Early Generations

1. Alexander Connell (1789…1854) m. Jean/Janet Cunningham (1797…1841)

Alexander Connell, born in Ayrshire in September 1789, married Jean Cunningham in Kilmarnock Ayr in April 1817 'after proclamation'; Alexander was noted as 'in this parish' and Jean as 'in the parish of Kilmaurs'. On most of her children's baptisms her name was written as Janet. Jean had been born in July 1797. In the 1841 census, when the family was living at Grange Gate, Kilmarnock; Alexander's occupation then was noted as farm labourer. Alexander and Jean's known children were:
It may be that Alexander (born 1818) and Christina (born 1820) are shewn in the census of 6 June 1841 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire:

In the 1851 Census of Kilmarnock there is listed at West Main, Kilmarnock :

Alexander Connell 58 Wigstonshire, Withorn Farmer
Agnes (?) 55 . .
Inasmuch as Jean Cunningham died in 1841, one could imagine Alexander Connell, then aged about 48, perhaps remarrying.

1.1 Alexander Connell (1818…1865) m. Janet Gibson (1814…1894)

Alexander Connel(l), first-born of some fifteen children of ALEXANDER CONNELL and his wife JEAN CUNNINGHAM, was not with his parents at Grange Gate when the 1841 Census was taken, Alexander, born in December 1818 at Fenwick Ayr, married his wife Janet Gibson (baptised, or born, Blantyre, Larnarkshire, May 1814) at Kilmarnock in October 1842. Alexander and Janet's ten known children were:
By 1851 Alexander, Janet and their three children were living at Clark's Land, Kilmarnock:

Alexander Connell, son of ploughman ALEXANDER CONNELL and JEAN CONNELL née CUNNINGHAM (both deceased), banker married to Janet Gibson, died aged 47 years in April 1865 at 61 Portland Street, Kilmarnock, after three years of consumption. His will proven June 1865 noted him as "sometime teller in the Branch of the Ayrshire Banking Company now agent for the Branch of the Clydesdale Banking Company in Kilmarnock, spouse of Janet Gibson".

Janet Connell, daughter of journeyman dyer WALTER GIBSON and CATHERINE GIBSON née NAISMITH (both deceased) and widow of bank agent Alexander Connell, died aged 78 years at 61 Woodstock Street (West), Kilmarnock.

1.2  John Connell (c1825…?)

John Connell, fourth child of ALEXANDER CONNELL and his wife JEAN CUNNINGHAM, born March 1825, Kilmarnock, was apparently living with his parents at Grange Gate, Kilmarnock, when the 1841 Census was taken.

Perhaps this is the John Connell mentioned in the 1881 census at 133 George St, Paisley High Church, Renfrew SCT [a strong contraindication is the 1851 census which lists a John Connell, card cutter aged 26, in Barclay Street, Paisley High Church, Renfrew, together with his widowed mother Ann Connell aged 66: this John Connell would also have been born circa 1825, though his birthplace is noted as Paisley not Kilmaornock]:

1.3 Mary Ann Connell (1830…1899) m. James Paterson (c1827…1917)

Mary Ann Connell, daughter of ALEXANDER CONNELL and JEAN CUNNINGHAM born in Kilmarnock in October 1830, married James Paterson in Kilmarnock in February 1856. According to the census of 1851, James was a block printer aged 34, the son of ROBERT PATERSON and ISABELLA BROWN, and born at Campsie in Sterlingshire. [A Robert Paterson married a Christian Brown in Campsie on 5 December 1829.] Children of James and Mary Ann (all born at Kilmarnock) included:
The 1861, 1871 and 1881 censii shew the family lived at 23 West Netherton Street [Kilmarnock]. James was reputedly a miser, and when he died aged ?92 years, he willed his house "Connell" to his daughter Marion; this action apparently fuelled a rift in the family. Both James and Mary Ann are listed in the 1881 census, aged 54 and 49 years respectively. The 1881 census shews the family:

[A bachelor journeyman joiner James Paterson, 23, of Riccarton, married spinster farmer's daughter Annie-Orr Harvey on 11 June 1895 at Trees Farm, Riccarton, after Banns according to the rites of the Church of Scotland. This James noted his parents as master joiner JAMES PATERSON and MARION PATERSON née CUNNINGHAM (deceased). Annie, 24, of Trees Farm, Riccarton, was the daughter of tenant farmer ALEXANDER HARVEY and his wife MARY HARVEY née TANNOCK?. Witnesses at the wedding were Alexander C Paterson and Janet Harvey. Although similar in many aspects, this James is considered unlikely to have been the James born circa 1867.]

The death of Mary Ann Paterson née Connell aged 68 years was recorded at Kilmarnock in 1899. The death of a James Paterson aged 73 years, possibly the husband of Mary Ann, was recorded at Ayr in 1901.

1.3.1  Christiana P Paterson (1860…1931) m. Thomas Jack (1854/5…1921)

Spinster Christiana/Christina P Paterson and bachelor Thomas Jack (?"Bertie") married in December in Kilmarnock. Thomas Jack was noted as a journeyman tinsmith [he was later a plumber] aged 25 years. Christina was noted as a tailoress aged 20 years. Christina and Thomas's reputedly large family included::

Number 84 Campbell Street appears to have been a dual-tenancy, as the seven members of the Wilson family were also listed with that address. Neighbours at number 82 were Christina's parents James Paterson and Mary Ann Paterson (née Connell,) and Christina's younger sister Marion.

The Jack family in the 1901 census is shewn at 12 Rennie Street, Kilmarnock, Ayr SCT:

Ironmonger and plumber Thomas Jack, aged 66 years, son of farmer WILLIAM JACK and JESSIE JACK née CALDERHEAD [both deceased], died in January 1921 at 12 Rennie Street, Kilmarnock. It is likely that Thomas' parents were the Janet Calderhead and William Jack who married at New Monkland, Larnarkshire, in 1841, where a Thomas Jack was born in 1856.

Christina Jack née Paterson, widow of plumber Thomas Jack, died aged 71 years at 12 Rennie Street, Kilmarnock.

1.3.1.1  William Jack (1883…) m. Elizabeth Ritchie (…)

William Jack, born in 1883, the son of THOMAS JACK and his wife CHRISTINA PATERSON, married Elizabeth Ritchie in 1914; they had two children:

1.3.1.1  Jessie Calderhead Jack (1888…1964) m. John Muir Cook (1887…1971)
[Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland → Sydney, NSW]

Jessie Calderhead (or Calderwood) Jack, born at Kilmarnock AYR circa 1888, a daughter of CHRISTINA PATERSON and THOMAS ["Bertie"] JACK, married John Muir Cook at London Road, Kilmarnock on 4 September 1912. John, born 27 January 1887 at 15 Dean Street, Kilmarnock, was the son of engine fitter CHARLES COOK and his wife JEANIE MUIR, who had married at Kilmarnock on 17 December 1880.

At the 1912 wedding, Jessie was noted as a spinster aged 25 resident at 12 Rennie Street, Kilmarnock, the daughter of tinsmith THOMAS JACK and his wife CHRISTINA JACK née PATERSON. John was noted as a bachelor iron-turner aged 25 resident at 12 Henrietta Street, Kilmarnock, son of engine-fitter CHARLES COOK and his wife JANE COOK née MUIR. Marriage witnesses were Mary Connell Jack and John Muir Weir. John and Jessie had two children

John and Jessie had two children:

NSW Electoral Rolls shew John Muir Cook [iron turner] and Jessie Cook [home duties] at Hope street, Rosehill in 1930 and 1933, John Muir Cook [engineer] and Jessie at 4 Denison street, Parramatta in 1936, John and Jessie Calder Cook [home duties] with Christina Paterson Cook [milliner] at 28 Westbourne street, Drummoyne in 1943, John and Jessie at 10 Oates avenue, Gladesville in 1958 (John was still enrolled there in 1968].

