)
- [This
lineage sourced from Martin Southwood's WebSite http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/wsomparreg/index.html]
Samuel Moor and Joan Howe were married at Kilton
SOM on 6 October 1711. They were the parents of at least six children:
- MARY MOOR (baptised 8
August 1712, Kilton; married Richard Stone of Cannington at Kilton on 22 April
1732; five known issue),
- JOAN MOOR (baptised
21 January 1714, Kilton; a Joan Moore married John Levishier at Kilton on

An Ann Moor (possibly a sister of Samuel) and William Williams, both of St Decumans, were married at Kilton on 17 May 1715..
- 3.
♦ Richard
Stone
(c1710
) and Mary Moor (c1712
)
- Richard Stone
of Cannington, born about 1710 in Somerset, married Mary Moor
of Kilton SOM at Kilton in April [or perhaps December] 1732. Mary, the daughter
of SAMUEL MOOR and JOAN HOWE, was baptised at Kilton on 8 August 1712. Richard
and Mary, at Cannington, were parents of:
- JOHN STONE
(baptised March 1733, died before 16 May 1764; perhaps married Sarah
Sellick (c1738
1770) with five issue),
- SAMUEL STONE
(baptised 1735; married Joan Mullens at Cannington in 1759, possibly nine
issue),
- THOMAS STONE
(baptised September 1737; married Jane Norman about 1769; one known daughter),
- ELIZABETH
STONE (baptised December 1739; married Thomas Tucker) and
- RICHARD STONE
(baptised October 1742; buried August 1781; married Sarah Sellick (c1756
),
two issue; later married Rebecca Diament).
- [Other Stone entries
are found in the Cannington parish registers (baptisms 1714-1770, marriages
1713-1754 and burials 1813-1848); contemporaries of Richard and Mary were
John Stone and Mary Light, who married on 19 May 1730 and bore seven children.]
- 3.1
John Stone (c1733
1764) m. Sarah Sellick (c1738
1770)
- John Stone,
son of RICHARD STONE and MARY MOOR, was baptised March 1733 at Cannington.
- Sarah Sellick
of Over Stowey SOM married a John Stone of Cannington in January 1758 at Over
Stowey, witnessed by Thomas Stone of Over Stowey. Sarah had been born about
1738 in Over Stowey. [This John Stone may have been John baptised March
1733, son of Richard Stone and Mary, or John son of John Stone and
Mary baptised February 1731 at Cannington.] John and Sarah had the following
children:
- MARY STONE
(baptised September 1757 in Cannington),
- JOHN STONE
(baptised November 1759 in Cannington, buried November 1760 in Cannington),
- SARAH STONE
(baptised September 1761 in Cannington),
- MAURICE STONE
(baptised February 1760 in Cannington),
- JOHN STONE
(baptised August 1764 in Cannington, the son of widow Sarah Stone; buried
April 1774 in Cannington).
- John Stone husband of
Sarah was buried in May 1764 in Cannington. Sarah Stone nee Sellick
was buried in December 1770 in Over Stowey.
Peter J. Stone of South Africa wrote
(28Apr2002):
- I believe the Thomas
STONE who witnessed the marriage of John and Sarah SELLICK was probably
John's brother. There was indeed a Thomas STONE in Over Stowey in 1858
(my 4th GG who signed the Parish Accounts in that year ) but I suspect
that it was not him who witnessed the marriage as he was able to sign
his name whilst the Thomas witness put a mark.
- I am related to
the Over Stowey SELLICK family descended from John SELLICK (alias Honiball)
and Mary WALFORD via their son Charles SELLECK and Rebecca CHOLSEY. Charles
had a brother William but there may have been other siblings including
the Sarah who married John STONE in 1758.

3.2
♦
Samuel Stone (1735
1780) m. Joan Mullens
(c1736/9
1810)
- Samuel Stone,
baptised 1735 at Cannington SOM, the son of RICHARD and MARY STONE, appears
to have married Joan Mullens [or Mullins] at Cannington in April
1759; Joan may have been the daughter of WILLIAM and MARY MULLENS,
baptised at Cannington in November 1736. Samuel and Joan were the parents
of:
- THOMAS STONE
(born circa 1761, buried 15 August 1762, Cannington),
- JANE STONE
(baptised 1763; appears to have married Joseph Norman in 1790 at Cannington),
- ELIZABETH
STONE (baptised 1765),
- DINAH STONE
(baptised 1767),
- SARAH STONE
(baptised 1767, appears to have died before 1769),
- SARAH STONE
(baptised 1769, appears to have died before 1779),
- MARTHA STONE
(baptised 1771; married Michael Perrot at Cannington in 1795),
- ANN STONE
(baptised 1777) and
- SARAH STONE
(baptised 1779).
[sources: - Paul Mansfield; Robert
Hayward]
- Samuel was buried on
30 July 1780 at Cannington, aged 45 years. Mary was buried on 25 November
1810 at Cannington, aged about 69 years.)
3.3
Thomas
Stone (1737
) m. Jane Norman (c1740
)
- Thomas Stone,
baptised September 1739 at Cannington, son of RICHARD STONE and his wife MARY
MOOR, married Jane Norman in Somerset about 1769; Joan had been
born circa 1740 in Somerset. They were the parents of:
- MARY STONE
(baptised May 1774,
Cannington; married Joseph Hunt about 1794, Somerset (Joseph
had been born about 1770 in Somerset)),
- ANN STONE (baptised January 1778, Cannington),
- THOMAS STONE (baptised August 1780, Cannington),
- SAMUEL STONE (baptised April 1783, Cannington; perhaps married Elizabeth Hurley at Cannington in December 1804),
- JOHN STONE (baptised April 1787, Cannington) and
- JANE STONE (baptised November 1790)..
- 3.4
Elizabeth Stone (1739
) m. Thomas Tucker (c1735
)
- Elizabeth Stone
of Cannington, baptised December 1739 at Cannington, the daughter of RICHARD
STONE and his wife MARY MOOR, married Thomas Tucker of Otterhampton
SOM at Cannington in April 1760. Thomas had been born circa 1735 at Otterhampton.
3.5
Richard Stone (1742
1781) m1. Sarah Sellick (1756
)
- Richard Stone,
baptised October 1742 at Cannington, son of RICHARD STONE and his wife MARY
MOOR, married Sarah Sellick at Cannington in April 1776; Sarah
had been born circa 1756 in Fiddington Somerset. They were the parents of:
- MARY STONE
(of Fiddington, baptised January 1777, Cannington) and
- JOHN STONE
(baptised January 1779, Fiddington; married Anne Ames in March 1810 at Cannington
(Anne died before 1811, in Somerset); re-married in June at Fiddington to
Rebecca Diament (born about 1785 in Fiddington)).
- 4.
♦ Joseph
Norman (1766
1838) m. Jane Stone (1763
1840)
- Joseph Norman
married Jane Stone (?at Cannington?) in September 1790. Jane
was possibly the daughter baptised at Cannington in 1763 for SAMUEL and JOAN
STONE. Baptismal records indicate that Joseph and Jane were the parents of:
- JAMES NORMAN
(baptised 9 March 1794 at Cannington; married Maria Hurley (five, possibly
seven, known children)),
- SAMUEL NORMAN (baptised 23 October 1796 at Cannington),
- ROBERT NORMAN (baptised 23 June 1799 at Cannington; perhaps the infant buried at Cannington on 3 December 1803; perhaps married Elizabeth Burcher at Cannington 8 February 1827; indications are that he married (Mary) and was the innkeeper at Crowcombe in the 1830s),
- WILLIAM NORMAN (baptised 22 April 1803 at Cannington),
- JANE NORMAN (baptised 8 April 1806 at Cannington; perhaps married William House at Cannington 27 February 1835).
- The burial of Joseph
Norman, aged 72 years, took place at Cannington on 6 July 1838; Jane Norman
nee Stone aged 77 years was buried at Cannington on 5 June 1840. These
ages imply that Joseph was born circa 1766 and Jane circa 1763.
4.1
♦
James Norman (1794
1872) m. Maria Hurley
(1797
1868)
- The Cannington Parish
Registers record the marriage of James Norman and Maria
Hurley in March 1821 ?at West Quantoxhead, Somerset. James had been
baptised in 9 March 1794 at Cannington SOM, the son of JOSEPH NORMAN and JANE
STONE. It seems that Maria was baptised in 1797 (?at Cannington?), the daughter
of JOHN HURDLE (?) and SARA TUCKER, who had married (?at Cannington?) in April
1795.
James Norman, a bailiff
of Cutcombe, and his wife Maria ?Jane [Hurley], appear to have been
the parents of:
- JAMES NORMAN
(born 7 April 1821, Winsford SOM, died 1889; married Joan (seven known children)),
- JOHN NORMAN
(born c1825, Winsford; in 1851 with his younger brother James and cousin Robert as clerks living at 16 South Wharf Road, Paddington, London),
- CHARLOTTE
NORMAN (baptised 1 February 1824, Cannington SOM, in 1881 living with her younger
brother James at Rawleigh Cottage, Cutcombe, and in 1891 with James at Watercombe,
Cutcombe; still alive in 1901),
- JANE NORMAN
(baptised February 1826, Cutcombe , buried August 1838, Cutcombe, aged 12
years),
- WILLIAM NORMAN
(born 26 August 1827 at Raleigh Cottage, Cutcombe; baptised 10 September 1827, Cutcombe; died 8 February 1892 at Folkestone, Kent, and was buried there; a 'Member of Lincoln's Inn and Land Agent of London),
- MARY ANN
NORMAN (baptised 1829, Cutcombe, died 1887; married William
Crockford at Cutcombe in 1854, four children),
- SARAH ANN
NORMAN (perhaps born at Winsford, baptised 26 December 1831, Cutcombe, died
1893, Cutcombe; married Gregory
Crockford (younger brother of William above) at Cutcombe in 1861, four
children),
- EMMA NORMAN
(baptised May 1834, Cutcombe, buried April 1877 at Cutcombe, aged 42 years;
?never married; resided Raleigh Cottage in 1877),
- JAMES NORMAN
(baptised 14 February 1836, Cutcombe, in 1881 living with his sister Charlotte
at Rawleigh Cottage, Cutcombe [both un-married] and in 1891 at Watercombe,
Cutcombe),
- MARIA JANE
NORMAN (baptised August 1838, Cutcombe ; in 1868 married James Sage at Cutcombe)
and
- JOSEPH NORMAN
(baptised December 1841, Cutcombe).
- Prior to Easter 2010 this author had postulated that James and Robert Norman (born c1821 and c1825 respectively at Winsford som) may have been the early issue of Cannington-born James Norman (born 1794), bailiff of Cutcombe, and his wife Maria ?Jane Hurley. A memorial tablet to William Norman as the 'second son of James Norman' in the Cutcombe parish church clearly indicates that postulate was erroneous; consequently James (c1821) and Robert are now considered amongst other Norman families at Winsford 5km SSW of Cutcombe.
It appears that James
and Maria went to Rayleigh Cottage at Cutcombe circa 1826-32; the 1841
census has the following entries:

- HARRIETT NORMAN (baptised
1816 at Cutcombe).
The relationship between
Thomas and James (born c1800) is unclear.

- The 1871 Census lists
James Norman, a farmer of 400 acres and employer of three men and two boys,
as married head of the household at "Higher House" Cutcombe SOM.
James, aged 50 and born at Winsford, may have been a brother of Sarah Ann
and a witness at her wedding. With James lived his wife, Joan (49, born at
Exton), their unmarried children Mary (25), Ann (23), Maria (21), John (16),
Martha (13), George (10), and Eva (8 years) and indoors farm servants William
Tudball (21), and Henry Quartley (14), and agricultural labourer Alexander
Skinner (27, born at Minehead). All the above were born at Cutcombe except
where otherwise noted.
The 1881 Census has James Norman (60) still at "Higher House", now
farming 375 acres and employing two men sand one boy. His wife Joan (59) and
unmarried children John (26), George (20) and Eva (17), Cutcombe-born grand-daughter
Elizabeth Searle aged 4 years, and farm servant Albert ?L. Court (aged 12,
born Winsford) were co-resident.
The death of a James Norman, aged 69 years, was registered in the Williton
district in the December quarter of 1889. To date the family has not been
located in the 1891 census, but the 1901 census shews Joan a widow aged 79
years at the home of her son John at Gupworthy, Withiel Florey, Somerset.
In the 1901 census
Louisa was at her brother John at Gupworthy in Withiel Florey in Somerset:

The
1881 census shows that at "Codsin", near to "Higher House"
occupied by James Norman, lived two families. One was that of agricultural labourer
Robert Norman, aged 56, living with his wife Jane, aged 54, both born at Winsford,
and unmarried daughter Martha, aged 27 and born at South Molton. The other family
at "Codsin" was that of James Mills (28), his wife Lucy (22) and their
son Thomas (1).
The 1891 census has the following entries

A Martha Norman married William Tudball at Winsford on 20 April 1847 ; perhaps
she was a sister of Robert and/or James and/or Sarah Ann. Perhaps the 21 year
old Cutcombe-born William Tudball (or Ludball), a farm servant at "Higher
House" Cutcombe in 1871, was a son of William Tudball and Martha Norman.
James Tudball, a literate Winsford-born Wesleyan labourer aged 24, and his
wife, Carhampton born Hannah Chubb (married at nearby Dunster in 1852), sailed
from Deptford on 21 December
1852 aboard the Monteagle, the emigrants arriving in Melbourne VIC
on 12 April 1853.
The death of a Robert Norman aged 73 years was registered in the Williton
district in the September quarter of 1896 - perhaps he was the Robert
discussed above.

