cycling. Thelma, a hard worker and great sportswoman, showed strong determination and kindness. She was Oberon's district champion pea-picker several times. A fortnight before his fiftieth wedding anniversary Dick was in hospital with a lung infection and some cardiac problems. Dick Young died on 21 November 2003. The Western Advocate published this obituary in 2004:
Edith community loses honourable, loving friend
THE death has occurred of well-known Edith lamb producer Richard Percival (Dick) Young.
The late Mr Young passed away peacefully with his loved ones around him in Bathurst hospital on November 21.
He would have been 87 on February 9.
Dick Young, who was born in 1917, was the second son of Vincent Henry and Catherine (May) Young and was born in Lithgow.
His older brother, Ted, owned and worked the Caltex garage in Cullen Bullen for many years.
Mr Young's other brothers were Charlie (deceased), from Wollongong, and Vinnie and Eric, who have both lived their lives in Lithgow.
His sister, Doris, now lives at Daley's Point on the Central Coast.
From an early age the elder two boys worked in the coal mines at Lithgow in the time when pit ponies were used to pull the skips full of coal out of the mines.
It was hard work but Dick, who was never known to complain about conditions, endured the work to help make ends meet for his family.
He was around 14 years of age when he raced bikes at Gosford, around the era of Hubert Opperman.
Mr Young has a trophy from his bike racing days a race from Lithgow to Bathurst.
He was also a keen tennis player and loved dancing.
After the WAR he went with a mate to pick peas around the Oberon district and cheekily told his mother he was "going to marry the world's champion pea picker", who was Thelma Batcheldor.
The couple were married in 1948 and he started rabbit trapping with Thelma's dad, Ernest Batcheldor.
Ern would carry 40 or 50 traps on his shoulders and walk for miles, always remembering where he left his traps. (Mr Young said he had to number his).
They had to use six horses pulling a four-furrowed plough and Mr Young would sit on the back, sowing peas and potatoes by hand.
They were hard times and rest days were few, but much satisfaction was to be gained from those days of toil.
Mr Young also went farming with Bill Hughes, from Ginkin, and both Bill and his wife, Sheila, became life-long friends to Dick and Thelma.
Many people will remember Dick and Thelma for their amazing success with their fat Iambs in many Oberon and Bathurst shows.
They were awarded the 2BS "Bathurst Farmer of the Year" on two separate occasions.
The couple were also successful in growing crops of peas, potatoes and turnips and grazing cattle.
As a team, Thelma and Dick worked many long hours through every season at Edith and forged a great partnership of over 54 years.
They enjoyed their farm work, tennis on a Sunday afternoon at Edith with many friends and Dick went to support Thelma and daughter, May, playing hockey on Saturdays.
The couple also loved watching son, Ernie, play rugby union for Bathurst and the Central West in his prime.
Mr and Mrs Young would often run charity "old time dances" in the Edith Hall which has left an indelible print on the minds of all those fortunate to have attended any of these occasions.
When friends think of Mr Young they will remember his good nature, his great spirit and his happy smile that made all of his family and mates feel glad to be around him.
Family and friends will all sadly miss such an honorable, loving man who enjoyed an admirable life.
Thelma Violet May Young died in Canberra on 4 October 2005; the following obituary was published in The Oberon Review of 17 November 2003:
OBITUARY
Thelma Violet May YOUNG
7th May, 1922 – 4th October, 2005
Thelma was the second child of Ernest Oswald and Violet May Batcheldor and was born in Whitely’s house, Oberon. She has an older brother, Oswald who resides in Sydney and a younger sister, Ida Simmons who lives at Norway Oberon. They were students at Edith Public school which was a good 1.5 km walk from their home on their property “Spring Hill”.
Thelma and Ida were renowned for agility and speed picking peas, which was evident at the competition at Port Macquarie in 1942 where Thelma gained 1st place and Ida 3rd. Thelma was accustomed to hard farm work but also enjoyed dancing, playing netball and tennis and scoring for her father’s cricket team when they played locally.
