C-1 William Crockford (…1712) m. Mary Rawle (1672…1741+) [Wootton Courtenay and Cutcombe, Somerset]

William Crockford of Wootton Courtenay married Mary Rawle, daughter of GREGORY RAWLE of Wootton Courtenay, at Cutcombe on 23 April 1695. Mary had been baptised at Wootton Courtenay on 16 May 1672. William, a yeoman, was deceased by 1715, survived by his wife and their children:
William Crockford, husband of Mary Rawle, was deceased when Mary's father Gregory prepared his will in February 1715: a William Crockford was buried at Wootton Courtenay on 5 October 1712. When Gregory, who died in 1725, willed that if his son Andrew died without heirs then his lands Pearow and Fernhill at Wootton Courtenay) should be entailed to Mary for her lifetime (or to her heirs if she remarried), and his two tenements at Cutcombe — called Quarum Ketner and Arkland. Andrew's will, written in 1741, indicates that Mary had not remarried by the time Andrew died in 1746, apparently a widower leaving a young son (Gregory).

A Mary Crockford, perhaps the daughter of Gregory and relict of William, was buried at Wootton Courtenay on 13 January 1746J [1747G]. A William Crockford, son of Hugh and Mary Crockford, was baptised at Wootton Courtney on 16 March 1748J. On 15 April 1749 were buried a Mary Crockford and a William Crockford (perhaps the child and mother aforementioned). A Hugh Crockford was buried on 21 January 1781.

It is possible though by no means certain that Hugh Crockford in the next section was a descendant of William and Mary.

The Rawle family seems to have first appeared at Wootton Courtenay SOM in the latter half of the seventeenth century, when Gregory Rawle, eldest son of PETER RAWLE of Selworthy, settled at Wootton Courtenay, probably at the time of his marriage, and in the lifetime of his father. The name of his wife has not been ascertained, but the parish registers record the baptism of two of his children, namely:-
Gregory Rawlle was buried at Wootton Courtenay on 4 September 1725. By his will, dated 14 February 1715, he bequeathed to his son Andrew, and his heirs forever, all his lands at Pearow and Fernhill. Bequests were also made to his daughter, Mary Crockford, and her children. Rawle (1898, p291) cites with the wills of Gregory and Andrew Rawle (written 1715 and 1741 respectively):

C-2 John Crockford (…1739?) m.(c1699) Grace — (…1715); ??m2. Elizabeth —

John Crockford and his wife Grace — had the following children baptised at Cutcombe in the early 1700s:

Some tragedy befell the family in November 1715 at Cutcombe:

Grace, Wife of John Crockford, Buried ye ?18th ??Nov [1715, Stoate has 10 November]
Jane, Daughter of Jno & grace Crockford, Buried ye 18th Day of November [1715]
Grace, Daughter of John & Grace Crockford, Buried Nov, 20th Day [1715]

Perhaps John Crockford later married Elizabeth —, with a daughter baptised at Cutcombe in 1732:

A John Crockford was buried on 22 July 1739 at Cutcombe.

C-3 Richard Crockford (…1746?) m.(c1705) Margaret Thomas (…1737?)

Richard Crockford married Margaret Thomas of Cutcombe at Luxborough on 21 July 1709; they had two known children baptised at Cutcombe in the early 1700s:

A Margaret Crockford was buried on ?3 December 1737 at Cutcombe. A Richard Crockford was buried on 25 May 1746 and another Richard Crockford on 10 January 1747J [1747G], at Cutcombe.

C-4 Thomas Crockford (…) m.(1709) Elizabeth Scott (…)

Thomas Crockford married Elizabeth Scott at Cutcombe on 15 June 1709; they were the parents of:

C-4.1 Thomas Crockford (1712…) m. Mary Moggridge (…)

Thomas Crockford, possibly born 1712 to THOMAS CROCKFORD and his wife ELIZABETH SCOTT, married Mary Moggridge at Cutcombe on 24 April 1731; they were the parents of:

C-5. Thomas Crockford (…) m.(c1712) Jane — (…)

[This Thomas may have previously been the husband of Elizabeth Scott (rf. Lineage C-4 above)]
At least three children of Thomas Crockford and his wife Jane — were baptised at Cutcombe in the early 1700s:

[A Thomas Crockford and Jane Hole were married at nearby Luxborough on 9 September 1721 and may have been the parents of John and/or Grace above)].

C-5.1 Grace Crockford (c1724-35…)

Grace Crockford was the mother of:
Bernie Nicholson (pers comm, 10 May 2002) suggests that Grace was baptised on 15 June 1724, the daughter of THOMAS CROCKFORD and his wife JANE. The father of James was not identified.

In an eMail on 19 November 2006, Monica Ghadjar (née Howe) [monica@chapel162.fsnet.co.uk] wrote:
Subject: James Crockford baptised Dec 1755
I have read your genealogy pages with interest since I am a direct descendent of James Crockford, baptised Dec 1755. I can tell you that he took the name of Howe, along with his mother Grace who was buried as Grace Howe but never married. James Howe, as he became, married Joan Pope in Cutcombe in 1777. He died in 1813 and was buried in Cutcombe.

The Cutcombe Parish Registers shew James How and Joan Pope married at Cutcombe on 16 November 1777 after Banns, that Grace How was buried at Cutcombe on 3 July 1785 and that James Howe was buried aged 63 years at Cutcombe on 28 October 1813 [implying he was born about 1750].

Monica's information presents a different picture from what this author had interpreted essentially from parish registers and Bishop's transcripts. Monica elaborated on 22 November 2006:
… My father has been working on his family tree for some years now. He's almost 82, he lives in Bristol which is not too far away from Cutcombe and he has been there on a number of occasions to look up information etc. He has come across this information by going backwards through the Howe line.
The reason for the change of name to Howe is a very interesting one. My father recalls being told by his father and also by a friend of the family years ago that there was a connection between our family and someone very high up in the royal family through an illegitimate child. During my father's investigations he came across two other members of the family also investigating their family trees. Interestingly enough, they had all been told the same story about their ancestry since they were children and this had been handed down by word of mouth from grandparents and great grandparents, yet these three family members had never met before. All three had managed to go back as far as James Howe but could go no further. All three had come to the same conclusion: that this was the illegitimate child they had heard about (and the first record of any illegitimate child in the line) and that he was possibly the son of Admiral Richard Howe, whose mother was the illegitimate daughter of George I. There are no bastardy papers etc or any other evidence to show that Grace Crockford claimed any payments. The two were of similar ages and Howe had numerous connections in the area. The Crockfords were reasonably wealthy farm owners. The landowners around Cutcombe were well-known - some were MPs. Also, having read Howe's biography it would seem that while he was away almost continuously until June 1749, he remained ashore for 21 months from that time until March 1751, which makes the story more credible. Unfortunately, he was a very secretive person and made a point of regularly destroying correspondence, to the point that he would write to someone and ask them to destroy a letter he had previously written to them! So there is very little information available about his early life. Perhaps Grace Crockford received nothing in the way of support from Howe, so she took his name.
I don't know much about the Pope family. James Howe was a shoemaker. He had a number of children, some moved away from Cutcombe to Bedminster in Bristol which was the nearest city of size. Some of the family ended up in Australia. We did write to someone there about the Admiral Howe story but never received a reply. My father has also been to Cutcombe to see if he could find out any information from some of the Crockfords still remaining there, but nobody seemed interested in family trees.

Monica's interpretation is interesting and to be viewed with an open mind; however this author does not consider it substantiated sufficiently to necessitate agreement. The James Crockford buried aged 82 years at Cutcombe on 5 March 1838 agrees well with identifying him as the base-born James Crockford baptised to Grace Crockford on 28 December 1775.

C-5.1.1 James Crockford (1755…1838) m. Joany Crockford (1759…1834)

Based upon his age at death [82 years in 1838] it appears that James Crockford was the child baptised on December 1755 at Cutcombe, base-born of GRACE CROCKFORD. James married Joany Crockford at Cutcombe in April 1780, witnessed by Hugh Crockford and John Siderfin. James and Joany were both of the parish of Cutcombe Joany seems to have been the daughter of HUGH and JANE CROCKFORD baptised at Cutcombe in October 1759.
[Research by Tony Crockford considered that James was baptised January 1751 at Cutcombe, son of HUGH and JONEY CROCKFORD.]

The children of James and Joany Crockford, all born and (if married) married at Cutcombe SOM, were:

Joany Crockford was buried at Crockford on 15 July 1834, aged 74 years; her husband James Crockford, yeoman of Little Hawkwell, Cutcombe, died aged 82 years on the fifth day of March 1838 at Cutcombe and was buried at Cutcombe on 10 March. His will read :

C-5.1.1.1 Grace Crockford (1781…1846) m. Thomas Baker (c1782…1841+)

This Grace Crockford and Thomas Baker married in February 1801 at Cutcombe; it is assumed that she was the first-born child of JAMES and JOANY CROCKFORD, baptised Gracy at Cutcombe in March 1781. Grace's younger sister Jane also married a Thomas Baker (presumably the two Thomas Bakers were cousins). There was a Thomas Baker, son of William and Mary, baptised at Cutcombe on 16 February 1781, and another, son of George and Jane, baptised on 16 August 1784 - it would appear that the former married Grace.

In 1814 Thomas was described as a labourer of Cutcombe. Children of Thomas and Grace Baker included:

Thomas and Grace Baker née Crockford
appear in the 1841 census at Coombeshead in Cutcombe:

Thomas Baker Head Married 59 Ag. Lab. Y 1781

Richard Baker (2001) traces his Bakers to north-west Somerset, including a Thomas Baker who on a later census return stated he was born in Exton about 1808; Richard has been unable to locate Thomas' birth records: perhaps he is the above Thomas baptised in 1807. Richard did note a Richard Baker, widower aged 97, buried 8 February 1807, and commented that “There seemed to be a lot of movement between Exton and Cutcombe”.

