Locality
This family hails from north-western Somerset. The work below was largely prepared prior to June 2014 independent of the extensive Hagley compilation The Hagley Herald 1997 A Brief Historical record of the Hagleys of Somerset [accesssed June 2014]; it begins at reference “1.1.5.4.7.1 Mary Pearce – 41” of that work.
Early
Generations
- 1 Charles Hagley (c1802
1867) m. Ann Pearse (c1800
1867-71)
- Charles Hagley, born circa 1804 at Old Cleeve, Somerset, married Mary Pearse at St Andrew's parish church, Old Cleeve, on 14 February 1833. Mary had been born circa 1801 at Withycombe, Somerset, possibly the child baptised on 3 May 1800 at St Andrew's, Old Cleeve, for WILLIAM and MARY.
Charles Hagley and Mary Pearse were the parents of (at least):
- ANN HAGLEY (born 11 December 1833, baptised at St Andrew's, Old Cleeve, on 6 December 1834, father a yeoman at Combe, Withycombe; The Hagley Herald 1997 notes Ann died 29 December 1849 at Withycombe),
- WILLIAM HAGLEY (baptised 10 September 1835 at St Nicholas', Withycombe, father a farmer at Coombe (mother not noted); emigrated to New Zealand, arriving Lyttlelton in the Sebastopol on 14 December 1861i; death registered 3q1879 (19 August 1879, aged 44 years) at Wairau, Auckland, NZ; married Elizabeth Hulcup in 1866 in New Zealand, four issue [Jane (1867), Charles (1870), Mary (1871), Thomas (1874); possibly also a later issue to Elizabeth [Elizabeth Martha, 1883]]),
- THOMAS HAGLEY (born circa 1837 at Withycombe; married Mary Crockford at Cutcombe on 17 March 1869, at least three issue),
- JANE HAGLEY (born circa December 1840 (6 months old in 6 June 1841 census) at Withycombe; died 19 October 1890, Withycombe, Somerset) and
- JOHN HAGLEY (baptised 8 July 1844 at St Nicholas', Withycombe, father a farmer at Coombe; married to Elizabeth Crockford on 8 August 1873 at St Cleer, Cornwall, four known issue).
- The 1841 census shews Charles, Mary and their first four children at Coombe Farm, Withycombe:

Thomas Hagley (c1837
1890) m. Mary (Polly) Crockford (1835
1917)
- Thomas Hagley, aged 32, born circa 1837 at Withycombe SOM, married Mary (“Polly”) Crockford, aged 33, at St John the Evangalist's parish church, Cutcombe, on 17 March 1869. Mary Crockford was sixth the of ten children born to farmer WILLIAM CROCKFORD and his wife JANE FISH, who had married at Cutcombe on 24 March 1824. Thomas was a son of CHARLES HAGLEY of Withycombe and MARY PEARSE, who had married at St Andrew's parish church, Old Cleeve, on 14 February 1833.
Thomas and Mary produced at least
three children:

Thomas Hagley died early of tuberculosis, predeceasing his
wife; he was buried at Withycombe, St Nicholas SOM. Apparently tuberculosis
plagued the family for many years, the early Ohio Hagleys dying out of it,
and William taking it to New Zealand with him where it caused his early death.
The National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966 notes:
The Will of Thomas Hagley late of Coombe Farm in the Parish of Withycombe in the County of Somerset Yeoman who died 19 October 1890 at Coombe Farm was proved at Taunton by Mary Hagley of Coombe Farm Widow the Relict the sole Executrix [Proved 8 December 1890; Personal Estate £861 8s]

- Mary Hagley née Crockford passed away in March 1917;
her funeral is described in the following obituary (with annotations from
Carolyn Hostetler):
- WITHYCOMBE A very old and respected resident - Mrs. M.
Hagley - widow of the late Mr. T. Hagley - passed away at Coombe Farm
on 25th ult at the ripe age of 81 years. Although ailing for some time
past, Mrs. Hagley only took to her bed about a week before her death and
bore with great resignation the symptoms of senile decay. The funeral
took place here on Saturday last, the chapel service being conducted by
the rector, the Rev. G. W. Govan, who accompanied by the choir met the
cortege at the lych-gate. As they entered the church the organist (Mr.
Foate) played "He wipes the tears from every eye" and later
the "Dead March" and hymns 401 and 499 were included in an impressive
service, the 90th Psalm being chanted to Barnby. An address by the rector
was couched in very sympathetic terms, one of the deceased's sons* being
a churchwarden and his colleague (Mr. Foate) read the lesson. The mourners
were Mr. C. Hagley†, Mr. T. Hagley‡, Miss Hagley§,
Mrs Cockle|| and Mr. C. Case and the coffin (of unpolished oak) was laid
in a grave beautifully lined with moss studded with flowers. Messrs. H.
Pearce**, S. Griffith, T. Weybourne††, B. Case, J. Gould‡‡,
and W. Case were the bearers. Dr. F. G. Hayes, Mr. T. H. Leversha§§,
and E. F. Case, Miss Howells, Mr. Maidment, Mrs. Gratton, Miss Edbrooke,
and others attended the ceremony. The floral tributes, which contained
some exquisite blooms, were as follows
- To dear mother from her devoted and loving children -
'Rest in Peace'
- With deepest sympathy from her loving cousin E. Cockle.
- In affectionate remembrance H. M. Hatherly - (Bristol)
- In affectionate remembrance from her nephew and niece
(Minehead)
- With deepest sympathy from the workpeople at Coombe -