The death of Jessie Calderhead Cook née Jack was registered at Ryde NSW in 1964. The death of John Muir Cook on 4 July 1971, aged 84, 'at Lottie Stewart Hospital, late of Parramatta, formerly of Gladesville', was noted in The Sydney Morning Herald two days later; the Parramatta registration noted his parents as CHARLES and JANE..

1.3.2  ♦ Marion Paterson (1867…1939) m. George Richardson (1871…1936)

Marion Paterson married George Richardson, a shoe merchant (boot cutter), in Kilmarnock AYR, November 1892. Marion was the daughter born April 1867 in Kilmarnock to JAMES PATERSON and MARY ANN CONNELL (or Connel), who had married locally on 29 February 1856. George and Marion had four children.
For further details of this family refer to Section 6.1.5.1.

2. Robert Keith (c1774…1853) m. Henrieta Haggart (1778…1868)

[The original information in this section came from Beverly Nicholson-Conde, September 2002, and was augmented by Penny Lewis in March 2003]
Robert Keith married Henrieta Haggart married on 19 December 1800 at Caputh, Perth SCT. Henrieta, born August 1778 at Lethendy and Kinloch, Perth, was the daughter of JA. HAGART [?James]. Robert and Henrieta were the parents of (at least):
It could be postulated that Robert Keith, husband of Henrietta Haggart, had younger siblings or cousins named Alexander and James. Robert and Henrieta Keith had two children baptised at Murroes, in 1807 and 1809. Alexander Keith and Agnes Pitkethlie, whose marriage was entered in parish registers at Scone 18 January 1807 and in Dundee on 4 February 1707, had five children baptised at Murroes soon after Robert and Henrieta:
Robert and Henrieta Keith's next child was baptised at Monifieth, in 1811. A few years later James Keith and Mary Duncan, married at Monifieth in April 1814, had three children baptised there. James and Mary Keith, born circa 1793 and 1788 respectively at Monifieth, were noted in June 1851 census as still living at Monifieth [the census also listed a Jane Keith, born at Monifieth circa 1791]. The known issue of James and Mary Keith, baptised at Monifieth, were:
Robert and Henrietta Keith were living with their daughter Hentietta at Monyfieth, Angus in the 1841 census:

Lindsay Williams of Wellington, New Zealand [lindsay.nz@gmail.com, 26 July 2012] identifies the James's Park area (where his maternal Norrie forebears dwelt in 1841) as Victoria St - Albert St - Arbroath Rd, Dundee and is seeking a history of the area. James's Park is mentioned in the Journals of the Hose of Lords, 1841 (Vol 73) among a long list of petitioners seeking relief from the Corn Laws ["Also,Upon reading the Petition of the Feuars and Proprietors of James Park and Maryfield, Dundee, County of Forfar, whose names are hereunto subscribed"] and more recently in the September 2008 "Dundee Local Plan Review, Site Planning Brief, Erskine Street Yard, Erskine Street, Stobswell, Dundee" [the Dundee City Council owned vacant Erskine Street Yard, circa 0.22ha in extent, is a brownfield site at the corner of Dura Street and Erskine Street within the Regeneration Area of Stobswell]:
The site is near to the Albert Street District Shopping Area of Stobswell which has excellent cross city transportation connections as well as being near to a large range of commercial and recreational amenities within the city centre, circa 1km to the south. <Map> The site is bounded to the east by Erskine Street, a traditional Victorian sandstone tenement street; to the south by the Erskine Street Garden Landscape Company premises; to the West by a new private housing development and to the north by Mosque and Dura Street. At the end of the 19th century the site use changed from being part of the greenspace of James's Park into industrial premises and remained so into the 1990s as a coal depot. In recent times the yard was purchased by Tayside Regional Council for the now abandoned North East Arterial road proposals. The Dundee Local Plan Review 2005 identifies the site as 'H31' for 'Brownfield Housing Proposals'.