C-5.1.1.2 James Crockford (1784…1848) m. Mary Redler (1776…1864)

James Crockford, bachelor (son of JAMES CROCKFORD and his wife JOANY née CROCKFORD), and Mary Redler (or Ridler), spinster, both of the parish of Cutcombe, married at Cutcombe in March 1812; witnesses were a Michael Ridler and churchwarden James Widlake. In 1813 James Crockford was a churchwarden of the parish. Mary, daughter of MICHAEL and JANE RIDLER, was baptised at Cutcombe on 27 April 1786. The children of James and Mary were:

Baptismal entries for his children (1813…1827) note James as a farmer of Cutcombe. The 1841 census lists the following family :

James Crockford, aged 64 years, was buried at Cutcombe on 28 October 1848 by officiating minister J Jeldyll.
The 1851 census shews the widowed Mary at Little Hawkwell, Cutcombe, adjacent to her son John:

Mary Crockford was buried at Cutcombe by W P Anderson on 7 May 1864, aged 78 years.

Note that there was another Mary Crockford, Cutcombe-born widow and retired farmer's wife aged 72 years, listed in the 1861 census - she was probably Mary Adams who married Thomas Crockford at Cutcombe on 15 June 1813. Mary Adams, daughter of William and Ann Adams, had been baptised at Cutcombe on 24 October 1789. Thomas was buried on 3 April 1849 aged 72 years; he was likely to have been baptised at Cutcombe on 20 October 1776, the base-born son of Jane Crockford (who later married William Chapman - rf Lineage C-9.1). This Mary was buried at Cutcombe on 3 February 1877, aged 87 years.

Michael Crockford was baptised March 1827 at Cutcombe. Annie Topham (1988) has a photograph of a gravestone in Swansea GLA WLS inscribed:
Ann Crockford, Beloved wife of Michael, d. Dec. 18, 1869, age 47 yrs. Swansea.

This Ann would have been born c1821/22. It appears that Michael and Ann may have moved to Swansea in Glamorganshire, Wales; the 1861 census for Swansea in shews the following entry [note: a niece but no offspring; also Ann apparently not from Cutcombe]:

Questions thus arising are:
Was there an Ann Baker daughter of Thomas Baker and Jane Crockford?
Was Ann, wife of Michael Crockford, born Ann Baker?

C-5.1.1.2.1 James Crockford (1814…1849) m. Matilda Pugsley (1819…)

James Crockford, baptised March 1814, Cutcombe, apparently as full-age bachelor labourer of Cutcombe, son of JAMES CROCKFORD, farmer and labourer, married full-age spinster Matilda Pugsley of Cutcombe in May 1843 at Cutcombe, witnessed by William Ridler and Maria Pugsley. Matilda, baptised at Cutcombe in March 1819, was the daughter of mason SAMUEL PUGSLEY and his wife SARAH GIBBS who had married at Cutcombe in May 1814.

Matilda's siblings were Silas Pugsley (baptised at Cutcombe, March 1815), John Pugsley (baptised April 1817), Maria Pugsley (March 1821), Maria Pugsley (October 1822), Jane Pugsley (September 1825), Silas Pugsley (August 1828) and Ann Pugsley (October 1831). The 1861 census shews Exford-born widowed Sarah living at daughter Ann's home at Luckwell Bridge, together with son John and Ann's daughter:

Matilda Crockford née Pugsley, widow aged 40 years from Cutcombe, re-married at Cutcombe in August 1859 to widower Thomas Quick, 40 year old labourer Cutcombe, the son of labourer JOHN BURNELL [sic]; witnesses were George Ford and Ann Pugsley. They had at least one child:

At Cutcombe in July 1846, Thomas Quick, full-age bachelor labourer of Cutcombe (baptised June 1818 at Cutcombe, the base-born son of BETTY QUICK, a single worman of no employment residing in the Cutcombe Poor House) had married Anne Heard, under-age spinster dressmaker of Cutcombe, the daughter of labourer John Heard; witnesses were William Heard and Eliza Merchant. Thomas, by his marriage to Anne, was the father of :

C-5.1.1.2.2 George Crockford (1816…18xx) m. Harriet Vickery (c1821…)

George Crockford, baptised June 1816 at Cutcombe, son of farmer and labourer JAMES CROCKFORD and his wife MARY RIDLER, was listed in the 1841 census with his parents and three of his brothers at Luckwell Bridge, Cutcombe. George married Harriet Vickery of Kings Brompton [now known as Brompton Regis] on 8 Sepember 1866 at The Church of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Kings Brompton. Harriett, baptised in August 1821 at the same church, was the daughter of JAMES VICARY of Kings Brompton and JANE ORCHARD who had married at Luxborough by licence on 20 October 1817.

George and Mary's children appear to have included:

Charlotte Vickery (born 1825, Kings Brompton, baptised 7 August 1825, The Blessed Virgin Mary, Kings Brompton, died 1830 at age 5, buried 29 August 1830, The Blessed Virgin Mary, Kingsbrompton).
James Vickery (born circa 1829, Cutcombe, baptised at The Blessed Virgin Mary, Kings Brompton, died before 1891; married Maria Webber circa 1852 in Cutcombe, Somerset).

The 1841 census shews George unmarried with his parents and siblings at Luckwell Bridge, Cutcombe:

… George Crockford son of James Crockford and Mary Ridler married Harriet Vickery on 8 sep 1866 at The Blessed Virgin Mary, Kings Brompton. Harriet was born in Kings Brompton, now Brompton Regis, Somerset. I have George on the 1841 and 1861 census living with his parents. I also have Harriet on 1841 and 1851 living with her parents in Somerset. In 1891 she is living in Accrington in Lancashire living with nieces and nephews as a charwoman. She is a widow by then. I have a lot of Vickery's in my tree, mostly from Kings Brompton. C-5.1.1.2.3 Michael Crockford (1827…18xx) m?. Ann — [Baker?] (1822…1869)

Micheal Crockford, baptised 30 March 1827 at Cutcombe, son of farmer and labourer JAMES CROCKFORD and his wife MARY RIDLER, was living with his parents at Luckwell Bridge, Cutcombe SOM in 1841. Michael married Ann —, who had been born c1821/22, it seems at Farmborough in northeast Somerset. Ann may have been Ann Baker. It is unknown where or when Michael and Ann wed; in 1851 they were living in Swansea in Glamorganshire, Wales.

The 1851 census for Swansea in shews Michael, married, a lodger in Swansea, and his wife Annie elsewhere in Swansea with a visitor

The death of Michael Crockford, aged 67 years, was registered in the March quarter of 1895 in Swansea, Glamorganshire.

Questions thus arising are:
Was there an Ann Baker daughter of Thomas Baker and Jane Crockford?
Was Ann, wife of Michael Crockford, born Ann Baker?

C-5.1.1.3 Jane Crockford (1788…1860) m. Thomas Baker (1781…1857)

Jane Crockford, born 1788 to JAMES and JOANY CROCKFORD, may have been she who, at Cutcombe in May 1812, married Thomas Baker. For details of their union and descendants, refer to the Baker file. Thomas was possibly the son of GEORGE and JANE BAKER of Cutcombe, baptised August 1784.

[Research by Annie Topham (1988) considered that Thomas was the son of WILLIAM and MARY BAKER. Ross Beattie (2001) thinks Thomas, son of William and Mary, married Jane's elder sister Grace Crockford on 17 February 1801 at Cutcombe; presumably the two Thomas Bakers were cousins.]

C-5.1.1.4 Ann Crockford (1790…1838+) m. Thomas Crockford

Ann Crockford, spinster of Cutcombe, married Thomas Crockford, bachelor of the parish of Winsford, were married at Cutcombe in March 1815, a witness was a James Crockford. Ann, baptised September 1790, was a daughter of JAMES and JOANY CROCKFORD. It appears that the children of Thomas and Ann included:
The baptismal register records that Thomas in 1816 was a maltstor, residing at Luckwell Bridge in the parish of Cutcombe, and in 1820 a labourer of Cutcombe. Perhaps John became a blacksmith, married a girl called Sarah (considerably his elder), and moved to Devonshire, as the 1851 census has the following entry:
(Bridge Tenement, Tiverton) [census place: Dulverton Tiverton, Devonshire; folio 198, page 1]
Name Position Marital Status Age Occupation Birthplace eYoB
John Crockford Head Married 31 Blacksmith Cutcombe SOM 1820
Sarah Crockford Wife Married 48 Dressmaker Dulverton SOM 1803

C-5.1.1.5 Joany Crockford (1794…1858) m1. George Fish (1792…1843); m2. James Pugsley (1791…)

Joany Crockford, baptised at Cutcombe in May 1794, was the fifth known child of JAMES CROCKFORD and his wife JOANY. Joan, a spinster of Cutcombe, and George Fish, bachelor of Cutcombe, were married in the parish church in August 1819; the marriage was witnessed by James Crockford and James Widlake (clerk). George, born 1792 at Stogursey SOM, was the eldest of eleven children of JOSEPH FISH and his wife ELIZABETH PERRETT. It appears George and Joany had nine children. For further details on the Fish lineage follow this link.

George Fish died of typhus on 28 December 1842, aged 50 years, and was buried at Cutcombe.

The widowed Joany remarried on 18 January 1844, her new husband being widower farmer James Pugsley of Cutcombe. The officiant was J M King and witnesses were James and Matilda Crockford; Joan signed the register and James made his mark. James had been baptised at Cutcombe on 8 May 1791. His parents, labourer RICHARD PUGSLEY and JOANY VENN, had married at Cutcombe on 27 March 1779, each making their mark witnessed by Richard Guld and John Siderfin.

The 1841 census has James Pugsley, 50, living at Dunkery Hill Farm with his daughter Joan's family, next to George's father Joseph on Hawkington Farm:

[By 1861 William and Joan Quartley, aged 47 and 46 respectively, were at Little Hawkwell, Cutcombe, with their three younger children – Ann (12), Richard (9) and Henry (5); all gave their birthplace as Cutcombe.]

It would appear that on census day in 1851 Joan was still at Dunkerley Cottage with Rachel, her youngest child by George, while James Pugsley appears to feature as a lodger at Codsend:

Sarah Baker . . 52 . . 1799
James Pugsley Ldgr . 60 general labourer . 1791

The 1861 census has agricultural labourer widower James Puglsey, aged 72, a lodger at Grange in Cutcombe – born circa 1789, he would be of Joany';s vintage; it also shews a widowed pauper Martha Pugsley aged 71 a lodger in Cutcombe Village – born circa 1890, she is likely to have been the mother of James Pugsley baptised 1816 (a Richard Pugsley of Cutcombe, born circa 1784, was buried at Cutcombe on 3 October 1852, aged 68).]