4.1.3
♦ Sarah
Ann Norman (1831
1893) m. Gregory Crockford (1828
1900)
- Sarah Ann Norman,
born c1831 at Winsford SOM, was the daughter of bailiff JAMES NORMAN. At Cutcombe
on 26 November 1861 Sarah, aged 29, married Gregory Crockford,
born 1828, the third son of farmer WILLIAM CROCKFORD (born at Cutcombe on
Christmas Eve 1796) and JANE FISH (born c1801).
- Sarah and Gregory had
four known children, the younger three known to be alive in 1891. Sarah Ann
Crockford nee Norman died 12 March 1893 and was buried in the churchyard at
Cutcombe. Her age inscribed on the headstone was 63 years; this would yield
a birthyear (1829/30) different to that derived from the Censii and her marriage
certificate (1831/2), 1831 has been adopted throughout this text. Gregory
Crockford died at "Hawkington" Cutcombe on 2 January 1900, aged
70 years, and was buried with his wife. For
further details of their family see the Crockford files (Crockford
Lineage C-5.1.1.6.3).
4.1.4
James Norman (1836
1891+)
- James Norman,
born c1836 at Cutcombe SOM, was a son of bailiff JAMES NORMAN. On Sunday 7
April 1861, when the census was taken, James was a game keeper living with
his sisters Charlott, Sarah Ann and Maria Jane and their parents at Rayleigh
Cottage, Cutcombe. In the 1871 census, James was still living at Rayleigh
Cottage, with his sisters Charlotte and Emma and their widower father James.
- The 1881 census shews
him still at Rawleigh, with his sister Charlott:

- Spinster Maria
Jane Norman, baptised August 1838 at Cutcombe, daughter of bailiff
JAMES NORMAN, married James Sage at Cutcombe in September 1868.
James, a bachelor farmer of Cutcombe, aged 32 years, was the son of farmer
JAMES and MARY SAGE [in the 1851 census, this couple are listed at North Langham,
Cutcombe; James, born at Wooton Courtney, was aged 54 years, a farmer of 160
acres, and Mary, born at Lubborough, aged 53 years; their son James was with
them]. Witnesses at the wedding were Emma Norman and John Norman.
- Children of James and

4.2 Samuel Norman (1797…1861+) m. Sarah — (c1796…1871+)
It may be that Samuel Norman, baptised on 23 October 1796 at Cannington, a son of JOSEPH NORMAN (born circa 1766) and JANE STONE (born circa 1763), married Sarah — and remained in the Cannington region. It seems that this Sarah was born circa at North Petherton som. Samuel, a labourer, was by Sarah the father of (at least, according to 1841 census):
- HENRY NORMAN (baptised 19 June 1825 at Cannington),
- EMMA NORMAN (baptised 27 December 1828 at Cannington),
- SAMUEL NORMAN (baptised 1 May 1831 at Cannington),
- EDWIN NORMAN (baptised 9 June 1833 at Cannington),
- JESSE NORMAN (baptised 17 January 1836 at Cannington) and
- AMOS NORMAN (baptised 17 March 1839 at Cannington).
The 1841 census shews Samuel and Sarah at Cannington, following an entry for a James and Mary Norman:
(The marriage of Joseph Norman
and Florence Lucy O Aston was registered in the December quarter
of 1883 at St George, Hanover Square, London, Surrey.

4.3 Robert Norman (1799…1851+) m. Mary — (…1851+)
It appears that Robert Norman, baptised on 23 June 1799 at Cannington, a son of JOSEPH NORMAN (born circa 1766) and JANE STONE (born circa 1763), moved west to Crowcombe som [his older brother James went further, to Cutcombe — rf Section 4.1 above] and that he married Mary —. It seems that Mary was born circa 1799 at Charlynch (about 2km SW from Cannington). Robert was noted as an innkeeper at Crowcombe in 1834, 1834 and 1837. He and Mary were the parents of (at least):
- CAROLINE NORMAN (baptised 26 February 1832 at Crowcombe),
- ROBERT NORMAN (baptised 6 August 1834 at Crowcombe),
- EDWIN NORMAN (baptised 19 February 1837 at Crowcombe) and
- J M NORMAN (baptised 26 February 1832 at Crowcombe).
Robert (born 1799) and Mary had moved to Nether Stowey by the time the 1851 census was taken [30 March 1851] (son Robert was a clerk at Paddington, London, with his older cousins John and William):

5 The Winsford Normans
In October 2011 this author became aware of the research publication Norman Genealogy – Ancestors and Descendants of George Norman, I and Martha Melhuish Norman, Somerset, England with Descendant and Collateral Familes of America by William Ernest Norman (1976, 266pp) which, based on the earier research by his grandfather, traced his Norman ancestory back through Halse and Winsford in Somerset. A summary follows in this section. This obviously has the potential to absorb, and order, many of the subsections below. Winsford is 4.25kn SSW of Cutcombe.
In his work Norman states (p2) “The early Normans are reported to have planted a Norman Colony at Witheridge, County Somerset, England at the time of the Norman Conquest. While our research has traced our antecedents back to 1520, word has been handed down that they were descended from William the Conqueror, and thence back to Richard I, Duke of Normandy 942-996, (son of William Longsword; grandson of Rolf and so on --- )n
6. John Norman

) m. Frances (c1845
)
- Butcher John Norman, born about 1847 at North
Molton in Devon, married Frances , born circa 1845 at

Related Families:
An examination of Winsford
church records reveals several Norman families in this period. Baker, Ridler,
Vacary/Vikery, Clatworthy and Widlake families are also present.
One of the earlier discernible
baptisms in the Winsford parish registers is to John ?Norman and his wife
(name obscured), for:
- GRACE NORMAN (baptised
1758).
To William Norman and
his wife Ann(e) were registered the baptisms of:
- GRACE NORMAN (baptised
1759) and
- WILLIAM NORMAN (baptised
1761).
Elizabeth Norman, her
husbands name too badly smudged to read in the parish register, bore:
- ELIZABETH NORMAN (baptised
1765).
Signing his mark in the
parish register at Winsford on 25 March 1764, singleman Daniel Norman married
spinster Anstas Mary Follet. Both were of that parish, and the marriage before
vicar William Laycon was witnessed by Thomas Follett and James Norman. Though
the parish records prior to 1788 are almost illegible, the following baptisms
are discernible:
- THOMAS NORMAN (baptised
1765),
- DANIEL NORMAN (baptised
mid-1769) and
- HUGH NORMAN (baptised
1771).
On 28 March 1797, Hugh
Norman, now of the parish of Exton, married Ann Norman of Winsford, by banns.
The witnesses were John Brien and Thomas Norman, and the celebrant Thomas
Bealy. Children of Hugh and Ann, baptised at Winsford, included:
- JAMES NORMAN (baptised
1797),
- JANE NORMAN (baptised
1799),
- THOMAS NORMAN (baptised
1804),
- DANIEL NORMAN (baptised
1806) and
- ANN NORMAN (baptised
1814).
Anns 1814 baptism
followed the introduction of a new format for the church records, which had
for baptisms had previously been more of a notebook. Thomas Baely, the vicar,
noted in the register that Hugh was a labourer of Winsford.
John Norman and his wife
Mary were the parents of:
- SARAH NORMAN (baptised
1766).
James Norman and his wife
Jane were the parents of:
- SARAH NORMAN (baptised
1773) and
- illegible NORMAN
(baptised 1775).
William Laycon officiated
at the wedding by banns of widower Robert Norman and spinster Sarah Melhuish
in their parish church at Winsford on 27 September 1774 before witnesses Simon
Wilcox and James Norman. The Winsford records (where legible at this time) reveal
no childrens baptisms to this couple.
George Norman and his wife
Martha were the parents of:
- JOHN NORMAN (baptised
1780),
- ROBERT NORMAN (baptised
1801) and
- JANE NORMAN (baptised
1803).
John Norman, sojourner of
Winsford, married spinster Mary Clatworthy of that parish thereat on 3 April
1809. The marriage (by banns), performed by vicar Thomas Bealy, was witnessed
by George Norman. John and Mary appear to have been the parents of:
- MARTHA NORMAN (baptised
1810),
- MARY NORMAN (baptised
1814),
- JOHN NORMAN (baptised
1817),
- JOHN NORMAN (sic)
(baptised 1821; probably the John Norman who married Mary Ann Hooper [see
Section),
- ROBERT NORMAN (baptised
1824),
- THOMAS NORMAN (baptised
1826) and
- HENRY NORMAN (baptised
1829).
For the baptisms from
1814, the vicar noted John Norman to be a farmer of Winsford (in 1826 at Higher
Lea). Bennett Michele replaced Thomas Bealy as vicar about 1825.
