1756)
- William Fish,
baptised at Stogursey on 16 December 1672, the son of WILLIAM and ELIZABETH
FISH, married Ann Sweetin at Stogursey on 19 November 1695.
They were the parents of:
- EDWARD FISH
(baptised 6 October 1695 at Stogursey (born in Somerton so perhaps not their
child)),
- JOHN FISH
(baptised 18 February 1703 at Stogursey; perhaps married Judith Hurly, Stogursey 1730 ),

Note however that
Deborah Howells [per eMail, 7 May 2012] offers a different parentage for the John Fish who married Judith Hurly [data provided to Deborah some years ago]:
I have taken my family back to John Fish who married Judith Hurly. However, I have John's parents as Nathaniel Ffifh c1680 and Joane c1685. Both were born in Somerset. John was christened 7 April 1702 and married on 30 March 1730 in Stogursey. Do you know of any Nathaniel Ffith/Fish who married a Joane as I have not been able to go back further.

1.1.2.1.1 George Fish (1770…) m. Elizabeth Bishop (1765…)
- This section is based on data from Martin Southwood's West Somerset Parish Register Transcription Website and the Orange Family WebSite on RootsWeb [accessed 10jun2011].
George Fish, eldest son of ALEXANDER CUNNIBER [Coneybeare] FISH and his wife MARY ADAMS, was baptised 5 February 1770 at Stogursey. George married Elizabeth Bishop on 2 January 1800 at Stogursey; it seems that Elizabeth had been baptised to JOHN [a chandler at Shurton] and ANN at Stogursey on 5 November 1765. George and Elizabeth had two known issue:
-
- ANN FISH (baptised 22 February 1800 at Stogursey) and
- MARY FISH (baptised 27 March 1802 at Stogursey).
-
- Perhaps it is George's family listed in the 1841 census at Stogursey as follows:

1.1.2.1.2 ♦ Joseph Fish (1771…1851) m. Elizabeth
Perrett (1771…1814-1841)
- Joseph Fish
married Elizabeth Perrett at Stogursey on 27 November 1792 .
Elizabeth, baptised 1 February 1771, Stogursey, was the second of eleven known
children born to THOMAS PERRETT and his wife MARY MILLARD. Bernie Nicholson
(pers comm, 10 May 2002) has Joseph baptised in the Parish Church in
Stogursey on 9 November 1771, the second son of ALEXANDER CUNNIBER [Coneybeare]
FISH and his wife MARY ADAMS; Joseph had two brothers and four sisters. Bernie
was hopeful of linking Joseph back two further generations to 1724. Early
records at Stogursey also refer to a William Fish and Ann Sweeting being married
in 1695 and Wiliam ffifh shoomaker' being buried on 19
December 1729.
- Joseph and Elizabeth
had eleven known children :
- GEORGE FISH
(baptised December 1792, Stogursey, died 1842, Cutcombe; married Joan Crockford,
August 1819, Cutcombe),
- ALEXANDER
CONYBEARE FISH (baptised June 1794 (publicly received July 1794), Stogursey;
married Elizabeth Stone at Over Stowey on 14 June 1829),
- MARY FISH
(baptised January 1796, Kilve SOM),
- JONAS FISH
([?Thomas?] born October 1797, baptised November 1797, Kilve, died 1868 at
Hawkington Cutcombe; never married),
- GREGORY FISH
(born June 1799, baptised July 1799, Kilve; married Harriett Ward, August
1823, Bristol),
- JANE FISH (born May 1801, baptised June 1801, Kilve; married William Crockford, March
1824, Cutcombe),
- ANN FISH
(baptised May 1804, Cutcombe),
- JOSEPH FISH
(baptised April 1806, Cutcombe; married Marrianne Brewer, March 1837, Cutcombe;
in 1851 and 1881 Joseph and Mary Ann were living in Selworthy),
- JAMES FISH
(baptised June 1807, Cutcombe; first married Mary Parker, November 1836, Bristol,
later married Mary Thristle, March 1841, Bristol),
- ANN FISH (born 1811 according to Bernie Nicholson (pers comm, 2002) died a spinster on 13 July 1880 at Stogursey),
- HANNAH FISH
(born August 1812, baptised October 1812, Cutcombe; married Thomas Langdon,
October-December 1850, Bristol; the mother of Sarah Anne, baptised July 1843
at Cutcombe for Hannah Fish, single woman of Hawkington farm, Cutcombe) and
- ROBERT FISH
(baptised October 1814, Cutcombe (when his father was noted as a farmer at
West Hawkington, Cutcombe); ?married).
- A Mary Fish married Thomas
Triggoll at Over Stowey SOM in March 1828, shortly before Alexander [Conybeare]
Fish, son of JOSEPH FISH and ELIZABETH PERRETT, married Elizabeth Stone thereat
in June 1829. It is very tempting to consider Mary Fish and Alexander Fish
as siblings: Joseph and Elizabeth Perrett had a daughter Mary baptised at
Kilve in 1796. However census records consistently indicate Mary Triggoll
née Fish had been born about 1802 at Over Stowey [there were
no Fish CoE baptisms at Over Stowey in this period] so unless Joseph and Elizabeth
had another perhaps non-CoE Mary circa 1802 [so far no supporting record
has been found] this does not appear a valid construction [note however that
Joseph and Elizabeth had children Jane baptised 1801 at Kilve and Ann baptised
1804 at Cutcombe, so it may be possible a Mary was born in the interim].
The 1841 census lists Joseph and his some of his children at Hawkington Farm:

Jonas Fish died at Cutcombe on 19 December 1868, aged 72 years. Letters of Administration [for effects under £600] were granted on 13 February 1869 "of the Personal estate and effects of Jonas Fish late of Hawkington in the Parish of Cutcombe in the County of Somerset Yeoman a Bachelor deceased who died 13 December 1868 at Hawkington aforesaid were granted at Taunton to Joseph Fish of Chipstable in the County aforesaid Yeoman the Brother and one of the Next of Kin of the said Deceased he having been first sworn."
The 1891 Census includes very few Fish or Perrett names in the Cutcombe area.
- Joseph Fish passed away
in March 1851, aged 80 years, as commemorated in an obituary as follows :
- Dunster Sudden
Death
- On Sunday morning
last Mr Joseph Fish of Hawkington Farm, Cutcombe, near this town, went
to Church a few minutes before divine service [?]was commenced. As he
was sitting in his pew he was seen to fall away; some persons ran to his
assistance, but before he could be removed he breathed his last. Deceased
was about 80 years of age, and was highly respected by all who knew him.
An inquest was held on the body before Mr MUNKTON on Tuesday last and
the jury returned a verdict, "Died by the visitation of God".
- Somerset
County Herald and Great Western Advertiser, Saturday 22 March 1851
- Emma Fish (Mary), born
April 1844 at Lime Kiln Lane in the parish of St Augustine, Bristol, was the
daughter of publican Robert Fish and his wife Elizabeth Williams. Emma's daughter
Gertie (Lillian Gertrude Dunscombe née Cockle) seems to have
had a strong emotional attachment to Coombe Farm: the suggestion is that Emma's
father Robert was Robert Fish (baptised October 1814, Cutcombe), the youngest
of Joseph Fish and Elizabeth Perrett's eleven children. For
further details of Emma, click
here.
- It is likely that Henry
Fish, who died at Bilbrooke ?SOM in 1931, was related to Joseph Fish and Elizabeth
Perrett. Henry was survived by four children, two of them possibly the Misses
Fish of Bilbrooke referred to in the 1951 letter from Amy
Elizabeth Crockford to her cousin Alice Hagley. For
further details regarding Henry, click
here.

and James Widlake (clerk). Joan, baptised at Cutcombe in May 1794, was the fifth
known child of JAMES CROCKFORD and his wife JOANY. George, born 1792 at Stogursey
SOM, was the eldest of eleven children of JOSEPH FISH and his wife ELIZABETH