Joany Pugsley, wife of labourer James Pugsley, previously Fish, née Crockford, died of bronchitis on 30 November 1858, aged 64, and was buried at Cutcombe; Mary Edwards of Luxborough was present when Joany died.

[It is possible though unlikely that James Pugsley was the son baptised by George Nibbs at Cutcombe on 16 March 1816 to labourer Richard Pugsley and his wife Martha, of Barn at Cutcombe; if so, Joany's second husband was considerably younger than herself.]

C-5.1.1.6 William Crockford (1796…1853) m. Jane Fish (1801…1871)

William Crockford, born at Cutcombe SOM on Christmas Eve 1796, was the sixth known child of JAMES CROCKFORD and his wife JOANY. William, a bachelor, married spinster Jane Fish at Cutcombe in March 1824 in the presence of George Fish (?her elder brother) and Ann Fish (?her younger sister). Both William and Jane were from the parish. Jane, baptised in 1801 at Kilve SOM, was the sixth of eleven children of JOSEPH FISH and his wife ELIZABETH PERRETT; the 1861 census noted her birthplace as Pulsham in Somersetshire.

William and Jane had ten known children, all born and baptised at Cutcombe SOM:

At the baptism of his first three children, William was recorded as a labourer in (?animal) husbandry; his occupation at the subsequent baptisms was "farmer". When Emma and Elizabeth (born 1831) died in 1836, the parish burial register recorded their abode as West Hawkwell, parish of Cutcombe. After William died in 1853, his unmarried second and third sons Joseph and Gregory took over as farmer and assistant farmer, and in 1861 were there with their mother Jane and sisters Mary, Elizabeth and Ann.

William and Jane Crockford appear in the 1841 census at Great Hawkwell Farm in Cutcombe:

C-5.1.1.6.1 William Crockford (1825…1891) m. Mary Ann Norman (1829…1887)

William Crockford, born 1825 at Cutcombe SOM, was the eldest son of farmer WILLIAM CROCKFORD (born at Cutcombe on Christmas Eve 1796) and JANE FISH (born c1801). William married Mary Ann Norman in February 1854. Mary Ann, born in 1829 at Cutcombe, was the daughter of bailiff JAMES NORMAN and MARIA ?JANE HURLEY. William was described as a bachelor farmer of full age from Little ?Green, Cutcombe, and Mary Ann as a spinster of full age of Cutcombe; witnessing the wedding were James Norman and Saran Ann Norman. James' occupation was given as “Agent”.

William and Mary Ann Crockford had four known children:

William Crockford, son of JOSEPH CROCKFORD and HANNAH MARY FISH, married Ethel Mary Melhuish, their issue being at least
William died at Halse Manor Hospital in May 1964. Halse is a village approximately 13km (8 miles) WNW of Taunton; its ancient church retains many of its original Norman features as well as some interesting sixteenth-century Flemish glass.

C-5.1.1.6.3 Gregory Crockford (1828…1900) m. Sarah Ann Norman (1831…1893)

Gregory Crockford, 31, a farmer of Cutcombe SOM, and Sarah Ann Norman, 29, a spinster of the same parish, were married in the Parish Church at Cutcombe in November 1861. Gregory, born 1828, was the third son of farmer WILLIAM CROCKFORD (born at Cutcombe on Christmas Eve 1796; died 1853) and JANE FISH (1801…1871). Sarah's father was noted as JAMES NORMAN, a bailiff [her mother was MARIA HURLEY]. Witnesses attesting the wedding were James Norman and Maria Jane Norman. (Unsubstantiated oral history refers to a Lord Norman). The Normans were the sponsors of Gregory's sister Ann's prayer-book.

The couple lived for a time at "Coombshead Farm" in the steep to undulating countryside of Wheddon Cross and Cutcombe SOM - proximate villages situated some 11km southwest of coastal Minehead and 5km southeast of Dunkery Beacon, the latter rising some 520m and used as a landmark by shipping in the Bristol Channel.

Gregory and Sarah had four known children, the younger three known to be alive in 1891:
1871 Census Returns for Cutcombe shew Gregory, aged 41, the married head of the household at "Lower Hawkington", a farm of 313 acres. With him dwelt his wife Sarah A., aged 39, children Frederick J., aged 8, Walter W., aged 6, and Ada M., aged 2, unmarried domestic servant Eliza Gregory, aged 17 (born at Exton), and unmarried farm servants John Hole, aged 19, and Thomas Baker, aged 14.

The 1881 Census has Gregory head at "Hawkington", farming 354 acres and employing two men and one boy. With him were his wife, and unmarried children Frederick, farmer's son aged 17, Ada, scholar aged 12, and Edward W., scholar aged 9 years born at Cutcombe. Domestic servant Elizabeth Williams aged 20, and farm servant James Crockford aged 13, both Cutcombe-born, resided in the same house.

Between 1884 and 1885 Walter boarded with the Britton family at 22 Park Street, Salisbury. Salisbury, officially the City of New Sarum, in Wiltshire's southeast, is at the confluence of the Wylye and Avon Rivers. Originating from the site of Old Sarum, an Early Iron Age hill fort, and taken over by the Romans who there developed a Sorbiodunum, it moved to the more sheltered and better watered locale in a valley in 1220. It became an important town under the Saxons and in the 11th century a bishopric under the Normans who built a castle on the mound. From then until the early 17th century when the charter of James I (1612) put an end to the temporal authority of the bishops, the history of Salisbury largely reflected its burghers' efforts to escape the control of the see. The city in 1970 remained much as it was in the middle ages, divided by right-angular streets into square blocks of housing, of small-scale and friendly architecture. Watercourses ran through most of the streets until 1852. The cathedral, built in Early English style between 1220 and 1258 and boasting the tallest church spire in England (123m), lies in the Close at the southern end of High Street, the main shopping precinct. A medieval centre of the Medieval woolen industry, Salisbury is now important as an engineering and food-processing city. Downton lies upstream along the Avon some way south-east of Salisbury.

In September 1887 Walter married Mary Emma Dibsdall, at Downton near Salisbury in Wiltshire. Mary had been born January 1864 at the home of her mother at 100 John Street, St Pancras, in the Tottenham sub-district of the County of Middlesex (now part of Greater London). Her parents were ALFRED DIBSDALL, a wheelwright, and his wife AMELIA CARTER. Of Amelia, it is known that she was the daughter born in Bristol (southwest Gloucester near the county border with Somerset) circa 1829 to artisan JOHN CARTER and his wife MARY GREEN. Amelia had married Alfred at Salisbury in Wiltshire, their union producing at least three children, Mary Emma and her older brothers Alfred Carter, born October 1855 and James Carter, born 2Q1862. Amelia and James were alive in 1909, the year of Amelia's death. Amelia married a second time circa 1889 at Downton in Wiltshire, acquiring the surname Andrews. There was no issue to this second marriage. It is presently unknown what became either husband.

The 1881 census shews an Amelia Dibsdall (unmarried!) and a Mary Dibsdall in Wiltshire as follows:

Mr and Mrs W Crockford, emigrated to Australia aboard the S.S. Iberia arriving in Circular Quay, Sydney on the 1 November 1887. Their four children were born in Sydney:

In February 1891 the family was residing at Woollahra, near Waverley; in 1893 and 1894 at Petersham in Sydney's inner western suburbs. About 1893, the family was joined in Sydney by Mary Emma's mother, AMELIA ANDREWS, formerly DIBSDALL née CARTER. Amelia died in November 1909, at her daughter's home in Marrickville and was interred next day with her grand-daughter Ethel. She had lived about 80 years, the last sixteen in New South Wales.

In February 1891 Walter was noted as a Stock and Sharebroker. In June 1892 he joined the Civil Service, serving in the Attorney General's Department of the New South Wales Government; in April 1902 he was made Under Sheriff and Accountant, becoming Sheriff of NSW in 2 March 1920. Walter liked to holiday about each third year, generally tied to the scheduling of Test cricket. He was a good chess player and a cricket enthusiast. Late in 1920, Walter returned briefly to England (possibly via Fiji where he may previously have holidayed in July 1914), visiting his birthplace, his old homes and nearby farms such as Thorne Farm, and enjoying the company of numerous friends and relatives around Cutcombe and Wheddon Cross in the Brendon Hills of western Somerset. Several of these people deserve mention. Predominant amongst people he photographed on his holidays were sisters Nell (?alias his wife) and Ada, Eva Gregory, Ben Escott, a young ?boy named Billy (?Ben's ?son) and two girls Florrie and Mary (Mary at least was possibly Billy's sister). There was cousin Charles Hagley of Coombe Farm, Withycombe, cousin Sally Vicary and Jas, Dick and Tom Vicary. He also visited the current tenant on Hawkington Farm, Mr. R. Williams. After sojourning from early August until mid October, Walter returned to Australia aboard the S.S. Marathon.

Mary Emma Crockford née Dibsdall died in October 1924 at the family's home in leafy Greenwich, on Sydney's lower north shore. She was 60 years old, and had spent her last 34 years in Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald of Wednesday 22 October 1924 (p12) noted:
CROCKFORD.- Mary Emma, dearly-loved mother of Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Cameron, of Manly; Dr. and Mrs. H. C. Barry, of Catherine Hill Bay; Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Crockford, of Hunter's Hill.
CROCKFORD.- October 20, 1924, at her residence, Dunkery, Holdsworth-avenue, Greenwich, Mary Emma, dearly-loved wife of Walter W. Crockford, Sheriff of N.S.W., aged 60 years.

Walter William Crockford died at the home of his surviving daughter Hilda, in Balmain, August 1950. The Sydney Morning Herald of 11 August 1950 (p18) noted:
CROCKFORD Walter William, - August 9, 1950, at his daughter's residence, 449 Darling St., Balmain, (ex-Sheriff of N.S.W.), beloved father of Hilda (Mrs. H. C. Barry), Edward (Com- monwealth Bank, Parkes), Norma (Mrs. P.A. Cameron, dec'd.) aged 85 years.