In June 1948, Thelma married Dick Young and their partnership of over 54 years produced many prizes for their fat lambs and cattle at the local shows. They won the 2BS Farmer of the Year competition on two separate occasions. As well as hard work they were highly active in the local community running dances at Edith for charity, organizing tennis at the local recreation courts and they took pleasure in dancing, playing bingo and euchre in both Oberon and Bathurst. They had a son Ernie, who owned Bass Hill Veterinary Hospital for 25 years and a daughter May, who teaches Mathematics and Special Education in Canberra. As a couple, Thelma and Dick supported their children by ensuring they had good academic opportunities and they also loved to barrack at their sporting events. Thelma in fact took up hockey at the age of 44 when the Oberon team in which May played was short of players. She made history when at 70 was the oldest woman in the state still playing hockey and was thus featured in the Sydney Morning Herald.
After Dick’s passing in November 2003 Thelma carried on stoically with her independent lifestyle. She enjoyed playing bingo and euchre in Bathurst and overseeing the work on her farm. A recent highlight for her was to attend her Aunt Ida’s 100th birthday celebrations in Sydney at which many family members were reunited.
Thelma has seven grandchildren who are all in awe of her strength of character and fierce determination to finish a job well. One grandson Stephen who is at present in Ireland has said he thinks of his Nanny when he plays rugby or does anything challenging. Those helping her dig out noxious weeds, collect wood, pick peas, or indeed any physical task, won her admiration if they could work as hard as she could (no mean feat mind you).Thelma has been described as “a champion” and her legacy of a strong work ethic and “achieve the best that you can” will be remembered by her family and friends alike.
Thelma passed away on October 4th in Canberra. She will be sadly missed by her loved ones but will continue to inspire all those who knew her well.
Ida Pearl Batcheldor,
youngest of three children of ERNEST OSWALD BATCHELDOR and his wife VIOLET
ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE CALLAGHAN, was born 14 April 1925. The Sydney Morning Herald 26 April 1947 (p34) noted: "SIMMONS-BATCHELDOR.-The Engagement is announced of Ida Pearl, youngest daughter or Mr. E. Batcheldor and the late Mrs. Batcheldor, of Edith, to Richard, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Simmons, of Balfour, Oberon."

GEORGE and MARY SIMMONS. Ida and Richard had five children:
Hannah Batchelder, second of eleven children of JOHN BATCHELDOR and his wife JANE WORRALL, was born 15 February 1854 and baptised 26 March 1854, Cubbington. Hannah died aged 1 year on 2 July (?)1854 [perhaps this should be 1855] and was buried at Cubbington on 5 June.
.Joseph Batcheldor, labourer aged 76 years, died at the home of his daughter Ethel Batcheldor at Jenolan Road, Oberon, on 14 November 1931. Ethel deponed that he was son of farmer John Batcheldor and Jane Boyes [sic; Boyes is erroneous], and that though born in England he had lived 73 years in NSW. He had married Kathleen Hall when about 18 years, and Ellen Jane at Glen Alice when about 44 years old. Children by his first marriage included Jane (Living, aged 57 years) and one male and one female deceased; by his second marriage were Leslie (aged 32 years), Herbert (24), Ethel (21) and Amos (17), all living, and no deceased issue.
Ellen Jane Batcheldor, aged 81, daughter of JOHN WILLIAM, died on 3 August 1962; the death was registered at Portland. She was buried with Joseph at Oberon.