  • ELIZIE MELDRUM SYME (born and baptised October 1810 to Walter Syme and Isabel Lindsay, Kilmany) and
  • MARY SIME (born circa 1813, Cupar FIF, died 1890; married George Richardson, Forgan FIF, 1834).

Walter and Isobella Syme were living in Leuchars Village, Dundee, Angus at the time of the 1841 census:

Walter Syme 63 Labourer Y 1788

The absence in the surviving 1851 census record of entries identifiable as either the Isobella or Walter Sime located at Leuchars Village in 1841 suggests they were deceased by that 1851. The death of a Walter? Sime on 8 June 1843, and burial on 11 June 1843, was entered in the Leuchars registers in 1843.

The 1841 census suggests Isobella and Walter Syme of Leuchars Village were born c1770 and c1778 respectively. Given Isobella appears to have been some years older that Walter in it is not unreasonable to conjecture that she had been previously married.

Note though that the Extract from the Old Parish Register for the Dundee (St Peter Parish), Scotland - Burials 1837 - 1856 on Arlene's Lists, http://www.monikie.org.uk/ah-saintpeter.htm [accessed 01jul2012], has the Dundee burials of a Liff-born Isabel Sime née McImrie on 8 July 1838, aged 61 (born about 1777), the wife of Walter Sime, and of Dould-born labourer Walker [Walter?] Sime on 11 July 1849, aged 69 (born about 1780).

Previous cojectures included the possibilities that Walter was baptised in Forgan parish, Fife, (just 8km NNW of Leuchars ), either baptised 22 May 1765 the son of William Syme and Sussanna Chrightoun or baptised 24 April 1768 the son of Walter Syme and Margaret Ramsay. It was also thought possible that he was baptised 16 March 1780 at Dowally (in the Strathtay district, Perthshire) the son of James Sim and Christan Duff, or 17 February 1784 at Dowally the son of William Sim and Margrat Cameron. Robert Macfarlane eMailed [23may2012] re James Sim and Christian Duff :

.
… my great great great grandfather Donald Mcfarlane married Margaret Sim in Dowally in 1787 - I believe her parents were James Sim & Christian Duff (cannot prove 100% at this moment). I know Margaret had a brother Walter. The problem I have is that I have traced four potential Margaret Sim born between 1760 and 1770, and not sure which married Donald. Any information you have on this Sim family would be appreciated..

4.1  ♦ Mary Sime (c1813…1890) m. George Richardson (1812…1902)

Mary Sime, daughter of WALTER SIME and his wife ISABELLA LINDSAY, born at Cupar FIF circa 1813, married George Richardson, son of JOHN RICHARDSON and his wife JANE SWAN, on 6 June 1834 at Forgan FIF. George and Mary were the parents of some eleven children. For further details of their family refer to Section 6.1 below.

5.  ♦ David Swan (c1760…1842) m. Margaret Ferguson (…)

David Swan and Margaret Ferguson were the parents of:

  • JANE SWAN (born circa 1783; died 1860, Balmerino, Fife; married John Richardson, Balmerino, 1812).
It appears David and Margaret were deceased by 1851. The Fife Family History Society notes the Balmerino burial: "SWAN. DAVID: agricultural labourer at Little Inch for 57 yrs, having entered service of Mr Samuel Johnston in 1784; 11 May 1842 (82) FH May 26
A Da
1842."
. vid Swan (not necessarily the one above) was the father of:
  • MARY SWAN (baptised in 1781 at Balmerino, Fife),
  • JAMES SWAN (baptised in 1797 at Balmerino).

Note 1
: probably unrelated, a David Swan had married a Margaret Ferguson at Hamilton, Larnarkshire, on 28 February 1790. A David Swan had apparently been born about 1765 at Hamilton, and a Margaret Ferguson about 1769 at Hamilton. A Thomas Swan married a Janet Rae at Hamilton on 16 April 1818.