C-5.1.1.6.3.1.1  Olive Norman Crockford (1891…1945) m. Percy Alexander Goldie Cameron (1883…1957)

Olive Norman Crockford (Norma) was born in January 1891 at Wollarah NSW, the second but eldest surviving child of WALTER WILLIAM CROCKFORD and MARY EMMA DIBSDALE. The Sydney Morning Herald of Saturday 2 March 1912 (p7) reported:
Mr. Walter W. Crockford, Under-sheriff of the Supreme Court, and Mrs. Crockford entertained a party of about 50 guests at their residence, Kiora, Hunter's Hill, on Thursday evening, the 22nd ult.; to celebrate the 21st birthday of their eldest daughter, Olive Norma. The grounds and verandah overlooking the Lane Cove River were charmingly decorated with lamps and Chinese lanterns, and all regretted the necessity of leaving early to reach home in the distant rail and tram suburbs.

Norma married Percy Alexander Cameron in June 1919. Percy, born c1883 near Newcastle NSW, was the son of ALEXANDER CAMERON and his wife ANNIE DAVIES or DAVIS (for further details of the Cameron lineage, follow this link). Percy became chief accountant in Sydney City Council. The couple had no children.

Norma was associated with many public issues, particularly those concerned with women and children, including the Moore Park Kindergarten and the inauguration of the Girls Air League. Norma joined the Feminist Club in 1926, presiding from 1934 until her death; she also presided in the "Women for Canberra" movement. In 1929 she was chosen as N.S.W. delegate to the British Commonwealth League Conference in London, and in 1939 she was awarded an M.B.E. in recognition of her public activities. In the early 1930s she was apparently offered a position on the Senate ticket for the United Australia Party (the fore-runner of the present Liberal Party); the offer was declined, possibly reflecting Percy's thoughts on the matter. Keenly interested in the theatre, Mrs. Cameron wrote several one-act plays which were produced by amateur companies in Sydney and, in collaboration with her husband, she wrote a book, "Portals of the Past," which was published in serial form in a country journal.

Norma Cameron née Crockford died in September 1945, survived by her husband. Norma's funeral service at S James' CoE King Street, Sydney, was attended by a large number of mourners; so numerous were wreaths of tribute that two truckloads were taken and laid at the Cenotaph in Martin Place. Percy Cameron apparently remarried about nine months after Norma's death, his second wife separating from him after a few months.

Percival Alexander Cameron, son of Alexander and Annie, died in December 1957 at Balmain.

C-5.1.1.6.3.1.2  Hilda May Crockford (1893…1987) m. Henry Charles Barry (1895…1985)

Hilda May Crockford was born at Petersham NSW in February 1893, the third child of WALTER WILLIAM CROCKFORD and MARY EMMA DIBSDALE. She married Henry Charles Barry (Charlie) in November 1919 at All Saints' CoE, Hunters Hill NSW. Hilda and Charlie were childless.

Charlie was born December 1895 at Neutral Bay NSW to commercial traveller HENRY ROBERT BARRY and his wife ANNIE WILLIS. Charlie's siblings were Rita M Barry (born c1893, NSW), Reginald W Barry (born c1898, NSW; living in Queensland in 1985) and Phylis Barry (born c1899, NSW). Phyllis married a Mr Illiffe, and in 1985/86 was living in Brisbane QLD.

Hilda loved dogs, especially French poodles which she exhibited regularly at shows such as the large annual Royal Easter Show in Sydney, where she won many prizes. Hilda had a close connection with the Church of England at Birchgrove NSW, apparently diminished after some thoughtless words from a bishop, although she continued to support the church monetarily until her death. Hilda and Charlie kept in contact with many of the widely distributed Crockford clan. They made one substantial trip to England (in 1951) and several cruises. Their roomy two-storey terrace house at 449 Darling Street, Balmain NSW, was named "Dunkery" after the West Somerset landmark.

Charlie was a graduate of the University of Sydney, holding Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. He and Hilda had their first home at Catherine Hill Bay NSW, where Charlie was Medical Officer at the colliery town. They later moved to Balmain NSW, where Charlie conducted a highly-respected medical practice as a general practitioner or family doctor.

Henry Charles Barry aged 89 years died October 1985 at Leichardt NSW and was cremated on 11 October at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium. Aged 94 years, Hilda died 7 May 1987 at Willoughby NSW.

C-5.1.1.6.3.1.3  Edward Percy Crockford (1894…1970) m. Jean Bertha Beatrice Kidd (1893…1992)

Edward Percy Crockford (Ted) was born at Petersham NSW in July 1894, fourth child and only son of WALTER WILLIAM CROCKFORD and MARY EMMA DIBSDALL. Much of his childhood was spent at Hunters Hill NSW, where an occasional treat for Edward and his friends was the opening of the old Fig Tree Bridge, linking Linley Point to Hunters Hill across the Lane Cove River. The bridge required opening to allow passage for flour-barges to the mills further up-river, and if the boys saw the approach of a barge from their homes, they would cycle quickly to the bridge and ask the operator if they could open it. This was done by a pedal-powered mechanism, and generally the operator was only too happy to grant the boys requests. Edward later went to the Fort Street Boys High School, gaining employment with the Government Savings Bank after completing his education.

Edward married Bertha Jean Beatrice Kidd (Jean) at Hunters Hill NSW in March 1918. Jean was born at Arncliffe NSW in October 1893, the younger of two daughters born to THOMAS GEORGE DUNBAR OUGHTON KIDD and his wife AGNES ANNIE NEWELL (Annie). Jean's sister Elizabeth Annie Frances Kidd (Bessie) was born April 1892 at ?Newtown NSW.

The couple had four children:

Edward became a manager in the Government Savings Bank at Carlton NSW by the time he was 26 or 27 years old, shortly before its collapse during the Depression. He was able to transfer to secure employment with the Commonwealth Bank, with which he stayed until his retirement as manager at Bondi Beach, Lidcombe, Gladesville, Parkes and Willoughby branches in turn.

The Electoral Rolls shew Agnes Annie Kidd [home duties], Edward Percy Crockford [bank manager] and Jean Bertha Beatrice Crockford [home duties] at 416 Bondi Road, Bondi North in 1930, Agnes at 2 Edwin St., Croydon though Edward and Jean listed at 416 Bondi Road in 1933, all three at 219 Victoria Rd., Gladesville, in 1936 and 1937, the same, with Joan Marian Crockford [student] and Roslyn Elizabeth Crockford [bank officer] in 1943, and Agnes, Edward [manager], Jean and Roslyn [clerk] all [℅] Commonwealth Bank, Parkes in 1949. Alison Judith Reynolds [home duties] and Clive Reynolds [station hand] were at Burrawong, Cumnock in 1949. Edward [bank manager], Jean, Alison and Roslyn [bank clerk] were at 58 Penshurst St., Willoughby [above the Commonwealth Bank] in 1954. George Andrew Beattie [engineer] and Joan Marian Beattie [geologist] were at Lake George Mines, Captains Flat, in 1954.

Edward Percy Crockford died in August 1970; Jean Bertha Beatrice Crockford née Kidd died in July 1992 at Willoughby NSW.

C-5.1.1.6.3.2  Ada Maria Crockford (1869…1947) m. Benjamin Escott (1870…1934)

Ada Maria Crockford, baptised February 1869, was still living with her parents GREGORY CROCKFORD and SARAH ANN NORMAN at Hawkington Farm, Cutcombe, in 1891. Ada married Benjmin Escotti (born 3Q1870, son of WILLIAM BENJAMIN ESCOTT and his wife MARY), apparently in September 1900. Ada and Benjamin were the parents of (at least)

Carolyn Hostetler (1994) thought that Ada was Ben Escott's wife and mother of Billie, and that Billie's wife may have been the Florrie mentioned in the 1951 letter from Amy Crockford to Alice Loomis.

The death of Benjamin Escott was registered in the Williaton district, Somerset, in 3Q1934, aged 64 [viz: born c1870].The death of Ada M Escott on 16 July 1947, aged 78 [viz: born c1869], was registered in the Exmoor district in 1Q1947; Probate was granted on her Will on 17 December 1947.

C-5.1.1.6.3.3 Edward William Crockford (1871…1943) m. Bessie Lovelace (c1873…1910+)

Edward William Crockford, born in July 1871 at Cutcombe SOM, was the youngest of four children of GREGORY CROCKFORD and SARAH ANN NORMAN. Edward married Bessie Lovelace at Dunster SOM on 28 June 1900; Bessie's siblings included Mr T. W. Lovelace and Agnes Lovelace. Edward and Bessie had five known children:
Some of the Crockfords changed from the Anglican faith to the Bible Christian Chapel when it was too difficult for Grannie Crockford (sic) to walk to the Anglican Church.

Edward William Crockford of Higher Brockwell died at Wootton Courtenay SOM in February 1943. As far as is known, none of his children married; three of them settled in Wootton Courtenay.

C-5.1.1.6.3.3.1 Amy Elizabeth Crockford (1901…1962)

Amy Elizabeth Crockford was born in Somerset (probably at Wootton Courtenay) ENG in 1901, daughter of EDWARD WILLIAM CROCKFORD and BESSIE LOVELACE.

In June 1951 Amy wrote (for the first time) to Alice Loomis (nee Hagley, grandmother to Carolyn Hostetler née Wilcox) regarding the recent demise of her Cousin Annie Hagley (daughter of Mary (Polly) Crockford and Thomas Hagley; born September 1870 and died March 1951). Amy wrote that the doctor had said that Annie had "taken queer in the head", but inferred that it was only old age. Annie was buried at Withycombe SOM "with the rest of the family"; the same hymns were used at the funeral service "as for Charlie". In another letter dated 26 September Amy referred to a photograph of Cousin Annie, Charlie, Gertie and Winnie. Gertie, Amy wrote, had married a Dunscombe, and had one son, Max Dunscombe. [Gertie was Lillian Gertrude Dunscombe née Cockle; she seems to have had a strong emotional attachment to Coombe Farm, often taking Matthew (Max) Dunscombe there when he was a child. Max, whose grandmother was Emma (Mary) Fish, spent a great deal of time with “Auntie” Annie. Cousin Charlie was Charles Hagley of Coombe Farm, Withycombe (visited by Walter William Crockford in 1920); he was the brother of the deceased Annie. He was apparently very handsome, a ladies' man, and had had a serious girlfriend.]