The birth of Albert Leslie Batcheldor was registered at Blayney NSW, he was born 5 September 1902, his mother noted as ELLEN J (remembered by Beatrice Cooke as Helen Joan Roadwell or Rodewell). He lived with Christina Lottie Bonham, and they raised (at least) three children [not necessarily in the following order, nor necessarily the issue of Albert]:
According to detailed 2006 research by Timothy Metcraft available on RootsWeb [accessed 09dec2010], Christina, born in 1894 in Balmain South, the daughter of JOHN CHRISTOPHER MARKA and LILY NORTH, had previously been married to Stephen John Bonham (born 1880, Bathurst) at Bathurst in 1911. They had ten issue including:
The NSW Electoral Rolls 1930, 1936, 1937 and 1943 shew Christina Lottie Bonham [home duties] at Oberon. Those Rolls, and the 1949, shew Stephen John Bonham [labourer] at Bathurst (generally at Duramana) where many Bonhams were gathered. The death of Stephen John Bonham, son of WILLIAM and SARAH ANN, on 19 October 1951, was registered at Condobolin in 1952.
Christina Lottie Bonham died on 17 September 1949 [and was buried at Katoomba], as remembered in The Sydney Morning Herald on 17 September 1952 (p26):
The marriage of an Albert Leslie Batcheldor and Ruth May Worthington was registered at Katoomba in 1955. The death of Ruth May Batcheldor, daughter of HENRY and LUCY MARGARET, was registered at Quirindi in 1966. The death of Albert Leslie Batcheldor, son of ELLEN JANE, was registered in NSW in 1976.BONHAM -In loving memory of our dear mother and grandmother, Christine Lottie Bonham who departed this life September 17, 1949.

According to Herbert's birth certificate Joseph Batcheleor and Nellie Rodwell had married in NSW on 15 February 1895 at Evans Swamp, and Joseph was a miner from Macquarie England aged 39 in 1907 and Nellie, born at Wolgan, was aged 27 in 1907.
The birth of Ethel J Batcheldor was registered at Carcoar NSW in 1910 [#13466], her parents noted as JOSEPH BATCHELDOR and ELLEN J. Ethel married Walter Harold Ross (Harry) at Parkes NSW in 1934; they had one son:
Diane de Guara (née
Elsie May Batcheldor, Ethel's neice) thinks that Ellen J was Ethel's daughter
(out of wedlock) and was taken in as Herbert's sister. Diane also mentioned
(19 June 2002) that Ethel had a daughter, BELLE. Beatrice Cooke (pers comm
August 2002) says this is Doreen Thomas, PO Box 27, Lutwyche QLD 4030.
In 1997 Ethel was living in Queensland.
In 1997, Amos Batcheldor,
brother of Albert Leslie and Ethel J, was living at Lithgow. [The birth of an Amos B Batcheldor was registered at Moss Vale NSW in 1914, his parents noted in the index as THOMAS BATCHELDOR and ELLEN J; this may or may not have been the brother of Albert Leslie and Ethel J. Australian Army records note Amos Boys Batcheldor of Oberon, born 1 June 1914 at Wallgrin [sic], enlisted at Baulkham Hills on 27 September 1942, noting his next-of-kin as Ellen Batcheldor; he was discharged a Private at 103 Australian General Hospital on 25 October 1945].

It is likely that he was the John Batcheldor who during 1883 in the Macquarie district near Bathurst married Eva Moore Cunyngham, born in 1865 near Hartley, daughter of THOMAS MOORE CUNYNGHAME and his wife MARY ELIZABETH G MUDGE. To John and Eva were born:

for life.]]
Children of Ambrose and Bridget, all born near Oberon, included:
The 1915 electoral roll shews Ambrose a farmer aged 54 years and Bridget aged 49 years engaged in home duties, both residents of Edith. Ambrose died on 25 July 1933 at Ginkin near Oberon. and Jane Lois Batcheldor [George's older sister] after Jane died in 1925 following
complications after childbirth. Ruby Batcheldor née Tonkin died 11 July 1963 aged 71; George Eli Batcheldor died 29 July 1973 aged 79 years at Canowindra [both were buried at Lithgow General Cemetery, Seventh Day Adventist section (row 2)].