- A last tribute of affection and regard from Rev. and
Mrs. G. W. Maitland Govan, Miss Eileen Govan, Miss N. Howells, (Withycombe
Rectory)

1.1.1 Elizabeth Annie Hagley (1870
1951)
- Elizabeth Annie Hagley (Annie),
daughter of THOMAS HAGLEY and MARY (Polly) CROCKFORD, was born September 1870.
Like her brothers, to whom she was very close, Annie never married.
- Elizabeth Ann Hagley [“Annie”] aged 80, spinster of Carhampton, Somersetshire, died 2 March 1951 at The Tone Vale Hospital, Norton Fitzwarren, Somersetshire: Probate on her Estate (effects £571 14s. 6.) was granted to Mary Fish and Ella Letitia Fish spinsters on 16 April 1951 at London. Her cousin Amy Crockford wrote in June 1951 that the doctor had said that Annie had "taken queer in the head", but inferred that it was only old age. Annie was buried at Withycombe SOM "with the rest of the family"; the same hymns were used at the funeral service "as for Charlie".
Ella Letitia Fish (born 1882; died aged 69 on 20 February 1952) was a daughter of Henry Fish and his wife Letitia Shepherd, of East Quantoxhead, Somerset. Ella had a younger sister Mary Fish (born circa 1888).
1.1.2 Charles Hagley (c1873
1945)
- Charles Hagley, son of THOMAS HAGLEY and MARY
(Polly) CROCKFORD, was born c1873 at Withycombe. Charlie lived at Coombe Farm,
Withycombe (visited by Walter William Crockford in 1920); after leaving Coombe
Farm he and his sister Annie lived at Carhampton. He was apparently very handsome,
a ladies’ man, and had had a serious girlfriend . Charlie was a churchwarden
at Withycombe in 1917, at the time of his mother’s funeral; he predeceased
Annie.
Charles Hagley, aged 72, of High Street, Carhampton, Somersetshire, died 9 August 1945: Administration on his Estate (effects £355) was granted to Elizabeth Ann Hagley spinster on 5 October 1945 at Llandudno [Gwynedd , Wales].
1.1.3 Thomas Hagley (c1875
1922)
- Thomas Hagley, son of THOMAS HAGLEY and MARY
(Polly) CROCKFORD, was born c1875 at Withycombe. Thomas, who never married,
survived his parents.
Thomas Hagley, aged 48, of Coombe Farm, Withycombe, Somersetshire, died 7 December 1922: Administration on his Estate (effects £608) was granted to Charles Hagley farmer on 3 January 1923 in London.
-
1.2 John
Hagley (1844
1907) m. Elizabeth Crockford (1844
1916)
- John Hagley, bachelor farmer, and Elizabeth
Crockford, spinster, each aged 29 years, were married in August 1873
by Revd John Smallridge at the Bible Christian chapel at Hocken's House, St
Cleer CON; witnesses were Revd Edgcombe and Annie Smalbridge. [The certified
copy of the Crockford Hagley marriage entry has John and Annie Smalbridge
rather than Smallridge]. John Hagley, born 2 May 1844 and baptised 8 July 1844 at St Nicholas', Withycombe, was a son of farmer CHARLES HAGLEY (of Coombe [Farm], Withycombe) and his wife MARY PEARSE. John Hagley lived at Withycombe SOM at the time of his marriage in 1873. Elizabeth Crockford, born 1844, was the seventh of eight children born
to farmer WILLIAM CROCKFORD and his wife JANE FISH (see
Crockford
notes). At the time of her marriage Elizabeth
was staying with John Smallridge and his wife Ann Crockford, her younger sister,
in St Cleer.
- Elizabeth and John remained adherents to the Church of England
at St Nicholas' parish, Withycombe, Somerset.

- eYoB = estimated year of birth (Not included in Census:
based on simple subtraction of age from Census year).
- John and Elizabeth had four known children:
- JOHN HAGLEY (born 1873, England; died 6 April 1901, Deerfield, Ohio),
- ALICE HAGLEY (born October 1875, Gupworthy Farm Withycombe; died 28 August 1964, Deerfield, Ohio; married
Humbert Harlow Loomis),
- WILLIAM PEARSE HAGLEY (born 13 August 1877, Withycombe, Somerset; married Charlotte Lazarus; died 7 April 1961, Deerfield, Ohio; daughter Mildred. Lived in Portage Co oh) and
- ELIZABETH MARY HAGLEY (born 8 August 1879 Gupworthy
Farm, died in Ohio; married John Hubbs; no children).
- Carolyn Hostetler wrote (January 2003):
"Amusingly, the tombstone for John Hagley, my grandmother
Alice's elder brother, also lies. He was born after a very short pregnancy
following their wedding in 1873, so they just made him a year younger. Imagine
the circumstances of their wedding, Elizabeth and John down in Cornwall there
the Rev. Smallridge had a church, and apparently stayed there for the wedding.
Thus, they were not married at their usual Anglican church at Cutcombe or
Withycombe. The Rev. John S. was a non-conformist pastor. I've always guessed
that he met Anne while preaching at the little chapel at Luckwell Brdge. That
chapel has been re-modeled into a dwelling. It was within walking distance
of West Hawkwell.
From my earliest childhood I was aware of the Smallridges. Especially