Amy also referred to the Misses [Mary and Ella] Fish of Bilbrook [visited by Max Dunscombe when he was very young], who had helped her clear Annie's house following the latter's death. Amy in June 1951 was expecting a visit from her cousin Hilda and Dr Charles Barry on holiday from Sydney; by September she was awaiting their return. Hilda was the daughter of Edward's brother Walter who married and emigrated to Australia in 1887.

Amy never married. Her address on both 1951 letters was Higher Brockwell, Wootton Courtenay, Minehead SOM. She was not personally acquainted with Alice Loomis, but knew of her from Annie Hagley. Alice Loomis did not pass on much oral or written history regarding the family. Amy died in Somerset in 1962.

C-5.1.1.6.3.3.2 Edward Gregory Crockford (1910…1937)

Edward Gregory Crockford (Gregory), was born in Somerset (probably at Wootton Courtenay) ENG in 1910, son of EDWARD WILLIAM CROCKFORD and BESSIE LOVELACE. Gregory, apparently never married, died aged 27 years on 28 October 1937 at Wootton Courtenay. Community respect for is shewn in the following obituary :
WOOTTON COURTENAY MOURNS A RESIDENT
DEATH AND FUNERAL OF MR. GREGORY CROCKFORD
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Crockford, of Higher Brockwell, Wootton Courtenay, and formerly of Hawkington, Wheddon Cross, were assured of the sympathetic thoughts of many residents last Friday when it became known that their youngest son, Mr. Gregory Crockford, had passed away at the early age of 27 years. He was kindly remembered as a cheery personality and a good companion.
At the church of All Saints, Wootton Courtenay, where he had sung as a chorister and whose bells he had helped to peal, the funeral service took place on Monday, in the appropriate gloom of a November day, the interment being in the adjoining churchyard. The Rector, the Rev. A. P. Lance, officiated, and a reminder of the deceased's former connection was afforded by the presence of a portion of the choir. The opening hymn was "Abide with," followed by five verses of "For all the saints," while the 23rd Psalm was also chanted. Mr. W. Copp organist) played Spohr's "Blest are the departed" at the entry of the cortege, and as the coffin was taken from the church he rendered the Mendelssohn piece, "O rest in the Lord."
Mr. Crockford's parents were unable to attend owing to indisposition, and the mourners were Messrs. Walter and Fred Crockford (brothers), Miss Amy Crockford and Miss Evelyn Crockford (sisters), Mr. T. W. Lovelace, Burnham (uncle), Miss Agnes Lovelace (aunt), Mr. W. Escott and Miss M. Escott, Wheddon Cross (cousins), and Mr. E. Bennett, Long Sutton (friend).
In the choir were Messrs. Tom Court and G. Ball, and the Misses Margaret Vaulter, Edith Baker and Kitty Hardy. Others attending included Messrs. John Reed and G. Gooding (churchwardens), A. Carter and W. G. Burnell (representing the British Legion), Mrs. G. Gooding, Mr. G. Channing, Mr. and Mrs. G. Reed, Mrs. Prescott, Mrs. Lang, Mrs. R. Knight, Mrs. Palmer, Miss H. Taplin, Mrs. F. May Brown, and Miss Childs, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Reed and Mr. Robert Knight, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Burge (Totterdown), Mr. J. Carter, Mrs. C. G. Rook, Mrs. Ball (Brookside), Mr. Tom Knight (Wydon), Mrs. A. P. Lance, Mrs. Tom Court (Lowertown), and Mr. R. Carter.
The floral tributes were inscribed as follows:– To our dear Greg., with fond love, from mother, dad, brothers, and sisters – "Till we meet again"; To dear Greg., a good and brave young man, in loving memory, Aunt Ada and cousins Mary and Billie; In loving memory, Uncle Tom and Aunt Miriam; In ever-loving memory of dear Greg., Aunt Agnes and Uncle Amos; In loving memory of dear Greg., from Mary – "Beyond the stream of death love lives, And God his pardon ever gives"; In memory of my pal, Ted, with deepest sympathy, from Edgar, also shared by my family – A little tribute of love for as gallant a fighter as ever fought on the battlefield of life – R.I.P.; With deepest sympathy, Miss and Miss F. C-5.1.1.6.4 Mary (Polly) Crockford (1835…1917) m. Thomas Hagley (c1837…1917-)

Mary (“Polly”) Crockford and Thomas Hagley, born circa 1837 at Withycombe SOM, and produced at least three children:
Thomas Hagley died early of tuberculosis, predeceasing his wife; he was buried at Withycombe, St Nicholas SOM. Mary Hagley née Crockford died March 1917. [For further details follow this link].

C-5.1.1.6.5 Elizabeth Crockford (1844…1916) m. John Hagley (c1844…)

Elizabeth Crockford, born 1844, was the ninth of ten children born to farmer WILLIAM CROCKFORD and his wife JANE FISH. Elizabeth Crockford, spinster, and John Hagley, bachelor farmer, each aged 29 years, were married in August 1873 at the Bible Christian chapel at Hocken's House, St Cleer CON. At the time of her marriage Elizabeth was staying with John Smallridge and his wife Ann Crockford, believed to have been Elizabeth's younger sister, in St Cleer. John Hagley, who lived at Withycombe SOM at the time of his marriage in 1873, was the son of farmer CHARLES HAGLEY (deceased by 1873). John and Elizabeth had four known children.

John and Elizabeth emigrated with their children to Canada in 1889, moving to the United States shortly afterwards. Elizabeth died in 1916; they are both buried at Deerfield OH. [For further details follow this link].

C-5.1.1.6.6 Anne Crockford (1846…1903) m. John Smallridge (1838…1882)

Henry Gayton (1762-1853) and his wife Martha had several children including:
Ann Gayton married George Smallridge (1803…1843-51); their children were:

Apparently, Ann was pregnant with Martha and George nursed Thomas. Both George and Thomas died never seeing Martha .

The 1841 census has the following:
(Tawstock, Devon: Stonyland)
Name Age Occupation
George Smallridge 38 Carpenter
Ann Smallridge 30 .
John Smallridge 3 .
Thomas Smallridge 1 .

George Smallridge died sometime between 1843 and 1851, and the 1851 census shows Ann living as a dressmaker in Barnstaple DEV:

[Note: three geneations of Smallridges lived nearby at Uppacott Village, Barnstaple ]

By 1861, the census shews John Smallridge, 23, of Tawstock, a smith residing in a cottage in the Tawstock area.

Ann Smallridge née Gayton re-married (after 1851 census) becoming Ann Bolt. Her second husband was widower James Bolt; Ann became step-mother to his two children William Bolt (born c1844) and Sarah Bolt (born c1846); Ann emigrated to Chicago when her husband died.

Ann Crockford was born in 1846; her prayer-book was sponsored by the Norman family, which suggests they were her godparents (Ann's elder brother Gregory married Sarah Ann Norman in 1861). John Smallridge was born in February 1838 at Tawstock, north Devon, the son of GEORGE SMALLRIDGE and his wife ANN GAYTON. John and Ann were married in Dunster SOM in August 1871. In 1873 John and his wife Ann were living in the parish of St Cleer CON; with them was staying Elizabeth Crockford (presumably Ann's older sister) who married John Hagley at St Cleer in August.
John and Annie Smallridge had two children:
George and Laura attended school at Bideford and at Shebear in Devon. John and Annie Smallridge and their children George and Laura were in Cardiff GLA c1880, at about the same time as Frank and Ellen Farthing were living there with Frank's sister and widowed mother. Annie Topham in 1988 had a photograph of George (7-9 years old) and Laura (5-6 years old) taken in Cardiff: George appeared to have red wavy hair. The Farthings and their three first-born emigrated to the USA.

John Smallridge was a Bible Christian minister in the Penzance, Scilly, Helston, Tiverton, Padstow, Liskeard, Ringsash, Cardiff, Barrow and (from August 1880) Dalton Circuits; genial and earnest, he died in January 1882 and was buried at Dalton. After John died but before 1889 Ann migrated to the USA with George and Laura, living near the Farthings in Chicago. Ann became a practising Bible Christian after her marriage to John.

Annie Smallridge née Crockford died in Chicago, Cook County IL in December 1903, and was buried in the tiny town of Malta, De Kalb County, northern IL. Annie's gravestone states her birthyear as 1850 (not 1846), and this is supported by all American references including city directories and the census. Thus a question is raised as to whether she is the sister (born 1846) of Elizabeth. However, Annie's spinster daughter Laura kept in contact with the Loomis and Crockford families related to Elizabeth. On 1 February 1911, Laura sent a postcard of Coombe Farm, Withycombe, writing on the back:
The little house in the distance is Lower Dumbledeer, one of our cottages. The Higher one does not show in the view. – Signed: Miss Smallridge.
These cottages were the homes of domestic and field servants; another was called Gupworthy. The same families served for many generations, notably the Gould family; the domestic servants were uniformed.

C-5.1.1.6.6.1 George William Smallridge (1872…1929) m. Ellen Abthorp (1875…1959)

George William Smallridge married Ellen Abthorp (Aunt Nellie); they had one child:
George died in 1929, about one month after Frank George Farthing from Mattawan, was buried near his mother in Malta IL.

Mary Elizabeth Smallridge married William Frederick Hirt (born 1912; died 1983), and they had one child:
Mary Elizabeth Hirt née Smallridge died in 1974. William Frederick Hirt, Jr., had three children living in Toledo OH in 1988.

The Delbridge-Smallridge connection:
Martha Smallridge in England was "sent for" by the widower Thomas Delbridge, whose first wife died leaving him eight children. Thomas, who came from Devon, had known Martha for some time; Thomas Delbridge apparently rarely left Illinios, but did to marry in Indiana [Annie Topham (pers comm., April 2003) says Martha and Thomas married in Malta IL]. Thomas and Martha had one child:
Also in their household was Ann Bolt (born November 1811, died February 1901) who although listed as Thomas' mother in a census and as "MOTHER" in the Malta cemetery was in fact the mother of his second wife, Martha Smallridge. Born at Swinbridge DEV, Ann Bolt was the daughter of Henry and Martha Gayton; she was buried in Malta IL, right next to Annie Smallridge (nee Crockford); George Smallridge (1872-1929) was later also buried there.