Mary Selina Batcheldor was born 1863 near Oberon, first Australian-born and eldest surviving daughter of Warwickshire-born emigrants JOHN BATCHELDOR and JANE née WORRALL, the seventh of their eleven children. Mary married William Larnach in 1883 in the Macquarie district of NSW. William was the son of WILLIAM LARNACH and JANE MACKIE, born in the Bathurst district in 1860; he may have been a school teacher at Lowther NSW (on the Sydney road from Oberon). Mary bore William nine (?or ten) children:
Possibly there was another child:
In 1984 "Ab" Whalan remembered six of the girls, four as Ella, Maggie, Mar and Polly. William Larnach, aged 60, son of William and Jane, died 29 September 1920, the death registered at Lithgow. Mary Selina Larnach née Batcheldor died aged 75 on 15 January 1939 at "Thora", Lowther in the Shire of Blaxland, the death registered at nearby Lithgow. Her burial in the Presbyterian section of the Lowther cemetery was witnessed by Thomas Cunnynghame and S Batcheldor, and her son-in-law T J Hawken, of "Thora", deponed that she was survived by daughters Annie M (47), Laura M (39) and Ella M (33), and pre-deceased by two male and five female issue; he also stated that Mary Selina had married William at O'Connell NSW when she was 20 years old.
Laura Margaret Larnach was born near Lithgow in 1898, daughter of WILLIAM LARNACH and his wife MARY SELINA BATCHELDOR. Laura married Alfred Ernest Barker; they were the parents of six children:
Walter Boyes Batcheldor was born 16 October 1865 near Oberon, son of Warwickshire-born emigrants JOHN BATCHELDOR and JANE née WORRALL. Walter married Emma Matilda Cunninghame in 1889 [near O'Connell] in the Macquarie district of NSW. Emma, born 1867 near Bathurst, was the daughter of THOMAS MOORE CUNYNGHAME and his wife MARY ELIZABETH G MUDGE. The children of Walter and Emma, all born near Oberon, included:
The NSW Electoral Rolls of 1930, 1936 and 1937 shew Walter Boys Bartcheldor [farmer] and Emma [home duties] at Edith; in 1943 Walter [retired] is at Glenleigh, Edith; Emma is listed at Edith in 1943, 1949 and 1954.
The Sydney Morning Herald of Monday 26 August 1935 (p10) reported an incident, probably regarding Walter and Emma:
WOMAN BITTEN BY CATTLE DOG.
OBERON. Sunday.
Mr. W. Batcheldor of Edith was savagely attacked and bitten by a neighbour's cattle dog.
Finding the dog at her house she endeavoured to hunt it home by scolding it. The dog attacked her, biting her on an ankle and then on the calf of a leg.
Mrs. Batcheldor failed to make the dog release its hold, and she was thrown to the ground. Trying to force the dogs jaws apart, she called for help. Her cries were heard by her husband, who found it necessary to seize the dog by the throat to make it release its hold. He feared any other means would have resulted in the tearing away of a large portion of the calf of the leg.
Dr. Perkins was called from Oberon, and he inserted eight stitches in the wound. The dog was shot.
Walter Boyes Batcheldor, farmer, died 18 June 1946 at Edith. His wife, Emma Matilda Batcheldor née Cunynghame, died in 18 June 1952, aged 84 years. [For further details of the Cunynghame family refer to the Bailey file.]
Pearl Ruberta Batcheldor, first-born of WALTER BOYES BATCHELDOR and his wife EMMA MATILDA CUNNINGHAME, was registered at Oberon in 1890. Pearl's marriage to John Eaton, son of Oberon farmer WILLIAM COLEMAN EATON and his wife ELIZABETH MORROW, was registered at Oberon in 1915. Pearl and John raised at least three children:
The 1930, 1936, 1937, 1943 and 1949 Electoral Rolls shew John Eaton [farmer] and Pearl Ruberta Batcheldor [home duties] at "Goldfield", Kelso; the 1936 and 1937 Rolls list them at Glanmire. The 1949 and 1954 Rolls note Sidney [farmer] at Limekilns Rd., Kelso; the 1960 Roll has John [contractor] anf Pearl at 273 Bentinck street, Bathurst.
Minnie May Batcheldor was born in 1891, the second issue of WALTER BOYES BATCHELDOR and his wife EMMA MATILDA CUNNINGHAME. In 1918 at Oberon, Minnie married Sidney James Cunynghame, 1889-born son of Oberon farmer CHARLES WHALAN CUNYNGHAME and his wife ROSA MARY BATCHELDOR; Minnie and Sidney raised five children:
CUNYNGHAME Minnie May. — June 16, 1948, at St. Vincent's Hospital Bathurst, beloved wife of Sidney James Cunynghame and loved mother of Heather, Edith, Edna and James. Interment Methodist cemetery, Bathurst..

Sidney was a foreman with the Main Roads Department, living at once at Dunedoo and later at Edith. Sidney had five children by Eva:
Sidney John Callaghan died 22 May 1939 at Edith. Eva Callaghan née Batcheldor, school teacher and housewife, died 23 March 1979 at Oberon.
Eli Jesse Batcheldor, ninth of eleven children of JOHN BATCHELDOR and his wife JANE WORRALL, was born 18 May 1868 near Oberon. Eli was lost near his house near Oberon on 22 January 1871, when as an infant he wandered off find his brother Johnny who was fencing. His body was never found, though a hat he had been wearing was located near a swamp near where Johnny had been working.
Arthur Thomas Richardson Batchelor, tenth of eleven children of JOHN BATCHELDOR and his wife JANE WORRALL, was born 24 February 1871 near Oberon). The death of Alfred T R Bachelder was registered at Hartley in 1880.
(John) Amos
Wright Batcheldor, born 5 May 1873 at Charley's Hill south-west of Oberon,
youngest of the eleven children of Warwickshire-born emigrants JOHN BATCHELDOR,
farmer, and JANE née WORRALL, was baptised Amos Wright Batcheldor and used that
name at the occasions of his first marriage and the births of his three children
to that marriage. His birth was registered by his illiterate father using only
one Christian name, John, which he used as his first Christian and preferred
name for his second marriage and the birth of at least the first child of that
marriage.
Amos, a bachelor farmer of Gingkin (near Oberon), married Duckmaloi spinster
Agnes Ellen Lewis at Bowenfells near Lithgow NSW on 9 June 1896, when he was 23 years old, witnessed by William Larnach and Ambrose Batcheldor.
Agnes was the daughter of JOHN and MARY LEWIS (Mary gave her consent to Agnes'
marriage), and her birth was registered at Lithgow in 1880. Three children were
born to this union:
Amos then moved to Cowra where the death of his wife Agnes Ellen Batcheldor née Lewis was registered in 1911.
On 2 October 1912, the year
following Agnes' death, 39 year old fettler John married 34 year old widowed
waitress Mabel Alma Hembrow (née Box) at
St John's Church of England, Cowra. The celebrant was the Revd. John Parr,
and the witnesses were Francis Victor Amos and Alma Victoria Hutchison. Mabel,
born at Brighton VIC on 22 December 1878, was the daughter of Sussex-born Melbourne gardener
FRANCIS BOX and ELIZA JANE THOMPSON. A detailed history of the Box family on the InterNet notes that Mable Alma Box (known as May) was born 22 December 1878 and married Earnest Hembrow in 1899; they had one daughter, Doreen May Hembrow, born 1900, who married Christopher James Wilson (two issue, Heather Wilson and Glynn Wilson (Glynn married Barbara with issue Stephen Wilson (married Jane), Timothy Wilson and Bruce Wilson (married Terry) Christopher James Wilson died in March 1975. Earnest Hembrow died in the early 1900s.
Mabel and John had two children:
John, of Lachlan Street,
Cowra, was a 46 years old hotel-keeper when Rex was born in 1919 at Nurse Hood's
Private Hospital in Taragala Street, Cowra; Mabel was 42 years old at the time.