5.1  ♦ Jane Swan (c1783…1860) m. John Richardson (…1851-58)

Jane Swan, daughter of DAVID SWAN and his wife MARGARET FERGUSON, married John Richardson on 22 March 1812 at Balmerino, Fife; Jane would have been approximately 29 years old at the time. Jane, who bore John five known children, died at Balmerino in March 1860. For further details of this family refer to Section 6 following.

6. John Richardson (c1781…1851-1858) m.(1812) Jane/Jean Swan (c1783/5…1860)

John Richardson, born Lochmaben, Dumfries, about 1781, said to be a salmon fisher, married Jean Swan on 22 March 1812 at Balmerino, Fife, Scotland. They were the parents of:
  • GEORGE RICHARDSON (born or baptised July 1812, Balmerino, died 1902, Leuchars Village; married Mary Sime, Forgan FIF, 1834, withperhaps eleven issue),
  • *HELEN RICHARDSON (born or baptised November 1813, Balmerino),
  • *BENJAMIN RICHARDSON (born or baptised February 1815, Balmerino),
  • *JOHN RICHARDSON (born or baptised November 1816, Balmerino),
  • *DAVID RICHARDSON (born or baptised October 1818, Balmerino) and

Unfortunately the enumerated returns for Balmerino of the 1841 census were lost in transit to Edinburgh.

It is possible that John Richardson was the son born or baptised to James Richardson and Jean Mundall at Lochmaben on 3 January 1779 ; James Richardson had married Jean Mundle at Lochmaben on 15 December 1774.

John Richardson was deceased and Jean Richardson née Swan alive in October 1857 when their son Benjamin was married at Kemback FIF.

Jane Richardson née Swan died aged 76 years in March 1860 at Balmerino. Her parents were noted as Agricultural labourer DAVID SWAN and — SWAN née FERGUSON, both deceased, by the informant, her son Benjamin Richardson.

6.1.5  David Richardson (c1844…1911) m. Jane Smith (c1843…1873)

According to the will of William Pride?, David Richardson was a clergyman and had no family. The Scottish census of 7-8 April 1861 shews Leuchars-born David Richardson, aged 17, as an apprentice blacksmith and servant to William Grahame (farmer and blacksmith) in Kirkto, Cults, Fife. He later married, had at least three children, was bereaved, eventually became a clergyman and seems to have ended his days in the Dundee lunatic asylum. David's elder brother John seems, in the 1851 census, to have been a apprentice blacksmith to master James Cunningham in Leuchars village, Fife; likewise, brother Walter was a blacksmith.

David Richardson, 22, bachelor journeyman blacksmith of Albert Street Dundee, son of farm servant George RICHARDSON and his wife MARY née SIME, married Jane Smith, 24, spinster domestic servant of Bell Street Dundee, daughter of stone mason JAMES SMITH and his wife MARY née JUSTICE (deceased), on 2 January 1867 at Meadow Place, Dundee, after banns according to the forms of the Catholic Apostolic Church, Dundee, Angusi. The marriage, before Minister John Rankin, was witnesses by Richard D Smith and Isabella Richardson.

The death of Margaret Richardson née Nicholson, wife or boot factory manager William Richardson, occurred 24 February 1913 at Burntisland.

The death of William Richardson, retired shoe pattern maker and widower of Margaret Nicholson, occurred 10 March 1915 at Burntisland.

William and Margaret were buried together, their headstone inscription appearing to read as follows:
In Memory of MARGARET NICHOLSON BELOVED WIFE OF WILLIAM RICHARDSON WHO DIED ON 14th FEBY 1914 AGED 64 YEARS ALSO THE ABOVE WILLIAM RICHARDSON LATE OF KILMARNOCK WHO DIED ON 29th MARCH 1918 AGED 66 YEARS - TILL WE MEET
In the source photograph from which the inscription was taken, most numbers were slightly indistinct, excepting the “191”s. Thus the birth and death dates for this couple interpreted from the photograph may be erroneous and definitely different from official sources. The headstone was for what appears to be a double plot in the cemetery, and there is much free space on the stone for later inscription. A small white stone cross is adjacent and appears related. Location is unknown.

George Richardson died in February 1936. An obituary in The Kilmarnock ?, dated February 22 1936, read:
DEATH OF MR GEO. RICHARDSON
BOOT MERCHANT.
We regret to announce the death of Mr George Richardson, boot and shoe merchant, Duke Street, which occurred at his residence, 21 Glebe Road, Kilmarnock, on Thursday. For a considerable time Mr Richardson had been in an unsatisfactory state of health, having been subject to periodic heart attacks, but he had made a remarkably good recovery, and was moving about much as usual this week. A recurrence of his trouble brought his end somewhat suddenly and unexpectedly.

Mr Richardson was a native of Angus, but came to Kilmarnock with his parents as a youth, his father having been for a long period one of the foremen in Messrs Clark & Sons' Shoe Factory, Titchfield Street. Entering the service of the firm, Mr Richardson was soon placed in charge of one of its retail shops, and subsequently he became a traveller for Messrs Kellie & McLeish, Ltd., boot and shoe manufacturers, Kilmaurs, in which Messrs Clark & Sons had certain interests. While still travelling, Mr Richardson acquired on his own account the boot and shoe business of the late Mr Torrance, Portland Street, and subsequently he removed to Duke Street. Apart from business Mr Richardson was well known in Masonic and musical circles. He was an enthusiastic Freemason, his Mother Lodge being St. Marnock's No. 100, and he had held nearly all the principal offices, including that of Right Worshipful Master. He was an accomplished worker of degrees, and he rendered very valuable musical service to the craft. An excellent bass vocalist, Mr Richardson took a leading part in the harmony meetings and was always a host in himself. Many years ago he frequently appeared on the concert platform, being always ready to give his services freely and wholeheartedly on behalf of any deserving or charitable institution or cause. For many years he was an esteemed member of the Laigh Kirk choir. He acted for a time as organist and choirmaster in Kilmaurs Parish Church and later in Symington Norman Church. Mr Richardson, who was in the 65th year of his age, is survived by his wife and two sons and two daughters, all of them married. The two sons reside at Prestwick, while one of the daughters is in England and the other in Australia. To them all we offer an expression of heartfelt sympathy in their sore bereavement.

The funeral of Mr Richardson will take place this afternoon and will be of a public character.

The death of Marion Richardson née Paterson, widow of shoe merchant George Richardson, occurred on 8th September 1939 at Prestwick, Ayr, aged 72 years.

Mary Ann ("Molly"), spinster shop assistant, and William Henry Kay, bachelor tailor and bandsman, were married at the bride's residence at 21 Glebe Street, Kilmarnock in February 1918; witnesses were P N McCracken and Maggie N Richardson. William Henry Kay ("Bill"), born April 1886 at New Lambton NSW, was the son of master cabinetmaker JEREMIAH JAMES KAY and his wife AMELIA MILLICENT HUMPHRIES. At the time of his wedding Bill was serving with the 25th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Forces, stationed at Warminster WLS. Bill and Molly Kay had two children:

Bill and Molly travelled to Australia aboard the Prince Ludwick in 1919 with their infant son George while Bill was still in uniform. Bill was re-employed by the Australian Post Office and worked for them at Moree. Molly, unaccustomed to the the isolation and wilting summer heat of north-western New South Wales, later repatriated to Scotland with their Australian-born daughter Marion and young George. From Australia, Bill persuaded Molly to try once more to adapt to the Australian climate, and she and the children returned to Australia aboard the Themistocles in early 1924.

William Henry Kay died in May 1955 at Concord NSW; Molly remained at their house at 2 Pott Street, Kingsgrove NSW until her death in January 1962.