It appears to Annie Topham that when John and George Smallridge died relatively young, Martha went to America in response to Thomas' request, taking her mother with her; she was later joined by John's widow Ann and her two children, George William and Laura. Frank Farthing's family followed a year later in 1889.

Roy's son Roy Delbridge Jr., 'cousin' of George Smallridge, lived in Malta IL in 1988. His wife had died in a car accident, leaving him with a young family including a son aged 16 years (in 1988).

C-5.1.1.7 Mary Crockford (1799…1838+) m. Thomas Street

Mary Crockford, baptised at Cutcombe in April 1799, was the seventh known child of yeoman JAMES CROCKFORD by JOANY his wife. Mary married Thomas Street at Cutcombe in April 1819.

C-5.1.1.8 Hugh Crockford (1801…1801)

Hugh Crockford, baptised at Cutcombe 3 September 1801, eighth known child of JAMES CROCKFORD and his wife JOANY, died nine days later 12 September 1801.

C-5.1.1.9 Hugh Crockford (1806…)

Hugh Crockford, baptised at Cutcombe in May 1806, was the ninth and last known child of JAMES CROCKFORD and his wife JOANY.

C-6 Thomas Crockford (…) m. Anne — (…)

Thomas Crockford and his wife Anne — were the parents of:

Bernie Nicholson (pers comm, 10 May 2002) provided information suggesting Hugh married Jane — (see below).

C-6.1. Hugh Crockford (1717…) m. Jane Frost (1718…)

Hugh Crockford, from the parish of Cutcombe, perhaps the son of THOMAS and ANNE CROCKFORD baptised on 30 June 1717 at Cutcombe, Somerset, married Jane Frost, from the parish of Exford, at Wiveliscombe on 29 July 1739 . Jane would have just been "of full age" (just over 21 years old), having been baptised at Exford in July 1718, the daughter of WILLIAM FROST and URSULA WEBBER who had married at Exford on 22 April 1704.

The children of Hugh Crockford and Jane Frost, each baptised at Cutcombe, were:
[G - In England the Gregorian calendar was not adopted until 1752, and the start of year date was changed to 1st January by the same Act of Parliament. The day following 31st December 1751 was decreed to be 1st January 1752 and 2nd September 1752 was followed by 14th September. It appears that Wootton Courtenay adopted the new calendar in 1752, but Cutcombe Parish adopted the Gregorian calendar on 1 January 1754. For this lineage, dates between 1 January and 26 March prior to 1754 have been referenced to the Gregorian year rather than the clerical year in the registers. In some instances a J has been used to indicate a Julian date.]

A Hugh Crockford was buried at Cutcombe on 9 April 1791.

C-6.1.1 Ursula Crockford (1750…1827) m1. John Chapman (1745…1781); m. John Crockford (c1765…1834?)

Ursula Crockford, baptised 17 January 1750G at Cutcombe, daughter of HUGH and JANE CROCKFORD, appears to have been the mother of:
Ursula Crockford and John Chapman, Gentleman, were married in the parish church at Cutcombe on 1 April 1777 by Jas Wilkins, vicar, witnessed by Hugh Crockford and Geo/Jas Chapman, after Banns published March 16th, March 23d and March 30 1777. Ursula and John were both residents of the parish. Ursula and John were the parents of:
A John Chapman was buried on 17 February at Cutcombe - it would seem this John was likely the husband, not the child, of Ursula.

It appears that the widowed Ursula Chapman née Crockford then married, after Banns, to John Crockford at Cutcombe on 5 November 1787, witnessed by James Crockford and James Widlake. Again, both Ursula and John were residents of the parish. John was possibly the son baptised at Cutcombe on 17 July 1751 to THOMAS and ALICE CROCKFORD (rf Lineage C-8). Ursula and John Crockford were the parents of:

Ursula Crockford, aged 78 years, of Winsford, was buried on 24 February 1827 at Cutcombe by Minister George Nibbs [this suggests that Ursula was born c1749]. A John Crockford, aged 59 years, of Winsford, was buried on 1 to 1834 [implying he was born c1765] at Cutcombe by Curate John Southcombe: he would have been 22 years of age if he married 37-year-old Ursula in 1787 [Note: I erroneously had John's age as 59 (corrected to 69 in April 2012) and had thus discounted the possibility of his being Ursula's husband].

Note: the Oakley essay [www.antiessays.com, accessed 15apr2012] has Ursula Chapman born 21 February 1747/48 in Yorkshire England, the daughter of Thomas Chapman, and Thomas Crockford, born 1788, (1) marrying Mary Adams at Cutcombe on 15 June 1813 and (2) dying 28 March 1849 in England. Ursula's story is thus open to questioning. However the Thomas Crockford (husband of Mary Adams) who died 28 March 1849 was aged 72 and buried at Cutcombe: he would have been born circa 1777 and thus not Ursula's son.

C-6.1.2 James Crockford (1752…) ?m. Ann Slowly (1755…)

James CrockfordS1, perhaps* son of HUGH and JANE CROCKFORD baptised at Cutcombe on ?6 January 1752G, was by Ann — the father of:

[*This is quite speculative, though there are no other James Crockfords identifiable in the Cutcombe registers reasonably prior to 1765 (other than James born 1755 who married Joany Crockford - see below). Tony Poole in Taunton, researching in 2003 for Jane Stillwell, thought that James Crockford who married Ann née Slowly was the illegimate son born 1855 of Grace Crockford at Cutcombe, but the will of that James Crockford who died in 1838 shows him the father of children by Joany Crockford; this leaves James the husband of Ann as the son of Hugh and Jane. Tony posed the question : if James Crockford (the yeoman) was a base born son where [did he get] his property from as inheritance laws usually would have seen property passed between fathers and lawful heirs … how [did he become] a yeoman?]

James' wife Ann was likely to have been Ann Slowly - married at Selworthy north of Cutcombe on 14 April 1782. Ann appears to have been baptised at Porlock on 29 April 1755 (she would have been 26 or 27 in April 1782), the daughter of WILLIAM and ANN SLOWLY who had married at Minehead in 1750 (though the bride's surname was not recorded by the vicar, and the Bishop's Transcripts for 1750 are missing) [Tony Poole per Jane Stilwell, 23sep2003]:
          Marriage at Minehead:
1750 May 7: William Slowly & Frank both of Porlock were married.
Tony Poole also located :
          Baptisms at Porlock:

          1751 Apr 17 : David : William & Ann Slowley
          1752 Jul 14 : Mary : William & Ann Slowley
          1755 Apr 29 : Ann : William & Ann Slowley
          1758 Mar 8 : William : William & Ann Slowley
followed four days after the last baptism by the burial of William, arguably the father above:
          Burial at Porlock:
          1758 Mar 12 William Slowley

Tony Poole also located a marriage of an Ann Slowley in Porlock in 1771, but the licence for this wedding shows that she was a spinster (which at least implies she had not been the wife of William).
In the Somerset Family History Society Index, Tony found five James Crockford marriages between 1754 and 1837 in Somerset (otp="of this parish"):
          Date : Parish : Groom : Bride
1780 Apr 2 : Cutcombe : James Crockford otp : Joany Crockford otp

commenting

… This unfortunately gives us a new worry - two weddings of a James Crockford and an Ann within 2 years. Both Jameses are bachelors so they cannot be the same man. Lydiard St Lawrence however is quite a long way from Cutcombe (10 miles or more), and Dr. Campbell's Index shows a baptism at Lydiard St. Lawrence in 1781 of a Thomas, son of James and Ann. This is the only child of this couple on the Index, so it's unfortunately not possible to state categorically that the Cutcombe children also belong to this Lydiard family. However, as Lydiard is very near Taunton, the later children may have been baptised in the town (which … is not included in Dr. Campbell's Index).

Although he did not find a Will proven for John Crockford, Tony did note the following sundry Wills in the several indexes at the Somerset Record Office:
Samuel Crockford of Minehead 1695 WDC
James Crockford, Linendraper of Minehead 1724 MON/6/C
James Crockford of Cutcombe 1838 EDW 153/616
Thomas Crockford of Cutcombe 1849 EDW 230/546
William Crockford of Cutcombe 1854 EDW 258/91

An Ann Crockford was buried at Cutcombe on 16 September 1810, noted in the Taunton Courier:
1810 27Sep Crockford Ann - drowned at Cutcombe nr Dunster

C-6.1.2.1 John Crockford (1798…1851+) m. Hannah Poole (1787…1846))

John Crockford, son of JAMES and ANN CROCKFORD, baptised at Cutcombe on 10 June 1798S1, married Hannah Poole on 5 May 1824 at St James, Taunton; they were the parents of:

The 1851 census shews John widowed: [page xx, entry 122]

Tony Poole (per Jane Stillwell, 23sep03) located the parish register entry for Hannah's death, implying she was born 1785-6 (unless her age at demise has been rounded):
Taunton St. James: 19 Jun 1846
Hannah Crockford of High St, St Mary Magdalen, buried, aged 60
Tony also located a baptism at St James', Taunton, in 1787 which is likely to be for the Hannah who married John Crockford [amongst other possibilities is Hannah Poole baptised at Pitminster adjacent to Taunton in 1785, daughter of William and Sarah ]:

Tony found John Crokkford listed as a Schoolmaster in an 1861 Somerset Directory, at Middle St. in Taunton, but not listed in the 1866 issue, "…but of course he may just have retired from his business by then". Tony was unable to locate details regarding the death of John Crockford, but searching the GRO death index for John Crockfords between 1865 and 1878 located three Johns close to the correct age:
Year/Qtr Deceased Age District Vol Page
1873 Apr-Jun John Crockford 72 Wangford 4a 448
1873 Oct-Dec John Crockford 74 Poplar 1c 520
1878 Apr-Jun John Crockford 78 Bridgnorth 6a 432
Tony commented:
"… The last two have ages consistent with John's birthdate. I searched the Probate Indexes for signs of Wills belonging to these men, but found only one - the first, who was a Suffolk farmer. The others did not appear in the Probate index. All three are a very long way (over 150 miles) from Taunton, so it's unlikely they are your John anyway. … He may have died after 1878 of course. He's not in the 1881 Census.