John, who later worked as a lorry driver (??for Wright Heaton & Co.??),
died of sclerosis aged 85 years on 8 August 1958 at the Cowra District Hospital.
His residence was at the time was given as "Waugoola", 30 Lynch Street,
Cowra. The informant registering his death was his son H F M Batcheldor [Hilton]
of 9 Sheahan Street, Cowra. Hylton noted John's issue as (1st marriage) Maurice
J, 61, Hilda, deceased, and Alfred, 57, and (2nt marriage) Hylton F M (42) and
Rex A (deceased). However, the death of an Alfred Eli Batcheldor, aged 46 years,

Mabel Batcheldor, previously Hembrow, née Box, died at Cowra on 28 February
1969.
Maurice John Batcheldor, born 16 April 1897 at Gingkin near Oberon (one correspondent had Casino NSW; the birth registered at Katoomba), was the first of five children fathered by JOHN AMOS WRIGHT BATCHELDOR, farmer of Gingkin. Maurice's mother was Amos' first wife, AGNES ELLEN LEWIS of Duckmaloi. Maurice married Grace Elizabeth Langham at the Glebe, Sydney NSW, on 11 October 1926. Grace had been born at Drummoyne in Sydney on 22 January 1899, the daughter of WILLIAM and ALICE M LANGHAM. Grace and Maurice had at least two children:

Sarah Batcheldor,
Cubbington spinster aged 23 and daughter of labourer JOSEPH BATCHELDER, married
Joseph Harwood at Cubbington on 8 May 1854. Joseph, aged
20, was a bachelor labourer of Cubbington and son of labourer GEORGE HARWOOD (born 1806 at Hampton Lucy WAR) and SARAH SUMMERS (born 1811 at Lillington WAR)
who had married at Lillington WAR 18 August 1833. [The children of George and
Sarah, each born at Cubbington, were Joseph Harwood (baptised 16 February 1834),
Mary Ann Harwood (14 February 1836), Emma Harwood (3 June 1838, buried 28 June
1838), William Harwood (20 September 1840), Thomas Harwood (24 September 1843)
and Eliza Harwood (born 1849)].
Bob Wallis (pers comm. 15jan2004) considers Sarah the single mother of
bastards:
This may be so, or they may have been the children of contemporary Sarah Batcheldor
born 1835, daughter of William and Ann (rf. Secton 9.1on page 66).
Children baptised to Joseph and Sarah were:
The 1881 census shews road labourer Joseph (47) and Sarah (50) living at Cubbington,
next door to Ann and Henry Harris.
Elizabeth Batcheldor (born 1833) died aged 9 years, and was buried at Cubbington on 22 September 1842.
Harriet Batcheldor,
daughter of labourer JOSEPH BATCHELDER and his wife ELIZABETH BOYES, was baptised
at Cubbington 24 March 1835. Harriet married Worthy Sly at Leamington
Priors on 29 November 1852. Worthy was described in the 1881 census as a bricklayer
born circa 1832 Brinkworth in Wiltshire; the IGI indicates his father was DAVID
SLY. Bob Wallis [pers comm. 15jan2004] notes that the Sly family seems to have
first surfaced at Cubbington about 1852; they were traditionally sawyers and
appear to have come from Lamerton, Devon.
Children of Worthy and Harriet were:
The 1881 census shews Worthey
(49) and Harriet (48) at High Street, Wootton Wawen, Warwick, with Leis (14),
William (9), Eliza (5) and John (1). Leis and William were noted as unmarried
and with Eliza were listed as students.
In 1891 Worthy (bricklayer, 59) was dwelling at Wootton Wawen in Warwickshire with Harriet (57) and children Annie (cook and domestic servant, 20) and John (scholar, 11).
By 1901 Worthy was deceased (his death aged 66 was registered in the December quarter of 1896) and widowed Harriet (midwife, 67) was dwelling at Wootton Wawen with and unmarried children Lois (housekeeper, 35) and Albert John (bricklayer, 20) plus boarders and lodgers..