- eYoB = estimated year

Census year).
Position and Marital Status are inferred only [not enumerated
in census]
The baptismal
register of 1819, 1821, 1824 and 1830 record that George was a farmer's
son employed in husbandry; from 1825 to 1828 and from 1832 to 1837 he was
described as a farmer of Cutcombe. At the time of Mary's birth in 1819 he
was living with his parents. The 1841 census shews George at Higher
House Farm, adjacent to his father Joseph's Hawkington Farm.
With George was Joan, aged 47, six daughters and two sons. Bernie Nicholson
noted (pers comm, 10 May 2002) that in 2001, Higher House Farm was still
a working farm, the farmer living in the original house; though the farm
appeared not as well cared for as Hawkington Farm, the stock looked fit
and healthy.
George Fish died of typhus fever on 28 December 1842, the day after his
fiftieth birthday, and was buried at Cutcombe; Grace Baker was present when
he died. The widowed Joany remarried on 18 January 1844, to James Pugsley,
a widowed neighbour at Cutcombe. There appears to have been no issue to
this marriage.For
further details, refer
to Crockford Lineage C-5.1.1.5.
- Margaret Ford (2000)
recalled that for many years there was a letter in the Family Bible
[?of George Fish born 1836] from George's Sister, Minnie, informing him
of the where-abouts of his Nephews. Sadly this letter, which was written
on 12 July 1889 went missing. It was believed that Minnie was
at one time a home science or cooking teacher in Somerset
The
names of the Nephews were Joe (in Portsmouth), George (the army in India)
and Henry and Geoffrey whose whereabouts I cannot remember (
the letter
was gone from the Bible at the time of my Aunt's death in 1989).
Either a Brother or Nephew imigrated to New Zealand. George's Daughters,
Teresa and Harriet, visited the New Zealand family, possibly in the 1920s.
- Colin
Fish of Melbourne (2001) wrote that he had researched the family of
George Fish and Joan Crockford, whose children Jane and George both emigrated
to Bathurst NSW.
1.1.2.1.2.1.1
Jane Fish (1827
c1906) m. George Thomas Jarrett (1832
1907)
- Jane Fish,
occasionally noted as Sarah Jane Fish, born April 1827 at
Cutcombe SOM, was the daughter of farmer GEORGE FISH and his wife JOAN(Y)
CROCKFORD. Aged 29, she married George Thomas Jarrett at Coalpit
Heath, Gloucestershire, ENG in May 1856. George Jarrett had been born in
Gloucestershire in February 1832, the son of THOMAS JARRETT and his wife
HESTER.
- George and Jane Jarrett
emigrated to New South Wales almost immediately after their wedding, arriving
in Sydney on 4 September 1856 aboard the Lloyds, by which date Jane's
father was deceased and her mother living at Cutcombe, and George's mother
was deceased and his father living at Frampton in Bristol. The emigration
records note that George was aged 25, a blacksmith from Bristol Gloucester,
while Jane was a cook aged 27 from Cutcombe Somerset; both were of the Church
of England and could read and write. Though George stated he had no relatives
already in Australia, Jane was noted as having a sister (unnamed) living
in the colony; this may have been Mary.
- In New South Wales,
George and Jane became parents of six children:
- GEORGE
THOMAS JARRETT (birth registered at Patrick's Plains in 1857; death registered at Dubbo in 1921; in 1882 married Bridget Mary Kelly
(died 1936) [both buried in old Dubbo Cemetery]),
- WILLIAM
EDWIN JARRETT [* rf Note below] (birth registered at Parramatta in 1859; death registered at Granville in 1943; marriage to Blanche Lovina Kable registered in West Macquarie district in 1888 (Blanche's birth to William and Ann Maria Kable registered at Bathurst in 1870, her death registered at Wollongong in 1945), six issue; settled at Port Kembla NSW),
- CHARLES
EDWARD JAMES JARRETT (born August 1861 at Durham Street, Bathurst, birth registered at Bathurst; died
August 1934 at Parkes Bowling Club; in June 1887 at the Wesleyan Church
in Parkes married Matilda Jenkins (born 1867, died 1907)),
- JOSEPH
CHARLES JARRETT (birth registered at Bathurst in 1863, death registered at Parkes in 1923),
- MARY ANN
JARRETT (born 1865 at Teapot Swamp, Bathurst, birth registered at Bathurst; died November 1937; in June
1881 married George Bailey [rf. Bailey
Rowe, 29sep2003]) and
- SARAH JANE
JARRETT (birth registered at Bathurst in 1867, died 1911; in 1883 married Henry Purcival).
- George was a carrier
in 1865, and received an old age pension of £19/10/0 per annum in
1901. In 1903 he was living at Coobang, near Parkes.
- The death of Jane Jarrett
née Fish, daughter of George and Joan, was registered at Parkes
in 1906. Jane's brother George owned a foundry in Bathurst; reportedly another
brother James who owned land at Bathurst (this is currently unsubstantiated).
- George Thomas Jarrett
died on Christmas Day 1907, aged 78 years; he was buried in Parkes Methodist
Cemetery. His occupation was given as blacksmith and he had been in Australia
53 years, and was survived by his children George T (aged 50 years), William
(48), Charles J (46), Mary A (42) and Sarah J (40).
-
*Note: prior to Easter 2011, this author erroneously had William serving in World War 1: that was a different William Edwin Jarretti: born in Christchurch, New Zealand; a bachelor farmer aged 28 years and 3 months, he enlisted in the 1st Light Horse Regiment in World War I on 10 March 1916 at Menangle Park (service number 2329) [enlistment Attestation Papers note his mother as Jane Whitaker, 70 Shield St. Flemington, Victoria: this was also the postal address noted on his Application to Enlist]; on enlistment he was noted as height 5' 4¾", weight 140lbs., chest 34"-37", fresh complexion, dark brown hair and a Presbyterian, William embarked the RMS Mooltan for Suez on 19 August 1916 and returned to Australia on 13 March 1919. 1.1.2.1.2.1.2
Emma Fish (1828…1918) m. William Nicholson (1817…1882)
- Emma Fish,
the sixth daughter of GEORGE FISH and his wife JOANY CROCKFORD, appears
to have left Cutcombe within a few years of her father's death in 1842.
At Bernecia, California USA on 30 January 1851, Emma married William Nicholson,
an Englishman born at Harrow on 17 December 1817, the fifth child to GEORGE
and LUCY NICHOLSON and baptised on 11 January 1818 at St Mary's, Harrow-on-the-Hill.
George may have been associated with the Load of Hay hotel (renamed
the Wheatsheaf in 1858) at Byron Hill, Harrow. A draper, it
is possible he went to California about the time of the Gold Rush. William
and Emma produced nine children; Roxeth, a hamlet and chapelry in the parish
of Harrow, was mentioned in the places of birth:
- WILLIAM
SHERIDAN NICHOLSON (born 21 January 1852, Bernicia, California USA),
- GEORGE
NICHOLSON (born 18 April 1854 at sea, on the English ship Jessie Byrnes
(captain Baker); married Rosa Emeline Cooper at Trinity Church, Napier NZ
on 28 February 1877, officiant Rev. G S Smally),
- CHARLES
NICHOLSON (born 3 December 1855, Bernicia),
- EMMA NICHOLSON
(born 26 January 1858, Mongonui, NZ),
- LOUISA
NICHOLSON (born 11 June 1860, Mongonui),
- OLIVER

- AMELIA
NICHOLSON (born 20 May 1871, Auckland, NZ) and
- ALICE NICHOLSON
(born 26 May 1873, Auckland).
- William and Emma emigrated
to New Zealand, to Mangonui in 1856 and later to Auckland where she survived
her husband and died on 8 August 1918 (he died 9 August 1882 at Auckland),
leaving eight children. Obituaries appeared as follows :
- Mrs Emma Nicholson
- The death of Mrs
Emma Nicholson widow of the late Mr William Nicholson, which occurred
yesterday at her residence Pitt St., removes yet another old colonist.
Mrs Nicholson arrived in New Zealand with her husband from California
62 years ago, and settled at [?]Mangonui where Mr Nicholson engaged
in farming. The family moved to Auckland 50 years ago, and Mrs Nicholson
resided in the house they originally occupied until her death at the
age of 89. She is survived by 8 children four sons and four daughters
23 grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren. Two daughters are
unmarried, the other two are Mrs H. Taylor of Wellington, and Mrs W.
D. Buttle of Mt. Eden. The sons are W. F. Nicholson of MANGAWHARE, KAIPARA;
Mr. Charles Nicholson of Newton, Mr. Oliver Nicholson of Auckland and
Mr. Alfred Nicholson of WANGANUI.
- New Zealand
Herald, 9 August 1918
- This lady arrived
here with her husband the late Mr William Nicholson from California
62 years ago, and first settled on a farm at MANGANUI. About 50 years

Bernie Nicholson (pers comm, 10 May 2002) notes that an obituary
for Oliver Nicholson in the Freemason's magazine says that Emma and William
met in England; Emma and William are buried in the Symond Street cemetery
in Auckland.

George Fish (c1836
1901) m1. Mary O'Riley (1835
1864), m2. Catherine
Mackel (c1843
1913)
- George Fish,
baptised January 1836 at Cutcombe SOM, was the youngest known child of farmer
GEORGE FISH and his wife JOAN(Y) CROCKFORD. A blacksmith aged 21 years,
George emigrated to New South Wales aboard the Zemindar, arriving
in Sydney on 23 August 1857, the ship's logs recording his native place
as Dunster and Gloucestershire, and his parents as George (deceased) and
Johanna (living in Somersetshire). Un-married, he was an adherent of the
Church of England and could read and write, and noted a sister Mrs
Jane Garratt living near the Hunter (on the NSW mid-north coast).
- George spent much of
his life at Bathurst NSW, setting up a blacksmith at the Village (Perthville).
George married Mary O'Riley at Sts Michael and John's Roman
Catholic church in Bathurst in August 1859, and by 1860 was able to purchase
a block of land on the corner of Bentwick and Russell Streets where he started
his Foundry, living in a house next to this in Bentwick Street. Mary bore
George two children:
- MARIA A
FISH (born 1860, possibly died young) and
- EMMA FISH
(born 1862; married Michael Maloney/Moloney at Bathurst in 1886; may
have moved to Balmain North in Sydney where was born George J Maloney (in
1890) and later to Paddington where were born Bartholomew Maloney (1892),
James T Maloney (1894), Mary A Maloney (1895), Thomas M Maloney (born and
died 1901) and Annie E Maloney (born 1902); the death of an Emma Mary Maloney,
daughter of George and Mary, was registered in Sydney in 1943).
- Mary Fish née
O'Riley, daughter of JOHN and BRIDGET, died in October 1864, apparently
in childbirth.
- George remarried in
August 1865 at Sts Michael and John's church, his second wife being Catherine
Mackel. George was identified as a widower blacksmith aged 28, born
in England of George Fish and Johanna Crockford; Catherine was noted as
a spinster servant aged 22, Irish-born of HUGH MACKEL and MARY CORRIGAN;
George and Catherine were residents of Bathurst. Catherine and her sister
Bridget Mackel (who married Patrick Larkin at Bathurst in 1864) had
come from Fermanagh as part of the famed government sponsored Female
Emigrant scheme; Catherine's son Joseph often talked of their passage
as dreadfully rough. A group of these Irish girls was sent to two hostels
in Bathurst, Catherine to the one at 96 Russell Street, many years later
to be the home of her son Joseph and his wife Elizabeth.
[Note: Mary Townsend eMailed [tnsd@bigpond.com, 26 February 2009] that she has a WebSite assembling Mackel family data: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mackells/. Caroline Nicholson, researching Catherine Mackel, lives in New Zealand and is descended from Emma Fish, daughter of George Fish and first wife Mary O'Riley.]
- George and Catherine's
marriage was very productive, with some twelve issue [note: the years noted
are years of registration; event years may differ slightly]:
- JOSEPH
FISH (born 1866, died 1952; married Elizabeth Cunningham (1863
1946)
in 1896; their son George Frederick Fish married Mary ?Delaney?; their son

and brother of Terry),

- [The 1937 obituary

viz: Joseph Fish (Bathurst), Emma (Mrs. Maloney, of Hornsby), Nance (Mrs.
Williams, of Cremorne), Alice (Mrs. Cannon, of Bulgandramine) and Misses
Theresa Fish (Peak Hill), and Rachel Fish (Melbourne).]
- Margaret Ford wrote
in November 2000:
- The four sons worked
with their father in what was to become a flourishing business, making
Farm Implements and Machinery, Coaches, Windmills and later Water Pumps.
A Stand was had at the Bathurst A. H. & P. Show since its inception,
right up until the Foundry closed in the late 1880s. George ensured
his family had a good education, the sons attending St Stanislaus' College
Bathurst after finishing their primary education. The younger sons went
through College before Joseph (as was often the case : George 1878-81,
John 1879-83, Hugh 1882-85 and Joseph 1885-90), who became the Manager
after his father's death in 1901. At one time George employed 125 men,
in the workshop and out on the farms, etc.
-
It was told
that George was the first person in Australia to manufacture the single
furrow mulboard plough. One is still in existence, and is the proud
possession of my brother Joseph Sullivan of Shingle Hut, Freemantle
Road, Bathurst.
-
The business
of G Fish & Sons passed on to Joseph's sons in the 1940s
Of Joseph's sons, George Frederick was the Manager until his death in
1980, when his son John left to establish his own business. Frederick's
eldest son Terence remained at the rear of the old workshop, concentrating
on the wholesaling and retailing of grain and stock feeds. Warwick Fish
joined his father Terry in the family business, followed by Kent in
1989. In 1999 a decision was made to move back into the larger sections
of the old premises and increase the range of products handled by T
Fish & Sons.
- The 1878-79 Post Office
Directory lists George Fish as an agricultural implement maker in Bettinek
Street, Bathurst, while the 1884-85 Sands Directory lists George Fish a
blacksmith. George Fish, son of George and Joan, died near Bathurst in November
1901, aged 64 years.
- An obituary appeared
in The Bathurst Times of Thursday 14 November 1901 :
- Mr George Fish
Senior
- It is with regret
we have to announce the death of Mr George Fish, the sad event occurring
this morning about 10 o'clock.
- For several months
past Mr. Fish had been feeling unwell, but stuck to his work until 5
weeks ago, when he was compelled to take to his bed. He never recovered,
despite the untiring efforts of medical skill and untiring nursing,
and passed away this morning. Deceased was a man who was greatly respected
by all who knew him, and was a native of Somersetshire England. He was
64 years of age, and came to this state in 1857 when he was engaged
with Messers Chapman Brothers of this town. In 1862 he commenced business
on his own account, making a reputation for ability and integrity that
may well be envied. Deceased leaves a widow, 4 sons and 6 daughters,
all of whom will have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. The
funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 3.30 o'clock.
- Following George's
death Catherine lived with her son Joseph, his wife and young family, until
her death in November 1913.
- [A Mary Fish married
a John Wilson at Bathurst in 1862. She may have been the sister of Jane
and George.]
- [Several other of the
Cutcombe Fish lineage emigrated to New Zealand, some of whom later emigrated
to Australia.]

1.1.2.1.2.3 Gregory Fish (1799…c1852-3) m. Harriett Ward (c1800…1871+)
Gregory Fish, born 28 June 1799 and baptised 16 July 1799 at Kilve, the son of JOSEPH FISH and ELIZABETH PERRETT, married Harriett Ward on 3 August 1823 in Bristol. Gregory and Harriett appear to have had at least five children:
- HARRIET FISH (born c1855 at Bristol St Thomas; married — Barton; widowed mother of Ada by 1851),
- ELIZABETH FISH (born c1830 at Bristol St James; death registered 4Q1887; married Thomas Thristle in 3Q1851 (marriage registered at Clifton gls) with eight known issue),
- MARY FISH (born c1833 at Bristol St James; alive in 1851) and
- JOSEPH FISH (born c1836 at Bristol; alive in 1897; became a chemist; married Ann Yates [the Yates family were Hoteliers in Hastings], three daughters and one son, Joseph William Perrett [“Will”]) and
- ALFRED FISH (born c1840 at Bristol St Philip and St Jacob; alive in 1851).
The Bristol's Lost Pubs WebSite shews following for the Bell of Gloucester Lane in the Old Market and St Jude's district:

Lesley Hayward née Yates-Fish, formerly Carter [, 23 jan2008] asked:
The Bell, Gloucester Lane, Bristol: I am trying to trace The Bell in Gloucester Lane Bristol. My Gt Gt Grandfather Gregory Fish was a maltster and brewer there from 1834-1852 when he died. His wife Harriet [née Ward] ran the place from 1853-1858 and then their brother? Joseph Fish seems to have taken over.
Gregory and Harriet's son Joseph Perrett Fish became a Chemist.
Can anyone tell me whether The Bell still exists and if not what happened to it?
Lesley, granddaaughter of Joseph William Perrett Fish and Ann Yates of Bristol and Hastings respectively, living near Monmouth, Herefordshire [“ashfish” on Rootsweb's Fish message board] noted [05aug2008]:
My ancestors on my father's side are descended from the Fish family who seemed to live in and around Stogursey, Somerset from about 1690 until the 1800s. I wold love to hear from anyone who knows anything about these people [family tree on genes reunited]. The name implies they were fishermen or fish sellers and Stogursey isn't far from the sea but Gregory Fish moved to Bristol to become a publican/Hotel Keeper with his wife and their son Joseph Perrett Fish became a Chemist [my gt grandfather]. Joseph married into the Yates family of Hastings [also Hoteliers].

1.1.2.1.2.5.1
Henry Fish (1842
1931) m. Letitia Shepherd (1844
192?)
Henry Fish
of Bilbrooke, born at Stogumber about 1842,
and baptised thereat in March 1842, was the son of farmer JOSEPH FISH and
MARRIANNE BREWER.
Henry's wife Letitia Shepherd was the daughter baptised at West
Quantoxhead in October 1844 to yeoman JAMES and PRISCILLA SHEPHERD; she predeceased
Henry who died in 1931 aged 89 years. Their 1881 census entry notes as "sister"
[to Henry] an Amelia Jane Shepherd Fish, aged 40 years: Amelia Jane Shepherd
was actually a sister to Letitia, baptised at West Quantoxhead on 21 July
1840. Letitia's other siblings included Mary Ann Shepherd (baptised
at West Quantoxhead on 14 September 1841) and Sarah Shepherd (baptised
at West Quantoxhead on 26 March 1843).
Henry and Letitia had at least five children:
- FLORENCE MARY FISH
(born circa 1880, Litlestock SOM; married Thomas Barrington Perrett),
- JOSEPH SHEPHERD FISH
(born circa 1881; of Cross Farm, Over Stowey in 1931; died 7 February
1948; married Florence Jane Duckham [marriage registered at Taunton DEV
in second quarter of 1912]),
- ELLA LETITIA FISH (born
1882; died 11 February 1952),
- HELEN A FISH (born
circa 1887) and
- MARY FISH (born circa
1888; died 20 February 19?? [post 1930]).

Letitia died March 192?. Henry Fish, retired farmer, apparently died in August
1931, aged 89 years. It is believed that Ella and Mary were the Misses Fish
of Bilbrooke referred to in Amy Crockford's 1951 letter to Alice Hagley; Max
Dunscombe remembered them as elderly ladies whom he visited with his mother.
Henry directed his estate be disposed as follows :

I appoint my son

1.1.2.1.2.6 James Fish (1807…1871+) m1. Mary Parker (…); m2. Mary Thristle (…)
James Fish, baptised 23 June 1807 at Cutcombe, a son of JOSEPH FISH and ELIZABETH PERRETT, first married Mary Parker, 14 November 1836, Bristol, later married Mary Thristle, 15 March 1841, Bristol.
Thus it seems that James had at least three children:
- JAMES FISH (born circa 1838; died 1882; married Sarah; at least nine issue),
- MARY J FISH (born circa 1842) and
- JOSEPH FISH (born circa 1843; died 1881; married Julia; at least two issue).
James may have been at East Street in Bristol at the time of the 1841 census:

1.1.2.1.2.7 Ann Fish (1811…1880)
Ann Fish, born circa 1811 at Cutcombe, the daughter of JOSEPH FISH and ELIZABETH PERRETT, never married.
Ann was noted in the 1841 census as part of her widower father's family at Hawkington, Cutcombe, in the 1851 census in charge of Hawkington and in the 1871 census at Stogumber (on independent means, unmarried, 69) with her widower brother James (retired publican, 62) and neice Sara Ann Langdon (farmer's daughter, unmarried, 20). Perhaps Ann was the Ann Fish noted at Lower Hawk'ton in 1861 (though age noted as 55) with her brother Jonas.
The Will of Ann Fish "formerly of Cutcombe afterwards of Stogumber but late of Stogursey all in the County of Somerset Spinster who died 13 July 1880 at Stogursey was proved at Taunton by Joseph Fish of "The Sugar Loaf" Water-street in the City and County of Bristol Licensed Victualler the nephew one of the Executors" [proven 11 February 1881, Personal Estate under £300]..

1.1.2.1.2.8.1
Emma (Mary) Fish (1844
) m. Edwin Cockle (1842
)
Emma Fish
(Mary), born April 1844 at Lime Kiln Lane in the parish of St Augustine, Bristol,
was the daughter of publican ROBERT FISH and his wife ELIZABETH WILLIAMS;
Robert was probably Robert Fish (baptised October 1814, Cutcombe),
the youngest of Joseph Fish and Elizabeth Perrett's eleven children.
In May 1870 at St Clemment's parish church, Emma, a spinster aged 26 and resident
of St Augustine parish, married Edwin Cockle, bachelor cooper
aged 28, a resident of nearby St Clemment's parish Bristol. Edwin was the
son of cooper JOHN and MARY ANN COCKLE.
At least four children were born to Emma and Edwin:
- LILLIAN GERTRUDE COCKLE
"Gertie" (born c1874 in Bristol; married Matthew Dunscombe),
- EDWIN C COCKLE "Gertie"
(born c1875 in Bristol),
- MARGARET W COCKLE "Gertie"

Lillian Gertrude Cockle (c1874
) m. Matthew Ernest Dunscombe
Lillian Gertrude
Cockle (Gertie), daughter of EDWIN COCKLE and his wife
EMMA (Mary) FISH, married Matthew Ernest Dunscombe at Bristol
about October - December 1905. Matthew was one of four sons (and two daughters)
of MATTHEW WILLIAM DUNSCOMBE, master optician, who was born in Clifton, Bristol,
in 1841 and died 6 June 1918. Matthew Ernest Dunscombe's brothers included
E J Dunscombe and O W Dunscombe, and a sister was Adeliza
Dunscombe. Matthew and Gertie produced one son:
- MATTHEW EDWIN DUNSCOMBE
(Max) (married Eleanor Mary Owens).
Gertie seems to have maintained
a strong attachment to Coombe Farm, often taking her son Matthew there when
he was a child. Max was often at Coombe Farm visiting his Auntie Annie
(Annie Hagley, daughter of Mary (Polly) Crockford and Thomas Hagley; born
September 1870 and died March 1951).
[A William Dunscombe,
bachelor of Porlock parish, had married by banns Mary Baker, a spinster of
Cutcombe, at her parish church on 31 December 1830; the witnesses were William
Baker and Robert Baker.]

Matthew Edwin Dunscombe
(Max), son of MATTHEW ERNEST DUNSCOMBE and LILLIAN GERTRUDE COCKLE, married

In 1990 Max was the retired owner of an optical firm in Bristol. A display
of the Dunscombe optical collection is on view at the Science Museum in London.
1.1.2.2 Tacy Fish (c1749…1807) m. Silas Browning (…)
This section is based solelyon data from Orange Family WebSite on RootsWeb [accessed 10jun2011].
Tacy Fish, baptised at Stogursey baptised 15 May 1749, daughter of LEWIS FISH and his wife MARY CUNIBER, married Silas Browning at Stogursey on 25 November 1771. Silas was a son of JOHN BROWNING and ELIIZABETH BREWER. Silas and Tacy were the parents of:
- MARY BROWNING (born 1772 at Stogursey),
- WILLIAM CARPENTER BROWNING (born 1774 at Stogursey; married Dinah Haymond, 7 December 1796 at Bridgwater, ten known issue),
- ELIZABETH BROWNING (born 1776 at Stogursey; married John Nurton on 2 November 1796 at Stogursey),
- ROBERT BROWNING (born June 1780 at Stogursey; died before 1844; married Patience Weadon on 7 December 1808 in St Mary's, Bridgwater, two known issue; married Susannah Gibbs on 8 April 1805 at Stogursey, one known issue),
- GEORGE BROWNING (born 1782 at Stogursey; died before 1786),
- GEORGE BROWNING (born 1786 at Stogursey),
- ALEXANDER BROWNING (born 1789 at Stogursey; married Elizabeth Browning [born 1782 at Stogursey] on 6 Jananuary 1819 Stogursey, three known issue) and
- JOSEPH BROWNING (born 1792 at Stogursey; married Betty Browning, one known issue)..
2.
Mary Fish (c1803
) m Thomas Triggoll (c1802
1869)
Thomas Triggoll
married Mary Fish at Over Stowey SOM on 26 March 1828. Ann Triggol
married William Seally of Nether Stowey at Over Stowey on 5 November 1828.
Alexander [Conybeare] Fish, son of JOSEPH FISH and ELIZABETH PERRETT, married
Elizabeth Stone at Over Stowey on 14 June 1829.
It is very tempting to consider Mary Fish and Alexander Fish as siblings:
indeed, Joseph and Elizabeth Perrett did have a daughter Mary baptised at
Kilve in 1796.
Thomas and Mary had at least seven children:
- ELIZABETH TRIGGOLL
(born circa 1828, baptised 3 August 1828 at Over Stowey (father noted
as a labourer from Ely),
- GEORGE TRIGGOL (born
circa 1831, baptised 30 October 1831 at Stogursey (father noted as
a farmer from Monkton)),
- MARY ANN TRIGGOL (born
circa 1834, baptised 18 April 1834 at Stogursey (father noted as
a farmer from Idson or Itson),
- ELLEN JANE TRIGGOLL
(born circa 1836, baptised 31 October 1836 at Stogursey (father noted
as a farmer from Itson Farm in the parish of Stogursey),
- THOMAS TRIGGOLL (born/baptised
14 September 1839 at Williton SOM; married Emily Govett),
- JOHN TRIGGOLL (born