C-6.1.2.1.1 Louisa Crockford (1829…1885) m. John Gill (1825…1884)

Louisa Crockford, daughter of JOHN CROCKFORD and HANNAH POOLE, was born at Taunton SOM in 1829. The 1851 census shews Louisa in Charlotte Duck's residence of five unmarried millineres and dressmakers: [page xx, entry 70]

Pos = position in Household; MS = marital status (S:single, M:married, W:widowed); X = Employment Status (E:employer, e:employed, n:neither).

Louisa married widower John Gill on 28 August 1859 at St James, Taunton. John, the son of JOSEPH GILL (c1779…c1861) and JO(H)ANNA VYVIAN (1791…pre1838) had been born August 1825 at St Breock, Cornwall. Louisa and John were the parents of:

In the 1881 census Louisa was noted as "formerly dressmaker". The family emigrated via Victoria (arriving 2 September 1884) to South Australia aboard the Liguria.
John Gill died at sea during the voyage on 11 August 1884. Louisa Gill née Crockford died in North Adelaide on 12 February 1885.

C-6.1.2.1.1.1 James Crockford Gill (1867…1945) m. Matilda Brittain (1867…1949)

James Crockford Gill, son of JOHN GILL and LOUISA CROCKFORD, born at Bolton, Lancs in November 1867, married Matilda Brittain ("Til") on 26 October 1891 in Port Pirie, South Australia. James, a scholar at Little Bolton in 1881S4, emigrated to Australia aboard the Liguria, arriving in Victoria on 2 September 1884. Matilda, born 6 July 1867 in the Lyndoch Valley in South Australia's Barossa district, was the daughter of ROBERT BRITTAIN (c1827…1905) and SUSAN(NAH) DYE (c1831-1919). James and Matilda were the parents of:

James Crockford Gill died on 21 September 1945 at Nedlands, Western Australia. He had lived for thirteen years in South Australia and 45 years in Western Australia (Nedlands and Korda). Matilda Gill née Brittain died on 18 October 1849 at Port Pirie HospitalS5.

C-6.1.2.1.1.1.1 Myrtle Florence Gill (1891…1967) m. Frederick Knappstein (1891…1938)

Myrtle Florence Gill, first-born of JAMES CROCKFORD GILL and MATILDA BRITTAIN, born December 1891 at Solomontown, Port Pirie, married Frederick William Knappstein on 23 June 1920 at Dulwich, South Australia. Frederick, born May 1891 near Clare, South Australia, was the son of JOSEPH HERMAN KNAPPSTEIN and RUTH (ROSE) READ. James and Matilda were the parents of five children. Frederick Knappstein died on 21 December 1938. Myrtle Florence Knappstein née Gill died 2 August 1967 and was buried in Clare Cemetery.

Gregory James Crockford Gill, son of JOHN GILL and LOUISA CROCKFORD, born at Bolton, Lancs in 1871, emigrated to Australia with his parents, arriving in Victoria aboard the Liguria on 2 September 1884. Gregory married Maude Eleline Chester on 25 January 1897 at St Matthew's CoE, Guilford, Western Australia. Maude was the daughter of SYDNEY CHESTER (1845…1911) and BETSEY DEVENISH ROBINS (1849…1917).
Gregory and Maude were the parents of:

C-6.1.3 Jane Crockford (1854…1832) m. George Gorton (…)

Jane Crockford, perhaps* the daughter of HUGH and JANE CROCKFORD baptised on 13/18 February 1754 at Cutcombe, and George Gorton, both of the parish of Cutcombe, were married by Banns at Cutcombe "between the hours of ten and eleven forenoon" on 24 December 1788, witnessed by Thomas Crockford and James Widlake.
[* This is speculative as explained under Lineage C-9.1 (cf.), Jane Crockford m. William Chapman]

Children of George and Jane appear to have included:

George Gorton died aged 82 years on 13 August 1823 (implying he was born between mid-August 1740 and mid-August 1741). Jane Gorton died aged 78 years on 18 February 1832.

C-6.1.3.1 Joan Gorton (1790…) m. Thomas Westcott (c1772…1854)

Banns of Marriage between Thomas Westcott and Joan Gorton both of [Cutcombe] Parish were published on February the 24th, March ye 3d and March ye 10th 1811. Joan Gorton, spinster, and Thomas Westcott, widower, both of Cutcombe parish, were married on 19 March 1811 after Banns at Cutcombe; Joan signed the register and Thomas made his mark in the presence of William Langdon and James Widlake.

Thomas had previously married Jane Pugsly, at Cutcombe on 27 March 1802. By Jane he was the father of:

Jane Westcott was buried at Cutcombe on 19 February 1809.

Thomas and Joan had several children:

Thomas, desrcibed as a butcher in 1813-18 and 1824-1830, and as a labourer in 1822 and 1833, died aged 82 years and was buried at Cutcombe on 16 July 1854.

C-6.1.3.2 Mary Gorton (1792…) m. Henry Doble (…)

Mary Gorton, spinster, and Henry Doble, bachelor, both of Cutcombe parish, were married on 1 August 1809 at Cutcombe by Licence and with the "consent of [Mary's] Parent"; both signed the register in the presence of George Gorton, Joan Gorton and Amos Widlake [his mark]. Mary would have been 17 years old.Henry and Mary had at least two children baptised at Cutcombe:

C-6.1.4 Joany Crockford (1759…1834) m. James Crockford (1755…1838)

Joany Crockford, daughter of HUGH and JANE CROCKFORD baptised at Cutcombe in October 1759, married James Crockford at Cutcombe in April 1780, witnessed by Hugh Crockford and John Siderfin. James and Joany were both of the parish of Cutcombe. It appears that James was baptised in December 1755 at Cutcombe, the base child of GRACE CROCKFORD. For further details refer to follow this link.

C-7 Elizabeth Crockford (…)

Elizabeth Crockford was the mother of:

C-8 Thomas Crockford (…) m.(c1748) Alice — (…1775)

Thomas Crockford and Alice — were the parents of:

Alice Crockford, wife of Thomas Crockford of Cutcombe, was buried at Exford on 12 January 1775.
[Perhaps Alice was the daughter on JAMES and ANN THOMAS baptised 7 March 1727J at Exford.]

C-9 John Crockford (c1730…) m. Mary Addams (…)

John Crockford and Mary Addams were married at Cutcombe in 1752; they seem to have had at least three children including:

C-9.1 Jane Crockford (1753…1844) m. William Chapman (…)

Jane Crockford, perhaps* baptised 26 August 1753 at Cutcombe to JOHN CROCKFORD and his wife MARY ADDAMS, was the mother of:

Jane Crockford married William Chapman at Cutcombe 6 July 1782 (witnessed by John Chapman and John Siderfin); they were the parents of:

Jane Chapman, aged 91 years, was buried at Cutcombe on 17 November 1844 by vicar J. M. King.

[* This remains speculative as there were two Jane Crockfords baptised at Cutcombe within six months during 1753-4, the first [A] in August 1753 to John and Mary and the second [B] in February 1754 to Hugh and Jane. It is presumed herein that one of these was the Jane that married George Gorton in 1788, and that the other married William Chapman in 1782 following a dalliance. In England the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1752, and the start of year date was changed to 1st January by the same Act of Parliament. The day following 31st December 1751 was decreed to be 1st January 1752 and 2nd September 1752 was followed by 14th September. Cutcombe Parish adopted the Gregorian calendar on 1 January 1754. In this work [G] denotes Gregorian and [J] Julian year. The proposed determination of Jane's parents is based on the range of birthdates possible based on the ages noted in Cutcombe burial records for Jane Gorton and Jane Chapman, presented below:
     # Name - Baptised - Parents
     A Jane Crockford - 26 August 1753 - JOHN and MARY CROCKFORD
     B Jane Crockford - 13/18 February 1754 [G] - HUGH and JANE CROCKFORD
     # Name - Buried - Age - Implied birthdate range
     B Jane Gorton - 18 February 1832 - 78y - 19 February 1753 17 February 1754
     A Jane Chapman - 17 November 1844 - 91y - 18 November 1752 17 November 1753
Based on the above it is considered more likely that:
     • Jane baptised in August 1753 to John and Mary [A] married William Chapman, while
     • Jane baptised February 1754 to Hugh and Jane [B] married George Gorton.
A possible contra-indication is the marriage of Ursula Crockford (daughter of Hugh and Jane) to John Chapman in 1777 and a likehood of a close relationship between the Hugh Crockford family and the Chapmans. Also the relationship of Thomas Crockford, witness at the Crockford-Gorton wedding, is a puzzle. Further concerns are raised by the not unreasonable assumptions used that the baptisms were soon after birth (say, within four weeks) and that the burials were within a couple of days of death, although there are several (Crockford) instances in the Cutcombe registers where the interval between infant baptism and burial was much greater than the age (in weeks and days) noted in the register.]
Jane may even have been another child not identified in the surviving Cutcombe records.

C-9.1.1 Thomas Crockford (1776…1849) m. Mary Adams (1789…1877)

Lineage C-14 on the 26 September 2003 WebSite
Thomas Crockford
, baptised at Cutcombe on 20 October 1776, was the base-born son of JANE CROCKFORD and possibly fathered by WILLIAM CHAPMAN (it appears Jane Crockford later married William Chapman - rf Lineage C-9.1 above). A bachelor farmer Thomas Crockford and spinster Mary Adams, both of the parish of Cutcombe, were married at Cutcombe on 15 June 1813 after publication of Banns.

Terri Crockford [to Jane Stillwell, 7 August 2003] noted that Mary, baptised 24 October 1789 at Cutcombe, was daughter of WILLIAM ADAMS and ANN BLACKMORE, who had married at Cutcombe on 2 April 1787; other children of William and Ann were Robert Adams (born 23 June 1787), James Adams (born 28 April 1792), Charlotte Adams (born 17 January 1795), Martha Adams (born 10 April 1798), Harriett Adams (born 22 September 1801) and Ann Adams (born 26 January 1805).

Children of the prolific though unfortunate Thomas and Mary Crockford, all born at Cutcombe, included:
Thomas' occupation was recorded as a farmer in 1814 and 1815, a maltstor in 1816, a farmer from 1817 to 1828, and an Innkeeper in 1831 and 1835. He built the Rest and Be Thankful Inn at Cutcombe about 1820, a welcome stopping place for the horse drawn carriages at the top of the divide between Minehead and Exeter.