There were possibly other children
born after 1860; note that Elizabeth was christened a month after Eliza and George were married.

In 1997 Robert could boast more descendants than his siblings: six children, 23 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He considered that both his father and paternal grandfather, perhaps with another person, emigrated to Boston in 1890.
Much of the detail in this section is based on the comprehensive research of Sue Simpson [pers comm. 19 September 2002 <sue.simpsonuh@btopenworld.com>]
It
is probable that James Batchler, baptised 27 July 1806 at Radford Semele to WILLIAM and MARY BATCHELER, was a sibling of Joseph.
The IGI on-line notes two children who may have been parented by James [the on-line IGI notes the mother of these children as Mary Ann: this author had previously noted these two children and being christened to Mary Ann alone]:

WIlliam Batchelor, baptised 28 March 1830 at Radford Semele WAR, eldest son of JAMES and MARY ANN BATCHELORi, appears to be the William, aged 23 years, of Newbold Farm, who married Jane Cotterill, daughter of JOHN COTTERILL, on 13 October 1853 at Leamington Priors, Warwickshire [though the IGI index has that William the son of JOHN; it was one of eight Batcheldor marriages in the IGI listings for Leamington Priors between 1859 and 1853].
Jane was baptised 1 April 1833 in Snitterfield WAR, the daughter of gamekeeper JOHN COTTERILL (born Snitterfield) and ANN GREEN (born Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire). The 1851 census also shows a Jane Cotterill aged 17 born in Coleshill, Warwickshire [Snitterfield is a small village near Stratford-upon-Avon and nowhere near Coleshill].
Seven children appear to have been christened at Radford Semele for William and Jane:
In the 1841 census, William is aged 11 and with his parents, James and Mary, and younger brother, Edward (aged 8) in Radford Semele, Warwickshire.

Edward Ba(t)chelor, probably the son baptised 16 September 1832 at Radford Semele to JAMES and MARY ANN BATCHCELOR, married Eliza Hitchman at Wellesbourne WAR on 8 April 1856. Eliza Hitchman was baptised on 12 July 1835 at Wellesbourne WAR to JOSEPH and SARAH HITCHMAN. Wellesbourne is about 5km east of Stratford-upon-Avon. [Other Batchelor marriages at Wellesbourne include John Batchelor to Ann Smith (7 February 1853), Mary Bachelor to John Clements (20 October 1863) and Susan Jane Bachelor to Alfred Horsley (2 June 1868).]
The 1841 census shews Eliza Hitchman, 5 years old at Wellesbourne Hastings WAR, with siblings Charley (15), Mary (10), Lucy (8) and Sarah (3) living with housekeeper Ann Byron; the preceding census entry was for William Hitchman (50), Jane Hitchman (50) and John (25), William (20), Elizabeth (20), Job (13) and Sarah (10).
The 1851 census shews Edward Batchelor, 18 years old, from Radford, a servant (farm labourer) at Elizabeth Land’s Mill at Maxstoke WAR, and Eliza Hitchman, 16 from Wellesbourne, a House Servant in Charles Griffen’s Farm House at Chesterton WAR.
Edward and Eliza had five known children, all born at Wellesbourne:

The 1851 and 1861 censii indicate that John Batchelor was born near Bishop’s Tachbrook, perhaps at Oakley Wood Farm, about 1823. Bishop’s Tachbrook lies about 5 km southeast of Warwick and about 4¼ km southwest of Radford Semele. Perhaps John was the John Batchelor baptised at Bishop’s Tachbrook on 20 February 1822 to THOMAS and SARAH BACHELOR.
On 10 August 1814 at Wellesbourne (about 7¼ km southwest of Bishop’s Tachbrook) John Batchelor married Susan Davis (baptised 5 August 1827 at Wellesbourn to JOSEPH DAVIS and his wife FRANCES WILLIAMS; sister of John); they were the prolific parents at Wellesbourne of thirteen children:

Also resident in Cubbington during this period were labourer William Batchelor and his wife Ann, with children:
It is not clear whether
there was any close relationship between this family and the previously described
families. Ann apparently died aged 36 years at Cubbington on 5 July 1851 (pers
comm. Bob Wallis, 15jan2004). Known details for the children of William
and Ann follow.
Sarah was possibly the mother of bastard sons George Batcheldor and Henry Batcheldor
(both baptised 29 April 1850; George died aged 1 week and was buried on 4 May,
and Henry died aged 2 weeks and was buried on 14 May). Bob Wallis (pers comm.
15jan2004) notes that Banns were published on 2nd, 9th and 16th November 1853
for the marriage of Ephraim Standley and a Sarah Batcheldor. According to the
IGI, Ephraim (baptised at Solihull WAR on 12 July 1835 to GEORGE and ANNE STANDLEY)
married Sarah Batcheldor (baptised 5 July 1835 to WILLIAM BATCHELTOR] were married
at Cubbington on 31 January 1853; Ephraim and Sarah were the parents of Ann
Standley (baptised 24 April 1853), William Standley (baptised 26 November 1854)
and George Standley (baptised 30 November 1856). [Note: some events may be confused
with contemporary Sarah Batcheldor born 1831 and married in 1854, daughter of
Joseph (rf. Secton 4.1.3.5 on page 61). Bob Wallis thinks George and Henry may
have been sons of Sarah daughter of Joseph.]
William (born 1838) was possibly the father of William Batcheldor (baptised
21 September 1863) and Ann Batcheldor (baptised 28 July 1867), children of
labourer William and Jane.
Emma, aged 23, was the mother of William Alfred Batcheldor (bastard son baptised
25 April 1869). Aged 24, Emma married William Alfred Smallwood (his mark) of
Cubbington on 20 March 1871. At the time Emma, from Cubbington, was noted as
the spinster daughter of labourer William Batcheldor; William Smallwood was
a bachelor labourer aged 27 from Cubbington, and name-sake son of tailor William
Alfred Smallwood. Their marriage, officiated by Francis Edge, was witnessed
by John Smith (his mark) and Emma Smith (her mark).
A search
of unassisted immigrants arriving in Sydney during this period reveals the
arrival of Mr A Batchelder, Mrs Batchelder, Master Batchelder and Miss Batchelder
aboard the 990 ton George ?Raynes from Pigot Sound on 17 July
1858 (Mr A Batchelder was the master of this vessel).
P-2. Batchelders aboard the SS Wonja Wonja, Sydney 26 August 1884 and Iberia, 1884
Three passengers listed as Mr Batchelders, two as Mrs Batchelder, one of the latter with two children, arrived in Sydney on 26 August 1884 aboard the 393 ton Steam Ship Wonja Wonja [?or Wonga Wonga?] from Melbourne. It is possible these included Frederick (30) and Sarah (28) who had arrived in Melbourne by the Iberia in May 1884 and Master W Batcheldor (11) who had arrived in Melbourne by the Iberia in September 1884 [note that "master" here implies that "W" was a juvenile male]:

The marriage of John Callaghan and Annie Elizabeth May Pearce (May) was registered at Orange NSW in 1896. John was a school-teacher, and moved from Duneedo NSW to the Edith school, apparently to re-establish some control over some fairly unruly lads in the school. John and May raised six children including:

Francis and his wife Sarah Burch arrived in Australia on 27 May 1855 in the Constitution, together with their daughter Martha Batchelor (born 9 February 1854 at Amesbury,Wiltshire). A son James Batchelor was born and died en voyage; Sarah Batchelor née Burch died in quarantine shortly after arrival in Sydney. Francis then married Catherine Henley (born 21 September 1831 at Bermondsey in Surrey, England; emigrated to Australia per the Malacca in 1851). Children of Francis and Catherine included:
