John and Dorothea Betty remained in the Enniskillen area after several of their children had emigrated to Australia, Canada or the United States of America. John McGregor Beattie of Kinine, aged 55 years, was buried in the Magheracross graveyard on 16 December 1858.
[Miscellaneous Notes:
¨ Some confusion exists as to whether Mary Jane/Ann and Eliza Jane were the same person.
¨ Maria Beatty or Beattie of nearby Killimitten in 1893 sent a photograph (of herself) to Andrew McGregor Beattie, then in New South Wales, inscribed "Uncle Andrew, Your Loving Niece, Maria Beatty, Killimitten"; it is not yet clear whose child she was.
¨ Margaret Dorothy Forster née Beatty (see Section 7 on page 52) was also related, though the relationship is still not understood.]
Spinster Rebecca Beatty of Kinine, Kilskeery, Tyrone, and bachelor David Christy of Mullaghduff, Fintona, were married by Licence by A H Irvive at Kilskeery CoI on 12 November 1844, as witnessed by Gerard(?) Irvine & Robert Christy(?). From stated relationships of her children to other children of JOHN McGREGOR BEATTY and his wife DOROTHEA [BETTY née BETTY], Rebecca was included in the latter’s family. The known issue of Rebecca were:
On 30 August 1879 when Eliza J Beaty paid a deposit in NSW of £2 each for the passage of Andrew McBeatty (24 [Andrew McGregor Beatty, her brother], a farmer) and Lucinda Christie (16, a housekeeper), she notied for both their 'address' as 'c/o David Christy, Scrissa [possibly Screggagh?], Fintona, Co Tyrone' . If David was Lucinda's father, it indicates that he was believed alive in 1879.
John Rowland Christy, aged 24, from Fenton TYR, died on 15 September 1881 at Oberon. His headstone was erected by Jeremiah Wilson (husband of John's aunt Lucinda née Beatty) who was also the informant for John's death certificate, and described himself as John's "uncle" residing at Glyndwr, Oberon. John was noted as a farmer aged 23, the son of farmer DAVID CHRISTY and REBECCA BEATTY, born in Ireland and in New South Wales for only fourteen months [this would date his arrival in the colony to July 1880]. John death was certified by Dr John Eaton, brother-in-law of Sarah Eaton née Beatty. The funeral was officiated by J R Read of the Church of England, and the burial by undertaker John Graham was witnessed by Frederick John Wilson and Andrew [McG] Beattie. John had not married.
Lucinda Christy, a daughter of farmer DAVID and REBECCA CHRISTY of Killymitten, was born on 26 December 1861 and baptised by Henry A. Burke on 27 February 1862 at Magheracross CoI, a (Killymittan?).
"Aunt Eliz J Beatty"
of Sydney is noted as a "relation in the Colony" to Lucinda
Christy, 17, a farm servant born in
Co Tyrone, who died in a Sydney hospital on 17 September 1880. Eliza had paid
a deposit in NSW for Lucinda Christy's emigration on 30 August 1879. Lucinda
had taken ill while emigrating aboard the Peterborough on the same voyage
as her uncle Andrew McGregor Beattie and his nephew James John Henderson. Lucinda died ten
days after reaching Sydney. There were no other Christys aboard the Peterborough.
The NSW death index lists Lucinda Christie's parents as DANIEL and REBECCA .
[The NSW death index also lists the 1881 death of a Margaret Christie, lost
in a river, and whose father was 'Bailey' : was she born Margaret Bailey, and
was she related to the Christies mentioned before, or to Matilda Bailey wife
of Andrew McGregor Beattie?]
Sarah Betty, born circa 1830, Tyrone/Fermanagh, was baptised 13 March 1830 at Magheracross, Fermanagh, her parents noted as JOHN [McGREGOR BETTY] and DOROTHEA [BETTY née BETTY] of Bigh [Beagh?, a townland in Magheracross parish, Fermanagh]. Sarah Betty, 25, spinster of Canine, married Robert Coleman Eaton, 30, bachelor farmer of Carron at Kilskeery on 27 October 1857. When Sarah [Beatty] was born, circa 1830-1832, her father's residence was recorded as Bigh, which was "1 mile of Killymitten" . Robert, son of JOSEPH EATON and his wife REBECCA BRIEN of Carran [a townland in Kilskeery parish, Tyrone], had been baptised at Kilskeery CoI parish church on 22 September 1818. Robert and Sarah Eaton emigrated to Australia, arriving in Port Phillip in February 1858 aboard the Shooting Star, apparently proceeding later that year to New South Wales. Robert and Sarah had seven children. Robert died 3 January 1898 at Oberon. Sarah died 30 March 1904 at "Apple Grove", Fish River Creek near Oberon NSW. [For further details of this family see the Eaton file.]
Roland Betty, baptised 31 July 1835 at Magheracross, Fermanagh, was a son of JOHN and DOROTHEA of Bigh [Beagh?]). It is possible that he was the Roland Betty of Killymitten who was buried at Magheracross on 1 August 1836.
Dorothy Betty
(Dorathey in the marriage index), 22, spinster of Kinine, daughter of JOHN McGREGOR BETTY and his wife DOROTHEA [née BETTY], married John
Robert Henderson (born February 1835) on 9 March 1858, the marriage
being registered in the district of Lowtherstown (Irvinestown). The couple
continued in Ireland until their deaths, but all their children who survived
infancy emigrated, mostly to America. John and his brother Jack had property,
possibly on a 99 year lease, side by side near Enniskillen. John's property
was "Loughterush", about 1km NW of Kilskerry Bridge. The Hendersons
seemed to have been well off during their child-rearing days.
Dorothy died on the property during 1912 , and John died in 1913.
[For
more details of this family, refer to the Henderson
file].
Mary Jane Betty was born 24 February 1839 and baptised 24 March 1839 at Magheracross, Fermanagh, the fourth known child of JOHN McGREGOR BETTY and his wife DOROTHEA [née BETTY]. John and Dorothera at the time stated their residence as Killymitten.
According to her death
certificate, Lucinda Betty, daughter of JOHN McGREGOR BETTY and his wife DOROTHEA [née BETTY], emigrated to Australia about 1868
when she was 24 years old. Lucinda's brother-in-law, Robert Coleman Eaton,
paid a deposit of £3 for her immigration on 8 October 1862 (Robert had
been resident in the colony with his wife Sarah and family since 1858). John
Fleming, a neighbour of Robert in both Ireland and NSW, paid deposits the
same day for the immigration of Mary, Anthony, John and Robert Edgar , who
duly arrived aboard the John Temperley on 1 August 1863, though not
with neighbour Lucinda. Lucinda's deposit was refunded on 15 October 1863
following an application by Robert . [John Fleming first worked for the Whalans
at Gingkin prior to selecting land at Fish River Creek .]
Lucinda married Jeremiah Wilson (also of Enniskillen stock)
at O'Connell near Oberon NSW on 10 January 1868. Jeremiah was born in October
1839, the son of farmer and grazier WILLIAM WILSON and his wife REBECCA LIDDLE.
For much of his married life, Jeremiah was Keeper at the newly discovered
Fish River Caves, now known as Jenolan Caves. On 18 March 1879, Jeremiah wrote
from his home, "Lucindale" on Fish River Creek, to the Minister
of Lands, concerning the discovery of the Imperial Cave. One small cave within
the Chifley Cave system is called the Lucinda Cave, named after his wife.
Jeremiah and Lucinda had eight children:
Jeremiah died on 3 November
1907 at Woollahra NSW. Lucinda lived with her daughter Maggie Cummings in ?Cook
Road, Centennial Park, Sydney until she died on 5 March 1920.
[Further
details of this family are included in the Wilson
file]
John Roland Betty was born 6 April 1843 and baptised 6 August 1843 by A H Irvine at Kilskeery CoI tyr, parents noted as JOHN [JOHN McGREGOR BETTY] (farmer) and DOLLY [DOROTHEA BETTY née BETTY] of Kinine. It seems that he married English-born Sarah — in the late 1860s, as there were several births registered to this couple, resident at Killymittan:
John Roland Beatty and his wife Sarah (born 1843) was listed in the June 1911 Irish Census; when his son Robert Beatty arrived in New York in October 1912 he noted "Mrs Sarah Beatty, Carramitten [Killymitten – ed.], Ballinamallard" as his nearest relative in his home country: this suggests that his father was by then deceased.
Alexander Henderson, writing to George Rowland Bailey Beattie in 1931, said that John Roland Beatty had four sons "some living in New York and some a short distance out". It appears that this did not include John Roland Beatty born 1843, but his sons Andrew McGregor Beatty (stayed in the USA and lived past 1951), John Roland Beatty (born 1879, repatriated in 1835), Guy Beatty (died in Connecticut in 1938) and either Thomas James Beatty (who repatriated between 1930 and 1933) or Robert W Beatty.
Anne Jane Beatty, born 1871 and baptised 17 December 1871 in Fermanagh, was the first born of nine children to JOHN ROLAND BEATTY and his wife SARAH. In 1897 Annie J Beatty, 26, married William H Veal in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. William, an English-Canadian born in 1857, had at least two children by a previous relationship. According to the June 1900 US census, William and Annie were the parents of four children [perhaps this was the total of William's children, incorrectly entered in census – ed.] including:
Anne apparently died in childbirth, presumably between June 1900 and July 1904.
[A Connecticut-bound Irish servant named Annie J Beatty, 24, departed Londonderry travelling 2nd class aboard the Furnessia and arrived in New York as a 'protracted sojourner' on 3 December 1895].
Lucinda Beatty, born 1872 in Fermanagh, was the second of nine children of JOHN ROLAND BEATTY and his wife SARAH. Lucinda apparently never married. She was burnt to death in London, perhaps attending a ball, when her dress caught fire, probably in her mid-20s.
Andrew McGregor Beatty, born October 1874 in Fermanagh, was the third of nine children born to JOHN ROLAND BEATTY and his wife SARAH. Andrew lived longer than his siblings. Family lore says that Andrew went to America while fairly young and stayed there. The 1900 US census lists an Andrew Beatty, born in October 1874 of Irish stock, who emigrated to America in 1890, as a single grocer's clerk in Hancock Street, Brooklyn.
William Henry Beatty, born 1877 in Fermanagh, was the fourth JOHN ROLAND and SARAH BEATTY's of nine children. William emigrated to the United States but later repatriated.
Single male British national motor-man William Beatty, aged 32 years from Ireland, departed Londonderry on 29 January 1910 aboard the SS Caledonia and arrived in New York on 7 February 1910. His nearest relative in Ireland was his father John R Beatty of Killymitten, Ballinamallard. The manifest notes that William paid the fare himself, arrived steerage with $40; he had been resident before in America 1899 to 1909, last residing at 88 Dean Street, Brooklyn, was neither a polygamist nor an anarchist, was in good health and not deformed, was 5'10”, fair complexion, brown hair and grey eyes.
The Anchor Line's SS Anchoria, sailing from Londonderry on 3 September 1899 and arriving in New York on 13 September, had brought Irish national William Beatty, single farming male aged 21 years from Fermanagh, Ireland; he had a ticket for travel to Brooklyn, New York, and appears to be destined for Proudential Insurance Co. [sic], 404 5 Avenue; he had not previously been in the US. It is likely this was William Henry Beatty from Ballinamallard. Another William Beatty had arrived on the Anchoria from 'Molville' {Moville] in 1896.
It was William who took his young nephew Johnny Veal from New York to Northern Ireland aboard the Laurentia; arriving at Londonderry 3 July 1904, after Johnny's mother Anne had died in childbirth.
William's death on 10 May 1947 is noted on the Beatty gravestone in Craghan Cemetery, Ballinamallard FER.
.John Roland Beatty, born 6 November 1879 in Fermanagh, was the fifth of the nine children of JOHN ROLAND and SARAH BEATTY. John emigrated to the United States in 1899 but later repatriated. A publican in Ballinamallard, John married Margaret J Robinson from Magheracross about 1909, their union producing three daughters and one son, all born in Connecticut USA:
John Roland Beatty is listed, noting his full birthdate, in US WW1 Draft No 4 as a resident of Fairfield CT.
The 1910 US census [taken 13-14 May] shews John and Maggie Beatty, married less than a year, and his brother Guy at Ridgefield Road, Ridgefield township, Fairfield County, Connecticut:
Name Pos Age Immig/Nat B'Place Literacy Occupation
Beatty, John R Head 29 1899 R&W Farmer
Beatty, Maggie G Wife 19 1909 R&W
Beatty, Guy Bro 23 1908 R&W Farmer
The 1920 US census [taken 12 January] shews John Beatty and his family at Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut:
Name Pos Age Immig/Nat B'Place Literacy Occupation
Beatty, John R Head 40 1899/1911 R&W dairy farmer
Beatty, Maggie J Wife 29 1909/1911 R&W
Beatty, Lucinda Dau 9 Connecticut
Beatty, Anna Dau 7 Connecticut
Beatty, Roland Dau 5 Connecticut
Beatty, Adaline Dau 38/12 Connecticut
The 1930 US census [taken 26 April] shews John R Beatty at Great Plain, Danbury township in Fairfield County, Connecticut, that he was married (at age 29, thus circa 1909) and had immigrated to the U.S. in 1899:
Name Pos Age Immig/Nat B'Place Literacy Occupation
Beatty, John R Head 50 1899/1911 R&W dairy farmer
The rest of the family was in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, where Margaret said she was married (at age 24, thus circa 1913) and had immigrated to the U.S. In 1908 or 1909.
Beatty, Magart Head 40 1909/1911 R&W
Beatty, Lusinda Dau 19 Connecticut
Beatty, Anna Dau 17 Connecticut Stenographer (office)
Beatty, Rolland Son 15 Connecticut Book-keeper (insurance)
Beatty, Adaline Dau 14 Connecticut Messenger (newspaper)
John and his wife separated. It seems that John, farmer aged 51, arrived in Londonderry on 18 May 1931 aboard the Anchor Line's SS Transylvania, ex New York, bound for Ballinamallard, and again when aged 52, arriving in Moville in December 1933 aboard the Anchor Line's SS Caledonia, ex New York, also for Ballinamallard. John Roland Beatty, divorced male aged 54 years, returned to North Street, Litchfield, Connecticut aboard the Caledonia, ex Belfast on 18 July 1934 and arriving in New York on 26 July 1834. He was travelling on U.S. P/P No. 359866, issued in Connecticut on 10 April 1931.
John then repatriated (perhaps he was the 55-year old US-citizen farmer John Beatty who landed in Belfast 8 September 1935 aboard the Anchor Line's SS California, ex New York, bound for Ballinamallard) and remarried at Kilskeery in 1936 to Emily May Cluff, with issue:
John Roland Beatty died in Fermanagh on 8 September 1942..
Guy Beatty, born 1881 in Fermanagh, was the sixth child of JOHN ROLAND and SARAH BEATTY. Guy emigrated to the United States aboard the SS Astoria, which departed Londonderry on 28 September 1907 and arrived in New York on 11 October. In the Astoria's Alien Manifest, Guy noted “JOHN BEATTY of Ballinamallard” as his nearest relative in his native place [this would have been his father]; aged 24 years and engaged in farming, single, literate Irish-born British citizen from Fermanagh, bound for Danbury, Connecticut. He had not been to the United States before, paid his own fare and arrived with $10; he intended to join his “brother John Beatty, c/o James Chambers” [viz, his brother John was already in the USA (at Danbury)]; he was neither a polygamist nor an anarchist; he was in good health, 5'9”, of fair complexion, fair hair and grey eyes but no distinguishing marks, and gave his birthplace as Fermanagh, Ireland.
The Census of 13-14 May 1910 shews Guy with his brother John and sister-in-law Maggie Beatty at Ridgefield Road, Ridgefield township, Fairfield County, Connecticut.
The Danbury (1918) Directory has entries (p76)
Beatty Guy rem to New Haven [rem - thought to mean “removed to”]

Thomas James Beatty, born 1884 in Fermanagh, was the eighth of nine children of JOHN ROLAND and SARAH BEATTY. Family lore has Thomas emigrating to the United States on 31 July 1926 and, according to his nephew Ernest indirectly, developing a bad chest en route and repatriating.
British-Irish Thomas Beatty, single farming male aged 26 years from Ballinamallard, Ireland, departed Londonderry aboard the Caledonia on 23 April 1910, arriving in New York on 1 May. His nearest relative in Ireland was noted as his "father, John Beatty, Killymitten, Ballinamallard"; Thomas was bound for Brooklyn, New York; he had not previously been to the United States.. The manifest notes that Thomas paid the fare himself, arrived steerage with $40, had not been to America before, had a brother William Beatty at 88 Dean Street, Brooklyn, was neither a polygamist nor an anarchist, was in good health and not deformed, was 5'11”, fair complexion, brown hair and dark eyes. Also aboard the Caledonia was Thomas' cousin, widower William Mitchell aged 32 years from Drumsonnis, Ireland (who noted William Beatty as a cousin in resident in the US) and John Murphey (married, 40), Patrick Doorish (single, 24) and Thomas Armstrong (single, 20) all from Trillick, Ireland.
The 1920 US census [taken 17 January] appears to shew Thomas J Beatty and a younger Robert W Beatty [perhaps an error or misinformation], as single lodgers at Brooklyn Assembly District 10, Kings, New York:
Name Pos Age Immig/Nat B'Place Literacy Occupation
Beatty, Thomas J Lodger 35 1910/1916 Ireland R&W Motorman, Street RR
Beatty, Robert W Lodger 25 1912/1918 Ireland R&W Iron Worker, Dry Docks
Thomas James Beatty, a motorman aged 40, visited Ireland in 1926, arriving in Moville on 8 June aboard the Anchor Line's TSS Transylvania, ex New York, bound for Killymitten, Ballinamallard, Co Fermanagh; also aboard the Transylvania was 26-year old clerk Joseph Maguire bound for Glencoonra, Ballinamallard, and Patricia (3) and Joseph (2) Maguire bound for Conkhill, Drumkeerin.
Consistent with the family lore, Thomas James Beatty, aged 40 years and unmarried, departed Londonderry on 31 July 1926, arriving in New York on 8 August 1926 aboard the SS Cameronia: he was already a US citizen, naturalised in the Supreme Court State of New York at Brooklyn, New York, on 23 March 1916; his address in the United States was 553 Dean Street, Brooklyn, New York.
Thomas Beatty, motorman aged 45, again visited Ireland, arriving in Moville on 7 April 1929 aboard the Anchor Line's TSS California, ex New York, bound for Killymitten, Ballinamallard, Co Fermanagh. Thomas, aged 44 years, later travelled from Londonderry on 13 July 1929, arriving in New York on 21 July 1929 aboard the SS Caledonia: he had been naturalised a US citizen in the Supreme Court of Brooklyn on 23 March 1916, holding U.S.P.P. 643586; his address in the United States was 3711 Avenue L, Brooklyn, New York.
He returned to the UK again in 1930 as a motorman aged 45 [sic], arriving in Londonderry on 28 September 1930 per the Anchor Line's TSS Transylvania, ex New York bound for Killymitten, Ballinamallard. As on his previous returns to Ireland, the records indicate an intention to still reside in 'Foreign Lands' - the USA. It may be though that this was his final and permanent return to Ireland.
Noreen Elliott (pers comm. 2009i) thought that Thomas married — McKenzie in Ireland.
Thomas died on 11 March 1933 in Ireland and is noted on the Beatty headstone in Craghan Cemetery in Ballinamallard..
George Alexander Beatty, born 21 February 1886, youngest of nine children of JOHN ROLAND and SARAH BEATTY, married Elizabeth Jane Cluff. George remained in the UK; a tailor, he taught Johnny Veal the trade. George and Elizabeth were the parents of six children.
George Alexander Beatty died on 12 March 1952, aged 66 years; his wife Elizabeth Jane Beatty née Cluff died on 25 November 1989, aged 84 years. They were buried in Ballinamallard's Craghan Cemetery.
John Roland Beatty, born in November 1926, son of GEORGE ALEXANDER BEATTY and ELIZABETH JANE CLUFF, died young in May 1936, aged 9 years.
William Johnston Beatty (“Willie”), born January 1928, son of GEORGE ALEXANDER BEATTY and ELIZABETH JANE CLUFF, married Joy Price. William and Joy were the parents of five children.
Willie Beatty died in December 1993 and was buried in Ballinamallard's Craghan Cemetery.
George Alexander Beatty, known as "Lexie", was born in 1930. He never married and died in September 1969, aged 39 years.
Noreen Lucinda Beatty, born 1932, daughter of GEORGE ALEXANDER BEATTY and ELIZABETH JANE CLUFF, married John George Elliott. Noreen and John were the parents of four children.
John Elliott died in July 2006, aged 84 years, and was interred in Ballinamallard's Craghan Cemetery..
Kenneth Robert Beatty, born in 1937, son of GEORGE ALEXANDER BEATTY and ELIZABETH JANE CLUFF, married Frances Humes in 1961. Frances had been born in 1940 at Irvinestown, the daughter of WILLIAM and ELIZABETH HUME. Kenneth and Frances were the parents of six children.
Kenneth Robert Beatty died in February 2007, aged 69 years, and was buried in Ballinamallard's Craghan Cemetery.
Frances Beatty née Humes died at Ballinmallard in August 2011, survived by her children: The Impartial Reporter carried an obituary on 22 September 2011.
Victor Alfred Beatty, born in 1943, married Valda Mary Hassard. They were the parents of two children.
Robert W Beatty [“Bob”], born 1883 in Fermanagh, was the seventh of the nine children of JOHN ROLAND and SARAH BEATTY. Robert emigrated to the United States: the Alien Manifest for the SS Cameronia which arrived in New York on 3 November 1912 (ex Londonderry on 26 October 1912) lists Robert Beatty, farm labourer aged 20 years [sic], single, literate Irish-born British citizen from Ballinamallard, noting "mother Mrs Sarah Beatty, Carramitten [read Killymitten – ed.], Ballinamallard" as his nearest relative in his home country, bound for Brooklyn. He had not been to the United States before, paid his own fare and arrived with $35; he intended to join his “Brother Thos Beatty, 76 4 Ave Brooklyn”; he was neither a polygamist nor an anarchist; he was in good health, 5'10”, of fair complexion, fair hair and brown eyes but no distinguishing marks, and gave his birthplace as Carramitten, Ireland. With him travelled William Johnston, 20, shop assistant, literate, from Ballinamallard, nearest relative in Ireland being “brother John Johnston, Brookborough, Co Fermanagh”, Brooklyn bound intending to join “friend Thos Beatty, 76 4 Ave Brooklyn”.
Robert [or was it Guy?] married — Armstrong from Tyrone.
Robert died when Ernest was about 11 years old..
William David Beaty was born in Kilskeery on 30 May 1845, son of farmer JOHN [McGREGOR BETTY] and his wife DOROTHEA BEATY [DOROTHEA BEATY née BETTY] of Kanine [Kinine], and baptised 2 June 1845 by A.H. Irvine at Kilskeery Church of Ireland. No other information is available at the moment.
Mary Jane Betty was born 5 September 1847 and baptised 19 September 1847 at Kilskeery CoI, her parents noted as JOHN (farmer [JOHN McGREGOR BETTY]) and DARTHA(?) [DOROTHEA BETTY née BETTY] of Kanine [Kinine].
No other information is available at the moment.
was Eliza Jane Beattie (below) who married Henry Brien in 1892 in NSW baptised Mary Jane Betty?
Maria Beatty
Maria Beatty's name is written inside the cover of a New and Old Testament
book in the possession of G A Beattie. It was written 19 times as Beatty and
four times as Beattie. She was a niece of Andrew McGregor Beatty who wmigrated to NSW. In 1893
she sent a photograph (of herself) to Andrew McGregor Beattie, then in New
South Wales, inscribed "Uncle Andrew, Your Loving Niece, Maria Beatty,
Killimitten"; Gloria Russell-Brookes née Bailey had the photograph
in her possession. She thought the photograph, of a charming young person,
was sent to her Aunt Amy for painting a miniature. She did not know whether
Maria ever came to Australia.
Or perhaps Maria was a daughter of William David Beatty.
Guy Beatty, son of farmer JOHN and DOLLY BEATTY [JOHN McGREGOR BETTY and DOROTHEA BETTY née BETTY] of Kynine [Kanine / Kinine] townland in Kilskeery parish TYR, born June 1849, emigrated to Canada in 1868 aboard the SS Nova Scotian; a provisioning manifest signed in Londonderry on 7 August 1868 noted Guy Beatty as an Irish Labo[u]rer aged 20 years [which is in agreement with birth, baptism and death records but differs from the 1852/1851 noted in Canadian censuses]. Guy settled at Bobcaygeon, near Dunsford, ONT.
Bachelor farmer Guy Beatty married Ontario-born spinster Sarah Beatty on 24 January 1877 at Christ Church, Bobcaygeon ONT. Guy and Sarah were noted as residents of Verulam ONT; no ages were entered. Witnesses were Wm Thurston and Catharine Gray, both residents of Verulam. The 1901 Canadian census has Sarah born in rural Ontario on 29 October 1857 and the 1911 census conforms; the 1891 census has Sarah as Irish-born [she has not been located in the 1881 census].
Guy and Sarah raised seven children:
The 1881 Canadian census

Guy Beatty, noted as an Irish-born farmer aged 72 years 2 months and 20 days, a resident for 47 years, died in August 1921 at Verulam, and was buried at Dunsford (Verulam township). His father was noted as ‘Andrew Beatty’ by the informant, his son John Beatty, who at the time lived at 18 Albert Street Lindsay. [The residency of 47 years (since about 1874) suggests that Guy spent his first six years in Canada elsewhere, perhaps in another province.]
Guy was survived by his wife Sarah until 29 August 1941.
Yeoman William John Beatty ("Johnny") of Verulam, aged 23 years (born November 1877, ONT, the son of GUY BEATTY and SARAH BEATTY née BEATTY), married Ellen May Wright [“Nellie”] on 12 December 1900 at Bobcaygeon ont. Ellen, aged 20 years, was a resident of Bobcaygeon; the daughter of carpenter ROBERT WESLEY [or Lesley] WRIGHT and LUCY WHITING, she had been born in February 1880 [February 1878 according to the 1911 census] at Bobcaygeon. William G and Sarah M Wright of Bobcaygeon witnessed the wedding. [Robert Wesley Wright of Bobcaygeon was a Murry-born Baptist bachelor carpenter, aged 27, son of John and Malinda Wright, when he married Odissa-born Methodist spinster Lucy Whiting on 30 January 1872 at Smith Township, Peterboro County ONT; Lucy was a 17-year old spinster of Bobcaygeon, daughter of George and Margaret Wright].

Francis Cooke visited
some of this family during World War II while training with the Empire air-training
scheme. Richard Cantrill met the Dunsford Beattys and some in Saskatchewan
in 1970. Alex Henderson said he had never communicated with Guy.
Andrew McGregor
Beatty was born on 10 August 1851 and baptised at Kilskeery. He emigrated
with his nephew James John Henderson to NSW, departing Plymouth and arriving
in Sydney aboard the Peterborough on 26 August 1880. Also aboard the
Peterborough was Andrew's neice Lucinda Christy, 17, farm servant born in Tyrone, mentioned
in the previous chapter. Shortly thereafter he went to visit his sister Lucinda
on Fish River Creek, and later began working for George Bailey at "Bloomfield"
near Oberon. On 21 May 1884 at S. Barnabas' CoE Oberon, Andrew married Matilda
Bailey, daughter of GEORGE BAILEY and JANE ARMSTRONG and born 16 June
1846. Eliza Jane Beattie and George Thomas Bailey were witnesses at the wedding.
Having suffered some deprivations on board Andrew was physically and mentally
very ill on reaching Sydney, and was sent to Gladesville for treatment. He
was admitted to Gladesville Hospital on the 9 September 1880 as Andrew McGregor
Beatty, male, 26 years old, single, a labourer (immigrant), on advice of a
Foucart McLaurie. He was said to be suffering from Melancholia for the previous
5 weeks, said to be his first attack of the insanity. He was discharged, recovered
and cured, on the 27 December 1880, after 3 months 18 days in hospital. The
hospital Gladesville Admission Register note "uncle" in the column
titled "insane relations".
Shortly after his discharge from Gladesville Andrew went to visit his sister
Lucinda on Fish River Creek, and later began working for George Bailey at
"Bloomfield" near Oberon. On 21 May 1884 at S. Barnabas' CoE Oberon,
Andrew married Matilda BaileyEliza Jane Beattie and George Thomas Bailey were
witnesses at the wedding. There were two children to the marriage:
Andrew died at Bathurst
NSW on 1 August 1925, and was buried in Oberon General Cemetery. Matilda died
on 27 May 1926.
The Lithgow Mercury of 3 August 1925 reported Andrew's passing thus:
DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT.
(From Our Own Correspondent).
Mr. Andrew McGregor Beattie died in Bathurst Hospital on Friday night, at the age of 72 years. Deceased had resided in the Oberon District for over 50 years, and followed farming and grazing pursuits. He has left a widow, one son and one daughter.
The Lithgow Mercury of 28 March 1926 noted Matilda's demise:
DISTRICT RESIDENT'S DEATH.
THE LATE MRS. BEATTIE.
OBERON, Friday.
The death occurred yesterday of Mrs. Beattie, widow of the late Mr. Andrew Beattie, of Titania. The deceased, who was in her 80th year, had been in failing health for several months. She was a native of the district, being a member of the Bailey family, which is one of the oldest and best known in the district. She has left one son, Mr. George Beattie, of Cudal, and one daughter, Mrs. Cleland, of Titania. The late Mrs. Beattie, who was held in the highest esteem by all, was predeceased by her husband some 12 months ago.
The funeral will take place this (Friday) afternoon in the Church of England portion of the general cemetery, after a short service in St. Barnabas' Church, which deceased had attended for many years. The Rev. A. D. Bromhead will officiate.

George Roland Bailey
Beattie [Rowland often appears spelt Roland], son of ANDREW McGREGOR
BEATTIE and MATILDA BAILEY, was born in March 1885 at Oberon. He was educated
at Fish River Creek (later Titania) Public School. When 13½ years old
he received a Certificate deeming him to have sufficient education:He worked
on the family property "Bloomfield" all day six days a week, never
on a Sunday. His hobbies were cycling (eg the Goulburn to Sydney races) and
photography. In both he did very well. George was also an excellent craftsman,
exceptional in woodturning, and possessed a fine set of carperntry instruments.
He studied by correspondence, at night and using candlelight, and finally attained
his L.G. Certificate and Accounting Certificate, leaving "Bloomfield"
to pursue a career.
He started applying for positions about 1910, and may have sat for Auditors
and Clerks examinations about July 1911, but is not mentioned in the results.
In December 1911, while apparently employed at Gunnedah NSW, he successfully
sat for the Clerks examination, and in February 1912 was appointed relieving
Shire Clerk for Amaroo Shire based on Cumnock NSW. In September 1912 the Town
Clerk's position in Ulmarra Shire was advertised; George applied and was duly
appointed. In April 1913 he replied to an advertisment for the Town Clerk's
position at Blayney, which offered a salary of £169 per annum; it was
while he was Town Clerk at Blayney that he married, and that his first two children
were born.
July and August 1914 saw George pass the NSW Local Government Clerks and Auditors
examinations. In June 1915 he passed the Legal section and in December the other
examinations required to be admitted to the Institute of Incorporated Accountants.
On 27 April, he advertised the Blayney Town Clerk's position, with an annual
salary of £208, and about June or July 1916, aged 31 years, was appointed
Town Clerk at Molong. While in this lovely town, his third child and only son
was born in 1918, followed less than three years later by the death of his beloved
wife.
George and his family went to Cudal NSW c1923, where he was Shire Clerk of Boree
Shire. After his parents died in 1925 and 1926, he decided to hold on to his
secure position at Cudal rather than farm the family property at Oberon, and
entered into negotiations to lease the farm.
George married Rosa Mary Batcheldor on 27 December 1913 at Bexley,
NSW. Rosa was born on 25 October 1888 at "Spring Hill" near Oberon
NSW, the daughter of WILLIAM BATCHELDOR and his wife MARY JANE ROBINSON. George
and Rosa had three children:
The family house at Molong,
named "Titania", was immediately to the north of the District Hospital,
on the corner of Reynolds Street. Rosa's early death caused by a duodenal ulcer
on 1 June 1921 at Molong was a great blow to the family. She was interred in
the CoE Section at Oberon General cemetery, next to her parents-in-law. Shortly
after her death, the family moved to Cudal.
George R B Beattie subsequently married Dorothy Amy Ann Wilson
(not related to Wilsons family mentioned in another chapter): the marriage was registered at Cargo in 1922. Dorothy was apparently born on 10 August 1899 [her 1954 death notice (age 59 years [sic]) implies she was born in 1895] in the Huon River Valley, Tasmania; the family home at Cudal
was named "Huon" after her birthplace and later became the Cudal War
Memorial Hospital. There were no children to this marriage. A pleasant looking
woman, Dorothy suffered a mental condition - perhaps related to the influenza
epidemic - and made life difficult for all near her.
The death of Dorothea Amy Ann Beattie née Wilson, daughter of GEORGE FRANCIS and EMILY ROCKCLIFFE, was registered at Katoomba in 1954; by that time George had retired to a house called "Clairvaux" at 16 Cecil Street,
Blackheath NSW, on the edge of the western escarpment of the Blue Mountains.
Sold soon after his death and for many years detiorating under lease, the cottage
was purchased, renovated and put on the holiday rental market in the 1990s.
On 10 September 1970 George wrote to his daughter Ruth of his intention to depart
Blackheath on 15 September to visit her in Murwillumbah, and hoping he would
not become lost at the railway station as he had on his previous visit.
On 27 September 1970 George R B Beattie, aged 85 and after suffering a stroke,
left his house and wandered, disoriented, towards the town 1.5km away. Halfway
there he may have suffered another stroke, slipped from the footpath into some
dense scrub, and lost his way. He was found the following Wednesday after extensive
searches by volunteers and police. Having survived very bleak and icy overnight
conditions, he was taken to hospital at Katoomba and later to Cudal and then
to Leura. Although he never fully recovered from the ordeal, he occasionally
remembered his location and his early life. Once at Cudal, nurses searched for
him when he went missing from his bed. They found him in the back grounds of
the hospital, and when they asked him if he knew where he was he replied "Yes,
of course I do. I lived here for 27 years". George died at Leura on 25
August 1971, and was buried next to Rosa at Oberon.
Dorothy Jane Beattie
("Dolly") was born on 14 December 1886/7 at Oberon, and had a very
rough life but lived to 95½. She was engaged to Percy Cunynghame who
died shortly after World War I (1919, Randwick NSW ), having been gassed in
France. Dolly married late to David Cleland on 28 March 1921 at
"Bloomfield" . David, born ??c1886 in Glasgow, was the son of DAVID
MOORE CLELAND, carpenter, and his wife JANET JESSIE RICHARDSON. His siblings
born in New South Wales were Amelia R Cleland (born 1891 ; married Robert Robertson,
Mosman, 1919 ), Charles S Cleland (born 1894 , married Mildred Emma Hill, Sydney,
1922 ; a son Donald Cleland died in 1924 at Mosman ), Victor Albert Cleland
(born 1897 ; married Eileen May Drew, Mosman, 1942 ), Lillian Isobel Cleland
(born 1900 ; married Albert Louis Murray, Mosman, 1943 ) and Donald B Cleland
(born 1902 ; married Myrtle E Nettleton, Mosman, 1935 ). [The death of a David
M Cleland, son of David and Elizabeth and possibly the David Moore Cleland above,
was registered at Mosman in 1927 .]

Stephen Beatty and his wife Margaret — of Corkhill townland Kilskeery parish were the parents of (at least):
On 21 January 1804, Stephen Beatty was married by licence at Kilskeery CoI to Hanna Blakely of Kilskeery: it is assumed that this was the same Stephen, previously the husband of Margaret. Children baptised at Kilskeery CoI to Stephen and Hanna(h) Beatty of Corkhill were:

… My gggm was Margaret Henderson. She married James Clingen in Kilskeery in 1825. Margaret was from Corkhill and James from Derry. … Are you familiar with the Beattys who settled around Yackandandah in the north east of Victoria: William and Stephen. Their father was Crozier Beatty of Kilskeery.
… the Yackandandah Beattys? My ggf, Archibald Clingen was Church of Ireland and my ggm was Catholic. One of the Yackandandah Beattys wrote home to Ireland that Archie had married a Catholic and on a market in Clabby it was shouted in the Clabby pub that "Archie Clingen had married a finenagen". Apparently a cousin took the news home to the Clingen farm. The Beattys and Clingens were neighbours still in the early 1900s. I realise that there were a lot of Beattys. It's hard enough to find Clingens ... an uncommon name.
Apparently the Beattys were instrumental in setting up the first Wesleyan Methodist church in Yackandandah.
Crozier Beatty, baptised at Kilskeery CoI on 4 January 1801, was the son of STEPHEN and MARGARET BEATTY of Corkhill townland Kilskeery parish. Crozier, a resident of Kilskeery parish, married Mary Somerville of Magheracross in Kilskeery CoI on 27 February 1829. It is possible that Mary was the child baptised at Kilskeery CoI on 23 April 1789, the daughter of ROBERT and JANE SOMMERVILLE. Progeny of Crozier and Mary included:
From details on his son William’s 1870 marriage certificate and his son Guy’s death registration, it appears Crozier Beatty married again, to Elizabeth McFarland. Progeny of Crozier and Elisabeth seem to include:
A list of Landowners in Co Tyrone, 1876 shews the following Beattys:
James Beattie, address Castlederg, owned 34 acres.
William Beattie, address Ardarver, Kelleter, owned 62 acres.
Crozier Beatty, address Corkill, Killskeery, owned 115 acres.
James Beatty, no address given, owned 17 acres.
Jane Beatty, address Miltown, Newtownstewart, owned 74 acres.
Rowland Beatty, address Aughnacloy, owned 86 acres.
William Beatty, address Altamullan, Kelleter, owned 206 acres.
William Beatty, address Armagh, owned 43 acres.
The Yackandandah Times of Friday 31 July 1896 reported the death in Kilskeery of Crozier Beatty:
Death – Beatty
On May 28th at his residence, Killskerry, County Tyrone, Ireland, Crozier Beatty, beloved father of William and Guy Beattie, Yackandandah, aged 96 years.
The birth of a Crozier Beatty in Fermanagh in 1841 is listed on the Emerald Isles WebSite [24dec2008].
A Crozier Beatty died on 7 May 1845, the Armagh Guardian reporting his death on 13 May 1845:
DIED. On Wednesday, the 7th inst., suddenly, at his residence, Gorthaloghan, near Enniskillen, Mr. Crozier Beatty, a highly respectable farmer, and much esteemed. He was advanced in years, and was in perfect health a few moments previous to his death.
Of general interest, note the birth of Robert B Crozier registered to THOMAS and REBECCA CROZIER registered at Shoalhaven NSW in 1878. The Sydney Morning Herald of Tuesday 18 November 1952 (p16) reported his death:
CROZIER, Robert Beattie.-November 17, 1952, at David Berry Hospital, Berry, relict of the late Margaret Anne Crozier, dearly beloved father of Kathleen (Mrs. Ward), Ella (Mrs. Harry Bates), Russell (Thirroul), dear grandfather of James, Russell, Margaret and Barbara Ward and loved great-grand-father of Hazel and Peter, aged 74 years.
Stephen Beatty, baptised at Kilskeery CoI, Co Tyrone Ireland, on 15 March 1830, son of CROZIER BEATTY and MARY SOMERVILLE of Corkhill, emigrated to Victoria aus about 1852. A grazier, he died at Kiewa, Yackandandah Shire VIC on 21 March 1894 aged 62, ‘being accidentally drowned whilst crossing the Mitta Mitta River near Huon Lane’ and was buried on 25 March 1894 at Yackandandah Cemetery. The informant of his death certificate, a John Baird (present at the Magisterial Inquiry of 24 March 1894), stated that Stephen was the son of farmer Crozier Beatty, had been born in Co Tyrone, Ireland, had been in the colony of Victoria for 42 years and entered ‘nil’ for married and issue. An unsourced obituary per Virginia Tanasio [eMailed 22dec2008] read:
Stephen Beatty
It is with much regret that we have to record the death of Mr. Stephen Beatty of Huon Lane, brother of Cr. W. Beatty of Yackandandah and Mr. Guy Beatty of Osbornes Flat which took place on Wednesday or Thursday last.
Mr. Beatty’s horse was found riderless near the Mitta river on Thursday and it was immediately surmised he had fallen into the river while fording a crossing. A search party was formed and the river dragged on Thursday and Friday but the body was not recovered till Friday evening.
Deceased was several feet under water in the branches of a fallen tree, a short distance below the crossing near the deceased’s farm. Strange to say a few days earlier Mr. Beatty fell off his horse while crossing but he managed to save himself by means of a tree in the river under which on Friday he was found lifeless.
Deceased was 62 years of age and of late used to complain of dizziness while crossing the Mitta, although, in the past, he has crossed it hundreds to times without inconvenience. The body was taken to his brother, William’s home
Stephen Beatty, aged 62, was buried on 25 March 1894 at Yackandandah Cemetery. The Argus (Melbourne) of 5 October 1894 (p7) published a probate notice:
NOTICE is hereby given, that after the expiratlon of fourteen days from the publication hereof application will be made to the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria, in its Probate jurisdiction, that LETTERS of ADMINISTRATION of the estate and effects of STEPHEN BEATTY, late of Huon-lane in the said colony, grazier, deceased, intestate, may be granted to William Beatty, of Yackandandah, in the said colony, butcher, a brother of the said deceased, under and by virtue of a power of attorney from Crozier Beatty, of Corkhill, in the county Tyrone, Ireland, farmer (the father of the said deceased), duly authorising the said William Beatty to apply for such grant.
Bachelor miner William Beatty, aged 24, married spinster schoolmistress Margaret Lobborn, aged 23, by licence on 26 October 1870 in the Wesleyan Church, Yackandandah, Victoria aus. Both were residents of Yackandandah; William noted that he had been born at Corkhill, Tyrone IRL, the son of farmer CROZIER BEATTY and ELISAth McFARLAND [?, maiden surname difficult to read]. William arrived in Yackandandah in 1864 [A William Beatty, aged 26 years [born about 1838], had arrived in NSW aboard the Ida on 18 January 1864, the vessel having sailed from Ballymoat, Co Sligo: the age would suggest this was not William from Kilskeery].
Margaret noted that she had been born at Moneay NSW [indexes indicate Moruya], the daughter of KENNETH LOBBORN and JANE FEDRIDGE, she had been born 17 May 1846 and baptised in NSW in 1846. Margaret had arrived in Yackandandah about 1854 when aged 8.
William and Margaret were the parents of ten children:
The Argus onTuesday 22 March 1892 (p5) reported:
SERIOUS ACCIDENT WITH FIREARMS
YACKANDANDAH, Monday.
To-day a serious shooting accident occurred at Yackandandah. A little girl adopted by Mr. Ward, a butcher in the employ of Mr. Beatty, was sitting on a rail playing with some other children of the family when one of the latter, six or seven years of age, got hold of a loaded gun that was in the house, and pointing it at the little girl discharged it. The child is seriously injured, the shot having penetrated the abdomen, and Dr. Mueller, who is attending her, has no hope of her recovery.
The 1903 Electoral Rolls (Division of Indi) shew grazier William Beatty with Margaret Jane Beatty and Eliza Jane Beatty (both engaged in home duties) at Back Creek, Yackandandah.
William Beatty, grazier, died at The Acacias, Shire of Yackandandah, County of Bogong, Victoria, on 12 May 1906. His son George E Beatty of Yackandandah noted William’s age as 61 years and father as Crozier Beatty (mother not known) and said William had been born in County Tyrone Ireland and resident in Victoria 42 years. He noted that his father had, aged 24 years, married Margaret Lobban at Yackandandah and that their issue had been Robert Crozier (aged 35 in 1906), Eliza Jane (33), William Lobban (32), Stephen Charles (30), Kenneth James (28), George Ernest (26), Margaret Ann (22), Crozier John (20) and Alexander (17). William was buried on 13 May 1906 at Yackandandah Cemetery (Methodist section).
The Advertiser (Adelaide) on Saturday 14 July 1906 (p10) reported:
MELBOURNE, July 13.
Mr. William Beatty, of Yackandandah, grazier, who died on May 12 last, left estate valued at £15,934.
Virginia Tanasio eMailed [22dec2008] the following obituary highlights:
William Beatty.
Held a high position for 20 years. Son of Crozier Beatty of Kilskeery, County Tyrone.
Arrived here in 1864. Spent some time in Geelong with friends and then joined his brother, Stephen, in mining pursuits in Yackandandah.
Went to Dunedin, N.Z. in 1868 for 12 months and was a storekeeper.
Returned to Oz when gold discovered in Gympie, Queensland.
In 1870 married Margaret Lobban, owned a lot of property.
Entertained the Governor General Lord Jersey. Threw a big party when Edward became King.
Exhibited cattle.
Youngest son, Alexander 17. Oldest Robert Crozier in NZ and expected home shortly. William is in WA. Stephen Charles is in Tasmania. Kenneth James was a Lieutenant and served in the Boer War. Stayed in SA and is now a magistrate. Kenneth had to go to Ireland on business and asked his parents to meet him there.
George Ernest is residing at Noorongong – (a Beatty property).
Youngest son is at school in Melbourne. Crozier John and daughters were residing at home.
As a public man he was always to the fore in any movement in aid of the churches or charitable institutions. He gave valuable assistance in connection with the building of the Yackandandah sanatorium and was a good supporter of the Atheneum – in fact we can say that there was no public movement on foot that William Beatty, if not at the head, was not in some way connected with, for he was not a man that was only satisfied to work there at the helm but his heart was in any good cause.
All surrounding districts have lost a best man.
After William died, his widow Margaret appears to have lived with her son Crozier John Beatty and daughters Eliza Jane and Margaret Ann Beatty at Back Creek near Yackandandah (they are all listed at Back Creek, Yackandandah, in the 1909 Electoral Roll; in the 1914 Roll Eliza Jane is absent but Alexander has joined them; the 1919, 1924, 1931 and 1936 Rolls shew only Crozier and Margaret Jane at Back Creek).
The family seems to have been well known as The Argus of Thursday 18 May 1939 (p19) remarked:
Mrs. W. Beatty, mother of Sir Kenneth Beatty, Chief Justice of Gibraltar, who celebrated her 93rd birthday yesterday. Mrs. Beatty is living with her daughter, Mrs. G. Wray, of Yackandandah.
The Argus of Friday 19 May 1939 (p12) followed (with picture):
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
YACKANDANDAH.— Mrs. Margaret Beatty, of Yackandandah, relict of the late William Beatty, celebrated her 93rd birthday on Wednesday. She has lived in the Yackandandah district since the age of 8 years.
Margaret Jane Beatty, aged 94, was buried on 11 February 1941 at Yackandandah Cemetery with William. Melbourne's The Argus of Monday 10 February 1941 (p4 and p5) reported:
(p4) BEATTY.-On February 9, Margaret Jane, widow of the late Willam Beatty, Yackandandah, aged 94 years. Passed peacefully away. A devoted wife and mother.
(p5) MRS. MARGARET BEATTY
YACKANDANDAH, Sunday.— Mrs Margaret Jane Beatty died to-day at the age of 94. She was born at Moruya (NSW.), and in 1854 she trekked with her parents to Yackandandah gold-fields The journey took three months.
She took a keen Interest in current affairs and worked for the Red Cross. Widow of the late Mr. William Beatty, she is survived by five sons and two daughters.
One son, Sir Kenneth Beatty, former Chief Justice of Gibraltar, recently hastened home from Canada to see his mother. He was accompanied by Lady Beatty and their daughter Marguerite. Sir Kenneth Beatty plans to remain in Yackandandah.
The funeral will take place at Yackandandah cemetery on Tuesday.
The Argus had also earlier run the short “obituary” for Margaret's brother Archibald (Tuesday 10 September 1935, p10; his death had been registered at Albury with parents noted as Kenneth and Margaret):
Mr. Archbald Lobban, aged 75 years, a pioneer of the Talgarno district, has died. He is survived by his widow, one son, and three daughters. Mrs. Beatty, Yackandandah; Mrs. W. Morrison, Essendon; and Mrs. A. Sudekum, Glen Iris, are sisters.
Eliza Jane Beatty, born circa 1873 at Yackandandah VIC, daughter of WILLIAM BEATTY and MARGARET LOBBIN, was residing at home when father died in 1906. Eliza married George Henry Wray at Yackandandah in 1913 as announced in The Argus on Saturday 7 June 1913 (p13): “WRAY - BEATTY.— On the 8th April, at "The Acacias," Yackandandah, by the Rev. Wm. C. J. Peart, George Henry, youngest son of Mrs. M. A. and the late James Wray, of Beechworth, to Eliza Jane, eldest daughter of Mrs. M. J. and the late William Beatty, of Yackandandah.” The birth of George, son of JAMES WRAY and MARY ANN DOHERTY, had been registered at Yackandandah in 1873.
Eliza and George were the parents of (at least):
Electoral Rolls shew George [solicitor] and Eliza [home duties] in Yackandandah between 1914 and 1931, in 1936, 1937, 1942 and 1949 they were joined by Clement William Winifred Wray [clerk]; in 1954 George alone is listed at Yackandandah. In 1919 William Wray [mine manager] was also in Yackandandah.
Eliza's death in 1951 was noted in The Argus of Monday 5 November 1951 (p16):

The death of George Henry Wray at York VIC, aged 91, son of JAMES WRAY and MARY ANN DOHERTY, was registered in 1964..
William Lobbin Beatty, born 1874 at Yackandandah VIC, son of WILLIAM BEATTY and MARGARET LOBBIN, was said to have been living in Western Australia when his father died in 1906. William married Ada Mary Stuckey. Ada, born 1877, was the daughter of THOMAS STUCKEY and SARAH WRIGHT, married in 1864.
William and Ada were the parents of:

The Carnamah Historical Society's Carnamah-Winchester WebSite http://www.carnamah.com.au/ca3.html [accessed 21aug2010} has a short surmise of William's life in Western Australia.
William Lobbin Beatty, born November 1898 at Yackandandah VIC but birth registered at Dandenong VIC in 1899, son of WILLIAM LOBBAN BEATTY and ADA MAY STUCKEY, was living in Western Australia by 1906. William married Frances Sylvia Carroll, born 1903 the daughter of EDWARD and ELIZABETH CARROLL, in Perth during 1926.
William and Frances were the parents of:

Stephen Charles Beatty, born 1876 at Yackandandah VIC, son of WILLIAM BEATTY and MARGARET LOBBORN, was said to have been living in Tasmania when his father died in 1906. The marriage of Stephen and Florence Amelia Austin was registered in Sydney in 1937 though possibly occurred earlier as Stephen [miner] and Florence [home duties] are listed in the 1930, 1936, 1937, 1943, 1949 and 1954 NSW Electoral Rolls as living along the Gundagai Road at Cootamundra NSW.

The [Melbourne] Argus of Wednesday 1 January 1941, p5, reported on a visit by Kenneth to his mother:
AGED MOTHER AWAITS SON
Sir K. Beatty's Visit
YACKANDANDAH, Tuesday. The new year is awaited with joy by Mrs. William Beatty, aged 94, of Yackandandah, for it will bring her distinguished son. Sir Kenneth Beatty, to visit her. Mrs. Beatty was hale and hearty until recently, but her health to-day is indifferent. Sir Kenneth, with Lady Beatty and their daughter Marguerite, reached Sydney to-day, and will be in Yackandandah soon after his arrival in Melbourne on Saturday.
Sir Kenneth was formerly Chief Justice of Gibraltar, and on reaching the retiring age in June, he went to Canada for six months before coming to Australia for an indefinite period. He visited New Zealand on the way, and curtailed his visit there in order to be with his mother.
He is a veteran of three wars, having been a lieutenant in the Bushman's Contingent in the Boer war, and having served later in the Zulu war and the Great War. He became a police magistrate in the Northern Transvaal on the establishment there of order by the British Government. Later he went to London, and was called to the Bar of the Middle Temple.
Sir Kenneth successively held appointments as police magistrate in Sierra Leone, judge of the Supreme Court of the Gold Coast, West Africa, Chief Justice of the Bermudas, Chief Justice of the Bahamas, and finally Chief Justice of Gibraltar.
The same day (1 January 1941) Hobart's The Mercury reported (p3):
Personal.
Sir Kenneth Beatty, Chief Justice of Gibraltar since 1931, and Lady Beatty will visit Australia shortly. They are at present on a health tour in New Zealand. Sir Kenneth Beatty is a son of the late Mr. William Beatty, of Yackandandah. He was educated at the Melbourne University High School and Melbourne University.
The Argus, Wednesday 8 January 1941 (p5) announced:
HOME TO VISIT AGED MOTHER
Distinguished Son
Sir Kenneth Beatty, former Chief Justice of Gibraltar and holder of many positions as magistrate in the colonial service, arrived in Melbourne yesterday and Is leaving for Yockandandoh to visit his mother. Mrs William Beatty, 94, who has been eagerly awaiting his arrival.
Since his retirement in June Sir Kenneth Beatty has visited Canada and New Zealand, but curtailed his visit to the latter Dominion in ordei to go to Yackandandah, as his mother has been in indifferent health íecently. He is accompanied by Lady Beatty and their daughter, Marguerite.
A son of the late Mr. William Beatty, of Yackandandah, he was educated at University High School, Melbourne, and Melbourne University. He served as a lieutenant in the Bushmen's Contingent in the Boer War, and was also in the war of 1914-18. He was called to the Bar of the Middle Temple in London after serving as a police magistrate in Northern Transvaal.
Sir Kenneth Beatty held appointments as police magistrate and registrar-general in Sierra Leone, puisne judge of the Gold Coast Colony, Chief Justice of the Bermudas, Chief Justice of the Bahamas, before becoming Chief Justice of Gibraltar.
Alater report (The Argus, Wednesday 8 January 1941, p5) noted:
SIR K. BEATTY IN HOME TOWN
YACKANDANDAH, Tuesday - Sir Kenneth Beatty, accompanied by Lady Beatty, and their daughter, Marguerite, arrived at his home town this afternoon. His 94-year-old mother, who has been in indifferent health lately, was able to leave her bed, and was overjoyed at seeing her distinguished son after an absence of five years. It was 10 years since she had seen Lady Beatty, and the first time she hod seen her granddaughter.
Mrs Beatty, who was born at Shoalhaven River (NSW), has lived in the Yackandandah district since she was eight. She trekked from New South Wales in a bullock waggon. Until her illness Mrs Beatty was a keen knitter, and knitted a teacosy for a competition at a recent Red Cross radio party drive.
A bibliographic reference suggests Kenneth James Beatty died on 17 October 1966.
George Ernest Beatty, born circa 1880 at Yackandandah VIC [specified as Bethanga on his death certificate], son of WILLIAM BEATTY and MARGARET LOBBORN, was said to have been residing at Noorongong (a Beatty property) when his father died in 1906. A farmer aged 26, he married Blanche Margaret Burke in Melbourne (they are both listed at Kinchington Creek, Yackandandah, in the 1909 Electoral Rolls, and at Yackandandah in the 1914 and 1919 Rolls).
George and Blanche appear to have been the parents of:
Blanche, aged 43 years, was buried in the Roman Catholic section of Yackandandah Cemetery on 25 January 1923. Her parents were noted as JAMES BURKE and ELIZABETH McMAHON. Elizabeth Janson [elizajan@yahoo.com, per eMail 17 August 2010] on her WebSite http://mepnab.netau.net/b/b12.html#beatty has information from Peter Dowling [pd496237@bigpond.net.au] has Blanche "born at Collingwood 1884 (BDM-23618). Margaret's mother is listed on the birth entry as Margaret Welsh not Walsh and her father is listed as John Conway Bourke": the BDM index seems erroneous.
George Ernest later married Catherine Ann Stephens at Beechworth circa 1924 (George [farmer] and Catherine [home duties] are listed at Yackandandah in the 1931, 1936 and 1954 Electoral Rolls).
According to George’s death certificate, he and Catherine were the parents of:
George Ernest Beatty of Tawonga Roadside died on 11 November 1960 aged 80 years at Wangaratta District Base Hospital; the informant for the death certificate was K S Beatty of Tawonga Roadside. George was buried on 13 November 1960 at Yackandandah Cemetery (Methodist section Row 3). Catherine Ann Beatty died 28 November 1987, aged 90 years, buried 1 December 1987 at Yackandandah with George.
Beatrice Margaret Beatty, born circa 1912 at Yackandandah VIC, was a daughter of GEORGE ERNEST BEATTY by his first wife BLANCHE MARGRET BURKE. 1936 and 1937 Victorian Electoral Rolls shew a Beatrice Margaret Beatty [dressmaker] at 300 Glenferrie rd., Malvern. Beatrice's marriage to William Edward Blanchard was celebrated at Yackandandah on Tuesday 18 June 1940, as noted in The Argus of that day (p6):

Beatty, Yackandandah, and William Edward Blanchard, only son of Mr. W. J. Blanchard and the late Mrs. Blanchard, of Chelsea.
The bride, who was given away by her father, chose an azure-blue frock with navy accessories. She was attended by Miss Mollie Sulivan, in a teal-blue frock. Mr. K. W. Beatty was best man.
The Argus of Saturday 24 May 1941 (p14) carried a notice that William Edward Blanchard intended to apply for the Victualler's licence for Clare Castle Hotel at Rathdown street, Carlton:

The death of William Edwin Blanchard, aged 68 (born circa 1914), was registered in Victoria in 1982.
Keith Stewart Beatty [“Pip”], born circa 1931 at Yackandandah VIC, son of GEORGE ERNEST BEATTY by his second wife CATHERINE ANN STEPHENS, married Ellen — [“Pat”]. Keith was the father of (at least):
From Keith’s death notice [see below], he and Ellen appear to have been the parents of seven children, each married.
Electoral Rolls for 1954 list Keith Stewart Beatty [draftsman] at R.M.B., Tawonga roadside, Yackandandah.
Melbourne's Herald Sun of Tuesday 21 June 2011 carried the announcements:

Bachelor miner Guy Beatty and miner’s daughter Catherine McIntosh married on 13 August 1873 in ‘the house of John McIntosh, Osborne’s Flat, Yackandandah’ by Presbyterian minister James Greig, after notices and declarations. Guy, 21, was noted as born at ‘Corkhill, Parish of Kilskeery, County of Tyrone, Ireland’, the son of farmer CROZIER BEATTY and ELIZABETH BEATTY née MacFARLANE. Catherine, a spinster aged 19, had been born in Melbourne VIC, the daughter of miner JOHN McINTOSH and MARGARET McINTOSH née STEWART. The present and usual residences of both Guy and Catherine were given as Osborne’s Flat; the marriage was witnessed by William Beatty, Stephen Beatty and Alexander McIntosh.
Guy and Catherine were the parents of:
Guy was noted as living at Osborne’s Flat in his brother Stephen’s 1894 obituary. The death of Guy Beatty, son of CROZIER and ELIZABETH, was registered at Inverell NSW in 1924.

“Notice that some are Catholic. It appears that George Ernest married Blanche, a Catholic. I notice that she and their offspring are buried in the Catholic section and George is in "Other/Methodist". … From memory, Guy Beatty married in New South Wales. May have been Grafton."
Margaret Dorothy Beatty ("Maggie") arrived in NSW around 1898. She was born circa 1862
(based on stated age on death certificate) or 1884 (based on stated age on wedding
certificate) in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, Ireland, the daughter JOHN BEATTY,
a soldier, and MARY BYERS. It is not yet clear exactly who this John Beatty
was, but Margaret was known to Sylvia Evans as "Aunt Maggie" and she
always thought of her as a sister of "Aunt (Lucinda) Wilson" and "Aunt
(Eliza Jane) Brien". Maggie wrote to G R B Beattie in 1935, signing "cousin",
though this may have been a liberal use of the term.
Maggie, 30, spinster engaged in domestic duties, married Alfred Forster,
32, bachelor labourer, at Chalmers Street Presbyterian Church, Sydney, on the
14 April 1914. The officiant was John Paterson. Alfred was born circa 1882 at Alandale, England, to WILLIAM FORSTER, a farmer, and his wife MARY.
At the time of Maggie's wedding, both her parents were deceased, as was Alfred's
father. Witnesses at the wedding were Christian Nanson and Ethel L Wilson.
Gloria Russell-Brookes said that Maggie ran a boarding house in a two storey
building at 31 Buckingham Street, Redfern, near to another run by Mrs Pierce
(seemingly a sister of Jane Armstrong who married George Bailey; Mrs Pierce
apparently emigrated to NSW about 1839 and encouraged George and Jane (and others)
to emigrate; her boarding house was for girls and had a very good reputation
and an association with S James' CoE in Sydney). In early days the boarding
house run by the Forsters was held in high esteem, but in her later years of
senility the standard declined.
Margaret Forster née Beatty, aged 86 years, died childless at her home
in Buckingham Street, Redfern, on 23 January 1948. She was buried two days later
in the Congregational Cemetery. Her maiden name, age or birthplace were noted
as "Unknown" on her death ificate, for which her husband Alfred
was the informant.
William Beattie and his wife Jane — [living in Killimitten, Magheracross, Fermanagh, in 1885] were the parents of (at least):
The Matoaka brought John Beattie, 25, and Eliza Beattie, 19, from Magheracross, together with Elizabeth Jane Hamilton, 25, and her brother William Hamilton, 33, from Kilskeery, and Margaret Ramsay, 21, from Derryvullan, Fermanagh, and all, possibly excluding Eliza Beattie, settled in the Wollongong / Illawarra / Shoalhaven district, south of Sydney. Elizabeth Jane's and William's brother, Allen Roy Hamilton, also emigrated to NSW and settled in the same region: his marriage to Mary Jane McPaul was registered at Wollongong in 1866. The Matoaka's List of Immigrants record that Eliza Beattie said that she had “Two uncles – Richard and Towngle* Robinson supposed to be resident in Sydney”, while John Beattie said he had “A sister at the depot” [this was possibly referring to Eliza]. Elizabeth Hamilton said that she had “an uncle James Harrington living in Wollongong” while her brother William said he had “A Cousin James Hetherington living at Wollongong”. Margaret Ramsay said she had no relatives in the colony on arrival. [* best effort at deciphering – ed.]

List of Immigrants per Ship Matoaka as inspected by the Immigration Board in Sydney on 19th May 1855 |
On 30 June 1860 in NSW, William Hamilton paid £8.0.0 total towards the cost of passage of farm labourers Allan Hamilton, 23, of Drumsonness [Drumsonnus], Co Tyrone, Ireland [nominated referee “Revd Arthur Irwin, C. of E. C., of Kilskeery, Co Tyrone, Ireland”], and John Ramsay, 22, of Glenall, Co Fermanagh, Ireland [nominated referee “Revd J. N. Rutledge, C. of E. C., Derravollan”. Allan Hamilton. 26, single, farm labourer, from Kilskirry [Kilskeery], Tyrone, CoE and able to read and write, and John Ramsay, 22, single, farm labourer, from Lowtherstown, Fermanagh, CoE and able to read and write, duly arrived in Sydney in the Queen Bee on 31 March 1861. Allen Roy Hamilton's marriage to Mary Jane McPaul was registered at Wollongong in 1866: they had at least ten children, the last four at Gulgong.
John Beatty arrived in NSW as an assisted immigrant on 17 May 1855 aboard the Matoaka: the ship's Immigration Board Inspection list note John as a single male agricultural labourer, 25 [a disparity], from Magheracross, Fermanagh, CoE and literate. Also aboard the Matoaka was single female housemaid Eliza Beatty, 19, from Magheracross, Fermanagh, CoE and literate. The Immigration Board's list for the Matoaka add that farm labourer John Beattie's parents were WILLIAM and JANE, "living at Killmitn"* [or Ballinamallard?], and he had a “A sister at the depot” [presumably Eliza – ed.] and his health was 'Good'; Eliza Beatty's parents were WILLIAM and JANE “living near MaraCross”, and that she had “Two Uncles – Richard and Towngle* Robinson supposed to be resident in Sydney”, her health was 'Good'. The Matoaka's recapitulation shews it brought 408 immigrants – 46 married males, 46 married females, 59 single adult males and 210 single adult males (the rest were children). [* – best effort deciphering – ed.]
It is possible that Eliza remained unmarried and was the Elizabeth J Beattie, daughter of WILLIAM and JANE, whose death was registered in Wollongong in 1896. Information from John Chappell (March 2013) suggests she married Ellis: NSW BDM indexes have the marriage of an Elizabeth Beattie and a William Ellis registered at Port Curtis [in Queensland?] in 1856.
John married Fermanagh-born Elizabeth Jane Hamilton in a Wesleyan Methodist ceremony in December 1855 at Wollongong on NSW's Illawarra coast, about 100km south of Sydney. Elizabeth, 25, and her brother William, 33, both emigrated to NSW in the Matoaka (1855). The Matoaka's logs shew that Elizabeth, 'never in service', and William, ' farm servant', hailed from the parish of Kilskeery in Tyrone and were the children of WILLIAM HAMILTON and JANE ALLEN, both living at Kilskeery in Tyrone. Elizabeth could read and write, had an uncle James Harrington (Elizabeth) / cousin James Hetherington (William) already living in Wollongong NSW, were in good health, had no complaints, paid £5 each [R. R James Hetherington]. On the Matoaka's 'List of Immigrants' Elizabeth is noted as a domestic servant.
John and Eliza seem to have been the parents of:
John Beattie died on 15 July 1889, aged 65 years, and was buried at Wollongong. His wife Elizabeth Jane Beattie née Hamilton died 27 December 1896, aged 63 years, and was buried in the same grave. The death registrations noted the parents of each as WILLIAM and JANE. Nelda Percival [nelda_percival@hotmail.com, 24mar2005] posted the following Wollongong headstone transcriptions from Christene Hartley [chartley@tpg.com.au, 23mar2005] to the BP2000 Rootsweb list:

The birth of Eliza J Beattie, daughter of JOHN BEATTY and ELIZABETH JANE HAMILTON, was registered in Sydney in 1857. Ellen's first marriage was to Edward Kent: she was his second wife, and they were the parents of (at least):
Eliza's death was registered either as Eliza J Bryant, daughter of JOHN and ELIZABETH J, at Newtown in 1892 or perhaps as Elizabeth Bryant, parents unknown, registered at St Peters in 1896.
Lilian Kent, born 18 February 1882 at Stanley Street, East Sydney, was the second daughter of EDWARD KENT and ELIZA JANE BEATTY.
Lilian married Archibald Francis Gorrel at S John's CoE, Darlinghurst, on 10 July 1904. Archie's birth to FRANCIS ALEXANDER GORREL and ELIZA MARJORY/MARGREY LINTERN had been registered at Paddington in 1881. Francis Gorrell, 17, had arrived in Sydney with his widowed mother Mary in the Light Brigade in May 1867, hailing from Dromore, County Tyrone: his marriage as Frank A Gorrell to Eliza M Linton or Lintern had been registered in Paddington in 1879; Frank's death registration in Sydney in 1931 noted his parents as ISAAC and MARY.
Archie and Lilian were the parents of (at least):
Lillian Gorrel's death on 2 September 1964, registered at Bowral nsw as Lilliam Gorrell, daughter of EDWARD and JANE, age 82, 'at Bowral, late of 'Rosscor', Bowral', was noted in The Sydney Morning Herald next day. The death of Archibald Francis Gorrell, son of FRANCIS and ELIZA MARJORY, on 28 December 1977, aged 96, 'at West Ryde', was noted in the Sydney Morning Herald next day.
The birth of William Beattie, son of JOHN BEATTY and ELIZABETH JANE HAMILTON, was registered in Wollongong in 1858. The marriage of William Beattie and Anastasia Slattery was registered in Sydney in 1897. There were no children to this marriage.
The death of William Beattie, son of JOHN and ELIZABETH J, was registered at Wollongong in 1916, The Sydney Morning Herald of Saturday 9 December 1916 noting: “BEATTIE.—December 8, 1916, at his residence, Market-square, Wollongong, William Beattie, aged 57 years..”
The death of Anastasia Beattie née Slattery, daughter of WILLIAM and BRIDGET, was registered at Chatswood in 1928.
The birth of Margaret Beattie, daughter of JOHN BEATTY and ELIZABETH JANE HAMILTON, on 10 September 1859, was registered in Wollongong. The marriage of Margaret Beattie to Manchester-born coach builder and painter Samuel Robert Spencer on 24 September 1881 was registered at Paddington [he probably worked for Margaret's father]. Margaret and Samuel were the parents of:
The marriage of Margaret Spencer née Beattie to William Woof on 13 August 1898 at S Peter's church, Woolloomooloo, was registered in Sydney. Apparently Margaret was a widow, and her new husband, a woolbuyer, also predeceased he. The death of William Woof, his parents confusingly indexed as WILLIAM and MARGARET, was registered in Sydney in 1909.
The death of Margaret Beattie Woof formerly Spencer née Beattie, daughter of JOHN and ELIZA J, on 23 May 1909, was registered in Sydney.
The birth of John Alexander Knott Spencer, son of SAMUEL ROBERT SPENCER and MARGARET BEATTIE, on 7 July 1882, was registered in Sydney. After his widowed mother re-married in 1898 to woolbuyer William Woof, John was known as known post-1899 as John Alexander Knott Spencer-Woof.
John's marriage Ada Victoria Wilson was registered in Sydney in 1904. The birth of Ada Victoria Wilson, daughter of JOHN and MARGARET, had been registered at Tamworth in 1884.
John and Ada raised no children.
John has been described as a tailor at Bondi Junction. NSW Electoral Rolls shew John Alex Spencer-Woof [moulder] and Ada Victoria Spencer-Woof [home duties] at Montrose, Fig Tree Avenue, Randwick North, in 1930, 1933, 1937, 1943, 1949, 1954 and 1958.
The death of Ada Victoria Spencer-Woof née Wilson, '75 years Randwick', was registered in Sydney in 1960. The death of John Alexander Knott Spencer-Woof, aged 78, was registered in Sydney later in 1960.
The birth of Charles Victor Maher William Spencer, son of SAMUEL ROBERT SPENCER and MARGARET BEATTIE, on 15 May 1885, was registered in Sydney. After his widowed mother re-married in 1898 to woolbuyer William Woof, Charles was known as Charles Victor Maher William Spencer Woof.
Charles' marriage Violet Somers Turner was registered in Sydney in 1914. The birth of Violet, the only daughter of CHARLES JAMES TURNER and CAROLINE SHIELDS, on 27 April 1887 at Columbo (now Bemboka), was registered at Bega in 1887. A narrative description of the Turner family, part of Charles James Turner 1859-1941 & the Turner family of Sydney, Australia, by John Chappell (2009) is presented on http://cjturner.weebly.com/john-chappell-remembers.html.
Charles and Violet were the parents of:
NSW Electoral Rolls shew Charles Spencer Woof [poultry-farmer] and Violet Summers Woof [home duties] at Eureka, Berowra, in 1930, 1933, 1936 1937, 1943, 1949 and 1954, with Charles still listed there in 1958. Charles [no occupation] was listed at Nundle road, Tamworth, in 1963, near his son Alan.