In 1851, according to the census taken that year, Mary Crockford née Adams was a widowed annuitant (initially noted as a farmer's widow) aged 62 years residing in the hamlet of Wheddon Cross; the census shews a William, aged 31, as an unmarried farmer of 90 acres at Wheddon Farm.

In the 1861 census (schedule entry #6) has Mary Crockford at Cutcombe, a widow aged 72 years and retired farmer's wife, born at Cutcombe. The previous entry in the schedule was for the Rest and Be Thankful Inn, then occupied by inkeeper Francis Clatworthy (30, born Hunsham, Devon), his wife Maria (30, born Exton), and their Cutcombe-born children Thomas(6), Fred (4), George (2) and Frank (1), and servant Emily Evans (15, born Cutcombe).

The 1871 census shews Mary Crockford a widowed annuitant at Wheddon Cross; her son William, aged 50, is now a married farmer of 80 acres at North Wheddon and living nearby with his Minehead-born wife Sarah J Crockford née Merrick (also aged 50).

Mary Crockford née Adams was buried at Cutcombe by Revd W H King on 3 February 1877, aged 87 years.

Note that another Cutcombe-born widow Mary Crockford, nurse aged 64 years, is listed in the 1851 census residing near [her son] John Crockford and his family at Little Hawkwell Farm, Cutcombe. This was Mary Crockford née Ridler (or Redler), widow of agricultural labourer James Crockford who died at Cutcombe in 1848, aged 64 years. This Mary Crockford is listed in the 1861 census as a nurse aged 74 years, with possible son George in Wheddon Cross. Mary born 1786 was buried at Cutcombe in 1864.
For further details on this family (Mary and James) refer to Lineage C-5.1.1.2.

C-9.1.1.1 Mary Crockford Adams (?1811…1881+) m. George Hooper (1804…1881-)

Mary Crockford Adams, spinster of Cutcombe, married George Hooper, bachelor of Exford parish, at Cutcombe in November 1831; witnesses were William Thorne and Elizabeth Wood. Mary was the first-born (1811) of MARY ADAMS who married THOMAS CROCKFORD in 1813. George had been baptised on 26 May 1804 at Exford, the son of ARTHUR HOOPER and ANN. George (a farmer) and Mary had one daughter:
In 1881 census Mary Crockford Adams was head of household: Oldshall Farm, Dulverton - occupation listed as Farmer of 300 Acres. She lived there with her daughter and daughter's family.

Soon after the marriage of Mary and George, a Thomas Hooper, bachelor of Cutcombe, and Ann Baker, spinster of Cutcombe, were married by banns at Cutcombe on 11 January 1834; witnesses were Mary Baker, Sarah Hooper and William Cavill. Their union produced several children. It seems likely that Ann Baker was the girl baptised 11 May 1810 at Cutcombe, daughter of THOMAS BAKER and GRACE CROCKFORD who married on 17 February 1801 at Cutcombe (see Lineage C-5.1.1.3).

An Anne Hooper of Cutcombe, aged 62 years, was buried at Cutcombe on 27 March 1869 by vicar J. M. King.

C-9.1.1.1.1 Mary Ann Hooper (1832…) m. John Norman (1822…1881+)

Mary Ann Hooper, baptised 22 December 1832 at Cutcombe, daughter of GEORGE HOOPER and MARY CROCKFORD ADAMS, married John Norman (born 1822 at Winsford). In the 1881 census John Norman was a farm bailiff. It is possible that John was the son baptised 13 April 1821 to JOHN NORMAN and his wife MARY CLATWORTHY [see Norman lineage].

Mary Ann Hooper and John Norman had three children:
In 1881 census Mary Ann Norman and her family were reportedly living at Oldshall Farm, Dulverton where her mother Mary Crockford Adams was head of household - occupation listed as Farmer of 300 Acres.

C-9.1.1.2 Thomas F Crockford (1818…1880) m. Jane Bowden (1822…)

Thomas F Crockford, bachelor labourer, and Jane Bowden, servant spinster, both of Cutcombe and of full age [that is, over twenty-one years], were married in the parish at Cutcombe in April 1846. Witnesses were John F Gregory and Mary Bennett. Thomas, baptised at Cutcombe on 22 September 1818, was a son of farmer THOMAS CROCKFORD and his wife MARY ADAMS. Jane, who made her mark [X] in the register, was a daughter of labourer JAMES BOWDEN.
In 1841, according to the census, Jane Bowden (junior) was a farm servant employed at Hill Farm, Exford, by John and Maria Vesey: [piece 936, page 13 (1240)]

Apparently Thomas' choice of wife did not accord with his parents' choice and for this reason he was disowned. In 1847 Thomas and Jane emigrated to the United States of America, living at Phoenix, New York, for a year then moving to Granby, Oswego Co, New York. The farm Thomas bought when he settled in America is still [September 1998] in family hands - those of David Crockford. Thomas and Jane had three known children:
Thomas Crockford died in May 1880.

C-9.1.1.2.1 William H Crockford (1849…1903) m. Sarah Jane Pierce

C-9.1.1.2.3 Thomas F Crockford (1855…1891) m. Jemima Baldwin

Thomas F Crockford, youngest of three children of THOMAS F CROCKFORD and JANE BOWDEN, was born in January 1855 in New York. In December 1873, Thomas and Jemima Baldwin were married in Meridan NY. Jemima, from Ira NY, was the daughter of HENRY BALDWIN and AUERLIA BATES. Thomas and Jemima parented two children:
Thomas was a travelling salesman for a while. He and his brother William had an argument over money at some time, after which Thomas vowed never to speak to William again, and they parted company permanently.

C-9.1.1.2.3.1 Henry William Crockford (1876…1950) m. Clara Elizabeth Simpson

Henry William Crockford, son of THOMAS F CROCKFORD and JEMIMA BALDWIN, was born in May 1876 in Ira NY. He married Clara Elizabeth Simpson, daughter of THEODORE and EMELINE SIMPSON. Henry and Clara had six children:
Henry died in December 1950; his tombstone in West Groton reads simply “Henry W”. Clara was buried in Colorado.

Regarding Clara Elizabeth Simpson, Kris Farmer (24 December 2002) wrote:
"…she is ½ Indian, and her mother was full blood Indian, who actually lived on an Indian reservation in New York. The problem is is that I do not know Clara's mother's last name, her first name being Emeline (I think). I also do not know what kind of Indian she was. I would love to know more about the Indian heritage to my family. Any information would be greatly appreciated!"

C-9.1.1.2.3.1.1 Marion Alice Crockford (1911…) m1. Clive Reynolds, m2. Cleon Humphery

Marion Alice Crockford, daughter of HENRY WILLIAM CROCKFORD and CLARA ELIZABETH SIMPSON, was born in March 1911, Groton City NY. Marion was first married to Clive Reynolds, son of MILTON REYNOLDS and LEDA DAVIDSON. Marion and Clive had two children. Marion later married Cleon Humphery, by whom she bore two further children. Marion died at Colorado Springs.

C-9.1.1.2.3.1.2 Thomas Henry Crockford (1913…1994) m. Beatrice Ruth McLean

Thomas Henry Crockford, son of HENRY WILLIAM CROCKFORD and CLARA ELIZABETH SIMPSON, was born in June 1911. Thomas married Beatrice Ruth McLean, daughter of WILLARD McLEAN and ELLA SOUTHWORTH (Thomas' nephew Lynn Eastman married Beatrice's sister Ethel). Thomas and Beatrice raised five children.

C-9.1.1.2.3.1.3 Ethel Irene Crockford (1914…) m. John Eastman

Ethel Irene Crockford, daughter of HENRY WILLIAM CROCKFORD and CLARA ELIZABETH SIMPSON, was born in February 1914 in Genva NY. Ethel married John Eastman; they raised one son.

C-9.1.1.2.3.1.4 Milton Eugene Crockford (1922/34…) m1. Jessie Cooper; m2. Mary Doyle née Spicer; m3. Denise —

Milton Eugene Crockford, youngest of six children of HENRY WILLIAM (or WILLIAM HENRY) CROCKFORD and CLARA ELIZABETH SIMPSON, was born in 1922/34 in Groton City NY. Milton married three times, his first wife being Jessie Cooper (daughter of GEORGE COOPER), by whom he had six children. Milton's second wife was Mary Doyle née Spicer, whom he married in Salom Springs, Arkansas; their union produced one child. About 1985, in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Milton married Denise —; they had three sons.

C-9.1.1.3 William Crockford (1821…1875) m. Sarah Jane Merrick (c1821…1871+)

William Crockford, baptised 30 January 1821; was a son of THOMAS CROCKFORD and MARY ADAMS. William was the Executor appointed in 1846 for his father's estate. The 1851 census has the following entries: [piece 1920, folio 264, page 1, entry 1 (1242)]

On 4 April 1857 William Crockford, bachelor farmer aged 36 years and son of Thomas Crockford, and Sarah Jane Merrick, spinster aged 35 years and daughter of JAMES MERRICK, were married by licence at Cutcombe, after banns. Their wedding was witnessed by John Gem? and Mary Ann Merrick. The 1861 census has the following entries: [piece 1920, folio 264, page 1, entry 13 (1242)]

William Court Serv Unmarried 21 . Wooton Courtenay SOM 1840

The marriage of Sarah to William is the only contemporary event involving a Merrick entered in the Cutcombe Church of England parish registers. It appears that Sarah bore William Crockford no children. The identification of Thomas May as 'son' , born at Wellington, is puzzling.

The 1871 census shews William, aged 50, is now a married farmer of 80 acres living with his wife Sarah J at North Wheddon; his mother Mary Crockford a widowed annuitant at Wheddon Cross.

William Crockford of Wheddon Farm, aged 53 years, was buried at Cutcombe in March 1875.

C-9.1.1.4 John Crockford (1823…1870) m. Hannah — (c1828…1880)

Labourer John Crockford, son born February 1823 of THOMAS CROCKFORD and MARY ADAMS [or was he the son of JAMES CROCKFORD and MARY RIDLER] married Winsford-born Hannah —; seven known children were:
