2 ♦ Richard Outon (1695…) m. Katherine Tripp (…)
[West Wittering and Chichester, West Sussex]
Note: Almost all of the information on this Outon/Oughton lineage, excepting some information on George Voller Outon, his descendants and some minor items in other places, has been kindly contributed (July 2005) by Alan R. Outen, 14 Fairfax Close, Clifton, Shefford Beds, SG17 5RH, England, who has extensively researched the Outon name (especially the male descent lines).
Richard Outon, baptised June 1695 at West Wittering, West Sussex , is thought by some to be one of seven children of ROBERT OUTEN and AMY LIGHT who married at West Thorney, West Sussex, on 3 June 1683 [note: Alan Outen is not convinced of Robert and Amy being Richard’s parents, nor by their association with another six children].
Richard [Outten] married Katherine Tripp [Kathren] at St Martin’s, Chichester on 8 February 1714/15 ; they were the parents of five children:
- RICHARD OUGHTEN (baptised November 1717 at West Wittering, West Sussex [of whom there has been no further trace]),
- CATHERINE OUTON (baptised November 1719 at West Wittering; as Catharine Oughton married John Hutchins at St Martin’s, Chichester on 8 November 1741, then William Starling),
- MARY OUTON (baptised February 1722 or June 1723, West Wittering),
- GEORGE OUTON (baptised 26 March 1730, West Wittering; at his marriage to Ann Finch or Firth at St Peter the Great Chichester on 27 January 1760 George was described as farmer of Rumboldswhyke age 30; no issue; buried 8 January 1794, Rumboldswyke, Sussex, Will proved 5 February 1794 benefiting his surviving nephews) and
- PIERCE OUTON (the youngest, baptised November 1733 at West Wittering; on 8 December 1751 married Ann Terry; as a widower he remarried on 12 May 1767 at Pagham, West Sussex to Jean or Jenny Hollis (baptised 12 May 1734)).
Two other marriages at St Martin’s, Chichester contemporary to Richard’s were those of a Sarah Oughten to Hen. Ide on 21 July 1720 and a Mary Oughten to John Hebberdeen on 3 October 1723.
2.1 ♦ Pierce Outon (1733…) m1. Ann Terry (…1764); m2. Jean/Jenny Hollis (1734…)
[West Wittering and Pagham, West Sussex]
Pierce Outon, baptised November 1733 at West Wittering, West Sussex, was the youngest of five children of RICHARD OUTON and KATHERINE TRIPP. On 8 December 1751 Pierce married Ann Terry at Donnington, Sussex; they had six children:
- RICHARD OUTON (baptised September 1753, West Wittering; died in 1828 at Chichester; married Sarah Pratt in on October 1778 at Chichester with three issue; married Catherine Pratt in 1796, with one issue),
- ANN OUTON (baptised January 1756 at West Wittering – was she the mother of Richard Owton baptised 31 December 1778 at St Peter the Great, Chichester?)
- KATHERINE OUTON (baptised December 1757 at West Wittering; married William Parker on 2 February 1779 in South Berstead, West Sussex),
- MARY OUTON (baptised December 1759 at West Wittering; married William Sherlock on 6 March 1796),
- BETT OUTON (baptised December 1761 at West Wittering) and
- GEORGE PIERCE OUTON (baptised September 1764; perhaps deceased by 1788 (not mentioned in Uncle George’s 1788 Will)).
A widower, Pearce Oughton remarried on 13 or 30 July 1767 at Pagham, West Sussex to Jean or Jenny Hollis (baptised 12 May 1734 at Pagham, to WILLIAM and ELIZABETH HOLLIS), with issue:
- WILLIAM HOLLIS OUTON (baptised July 1768, Pagham, W Sussex; died in 1844 aged 75, leaving a Will; married twice, firstly aged about 43 to Mary Allen on 28 July 1811 at St Mary, Portsea, secondly aged about 53 to Martha Allen (possibly his deceased wife’s sister) on 27 October 1821 with three issue (Charles Allen Outon (baptised March 1823, Portsmouth), Caroline Outon and Mary Ann Outon)).
2.1.1 ♦ Richard Outon (1753…1828) m1. Sarah Pratt (c1755…1794); m2. Catherine Pratt (c1776…1850)
[West Wittering and Chichester, West Sussex; South Hayling and Portsmouth, Hampshire]
Richard Outon, baptised September 1753 at West Wittering; West Sussex, the son of PIERCE OUTON and ANN TERRY, married Sarah Pratt at the church of St Peter the Less in Chichester, West Sussex, on 2 October 1778. It is possible that Sarah was the Sarah Pratt, daughter of JOHN and EDITH PRATT, baptised at West Dean Near Chichester, Sussex, on 2 February 1755 [a postulation inconclusively enhanced by the ‘Hale’ name given to Richard’s fourth child being shared by Pratt contemporaries in West Dean]. Richard and Sarah had three children:
- RICHARD GATES OUTON (born about 1779; died before 1840; married twice, firstly on 22 November 1802 at Rumboldswhyke to Ann Hammond (1781?…1809), two issue (Caroline, 1803 and Sophia, 1805), then on 3 March 1813 at St Saviour Southwark to Sarah Ade (born 1 April 1791, Uckfield, died 1866, Brighton, aged 76 years), one issue (Richard Gasson Outon, 1814)),
- JAMES OUTON (born about 1781; married Lydia Benham (1783…) on 12 December 1803 at Rumboldswhyke; aged 21 years gent of Rumboldswhyke at marriage; two issue (Susan Eliza, 1805 and Walter, 1806)) and
- GEORGE VOLLER OUTON (born on 29 March 1782 and christened on 22 September 1789 at South Hayling, Hampshire (only a couple of miles west on West Wittering, across Chichester Harbour); died Southsea 1854; married Sophia Searly at Portsea in 1803 with four known issue; married Magdalene Dunbar in 1818 in London with two issue).
Sarah Outon née Pratt died on 14 March 1794 and was buried on the 20th instant.
On 25 July 1796 at St Thomas’ church in Portsmouth, Richard married Catherine Pratt, with one issue resulting:
- CHARLES HALE OUTON (baptised on 12 October 1797, Rumboldwhyke).
The Registry of the Bishop of Winchester's Hampshire Allegations for Marriage Licences, 1689-1837, p82, has:
"Outon, Richard, of Rumbold's Wyke, co. Sussex, gent., w., & Catherine Pratt, of Portsea, a minor, with c.of her f., William Pratt, at P., 25 July, 1796."
[There were also two Voller baptisms recorded at South Hayling in the early 1800s: James Voller, baptised 23 December 1810 to John and Mary, and William, born 29 July 1812, baptised 9 August 1812 to John and Mary].
Richard Outon died in 1828 at Chichester aged 77 years and was buried on 23 February 1828 at Rumboldwhyke on the then south-eastern outskirts of Chichester. Catherine Outon née Pratt died aged 74 years in 1850 and was buried on 3 April 1850 at Rumboldwhyke.
2.1.1.1 ♦ Richard Gates Outon (c1779…1840-) m1. Ann Caroline Hammond (1781?…1809); m2. Sarah Ade (1791…1866)
[Rumboldswhyke, Southwark]
Ann Hammond's middle name from Joy Margery Wills' Genealogy WebSite [accessed 28dec2014]
Richard Gates Outon, born about 1779, son of RICHARD OUTON and SARAH PRATT, married twice, firstly on 22 November 1802 at Rumboldswhyke to Ann Hammond (Joy Margery Wills names her as Ann Caroline Hammond). Ann had been born about 1781. At the time of his marriage Richard was described as “age 21yrs gent of Rumboldswhyke”. Richard and Ann had two issue:
- CAROLINE OUTON (baptised 24 March 1803, Rumboldswhyke; married Francis Wills on 23 April 1840 at Chichester, Sussex, with three issue) and
- SOPHIA OUTON (baptised 28 January 1805, Rumboldswhyke; died 1878; married William Lock(e)year on 16 January 1827 at Arundel, six known issue).
- Ann Outon née Hammond was buried on 8 September 1809 at Rumboldswhyke.
Richard, a widower, of Croydon, Surrey, subsequently married spinster Sarah Ade (born April 1791, Uckfield) on 11 March 1813 at St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey
[from Pallot’s Marriage Index].
Richard and Sarah were the parents of:
- RICHARD GASSON OUTON (born 1814, Arlington; died in 4Q1889 at Brighton, aged 75 years; married on 25 January 1834 at Gretna Hall, Dumfries-shire, Scotland, and on 3 February 1834 at St Pancras Old Church, London, to Elizabeth Smith (born Brighton circa 1813, daughter of John Smith, for many years the French consul at Brighton; died 19 June 1861); five issue).
Richard Gates Outon, a military officer, died before 1840:
- The 1851 census shews Sarah Outon with her married son’s house in Alfriston (near Seaford) Sussex::

Charles and Ellen, who appear to have emigrated to Dublin about 1885-6, had three issue:
- JOHN CHARLES OUTON (born circa 1885, Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, England [probably the John Charles Outon whose birth on 5 September 1884 was registered 4q1884 at Potterspury, Northants., about 5km north-west of Wolverton]; emigrated with his parents to Co Dublin, Ireland while an infant; appears worked in Pennsylvania in 1910 and to have emigrated arriving Nova Scotia in 1923; travelled several times to the U.S.A.; died 29 August 1966, New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada; married Viola Maud Tweed in Manitoba in 1923, with issue),

- CECIL ARTHUR OUTON (born circa 1897, Co Dublin, Ireland [seemingly 12 September 1896, in Dublin South, though registration is in Dublin South registers of 3Q1893]; alive in 1911; apparently died 12 September 1970, age 73, Conway, Caernarvonshire, Wales).

The census shews Charles and Ellen had completed 27 years of marriage, with three issue born alive, all still living. All spoke English. |
Charles Brook Outon repatriated to England and died 26 October 1925, aged 65, at Southsea, Hampshire, his Will granted Probate:

2.1.1.1.3.1.1.1 John Charles Outon (c1884…1925) m. Viola Maude Tweed (1892…1983)
[Wolverton, Buckinghamshire → Dublin, Ireland → Canada and U.S.
→ New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada]
-
John Charles Outon, born circa 1885, Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, England [probably the John Charles Outon whose birth was registered 4q1884 at Potterspury, Northants., about 5½ km north-west of Wolverton], son of CHARLES BROOK OUTON and his wife ELLEN WILLIAMS, John emigrated with his parents to Co Dublin, Ireland while an infant: the 1901 Irish census shews Ellen Outon and her children at 'house 27', Inchicore Road N. Side, New Kilmainham, Co Dublin, Ireland: John was noted as a 'Loco Engineers Apprentice'.
John was noted as single in 1910 and 1923 and as married in 1946, 1947, 1948, 1950 and 1957. John married Viola Maud Tweed on 6 November 1923 at Killarney, Manitoba, Canada. Viola, born 10 July 1892 at Killarney, was a daughter of WILLIAM ERRINGTON TWEED and ALVINA LORETTA TRELEAVEN [the latter noted as ALMA LOUISA TWEED in 1916 census at Camp Hughes, Manitoba]. John and Viola had at least one child:
- EVELYN OUTON (believed to have been born at Inkster, Michigan, where the family lived awhile before moving to California; married, with issue including John Charles Brook Claxton [per eMails, dec2014]).
U.S., U.K. and Canadian records (especially shipping) are confounding, and clerks may have confused on-file histories of two John Charles Outons.
The 1910 US Census [enumerated 15-16 August?] shew a John C Outon, an alien, aged 25, single, a lodger, of English birth and descent, a machinist at 'P. R.R. shop', residing at 423, 6 Avenue, Altoona Ward 8, Blair, Pennsylvania. 'P.R.R.' is presumably the Pennsylvania Rail Road. A John Charles Outon, noted as an English national aged 25, single, a locomotive engineer, arrived in New York on 25 August 1910, ex Queenstown, Ireland, on 18 August 1910, in the Teutonic; his last permanent residence was noted as 'America, Altoona', a 'Non Immigrant Alien', his final destination as 'Pa., Altoona' and his closest relative in country of origin as “Father Mr C V Outon, Chisham House Nelson ~~ Ryde”. [ancestry.com's index has this John Charles Outon born at Bradford, [Yorkshire West Riding] England, some 200km west-nor'west from Wolverton. The original document linked from the index merely shews British nationality, English race or people.]
It appears John emigrated 3rd Class to Canada in the Pittsburgh, arriving Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 19 August 1923, ex Southsea, England: his was noted as aged 37, birthplace Wolverton, marital status single, occupation farm labourer, citizenship British, religion CoE, destined to the Canadian Harvesting Scheme, his permanency uncertain. He is noted as never having lived in Canada.
A manifest dated 30 November 1946 at the port of Blaine, Washington, shows John Charles Outon, born '9/5/86' [5 September 1886] at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, age 60, retired, a Canadian citizen of English race, last permanent residence 1718 South Van Ness, Santa Ana, California, wishing to enter the United States, accompanied by his wife Maude, to his 'home at Santa Ana, Calif.' John noted that he had never been arrested, deported or excluded from admission to the U.S., that he had been in the U.S. from '1923 until Nov. 6, 1946 Calif. & Mich.' and as his 'nearest relative or friend in country whence applicant came' as “brthr-in-law: Lorne Tweed; Canada Trust; Vanc. BC'. John was said to be 5' 10", fair complexion, grey hair and blue eyes. The card was stamped “Deferred”. John and Maud had arrived by 'auto'.
A Non-Resident Alien's Border Crossing Identification Card has John arriving at Blaine, Washington, on 29 May 1947. This Card has John, aged 60, retired, born in England on '9/5/86' [5 September 1886], last permanent residence 1715 S. Van Ness, Santa Ana, California, married to Maud or Viola (residing 2125 Gilley Avenue, Burnaby, British Columbia), and coming to “reside permanent”. The card was stamped “Debarred Immigrant”, and noted under 'Ever in U.S.' as “[from] 1907 to 11/6/1946 [6 November 1946] except temp visits to Canada and Mexico”, and to 'Ever arrested and deported, or excluded from admission', “no”. He was 5' 10", med. complexion, grey hair, blue eyes and heavy build. He had previously been examined at Blanie on 30 November 1946. He arrived by foot.
A manifest dated 9 April 1948 at Blaine, Washington, notes John Charles Outon, parole, born '9/5/86' [5 September 1886] at Wolverton, England, age 50, residence 2125 Gilley Avenue, Burnaby, British Columbia, married (to Viola Maud of the same address), retired, intending a one-day visit to the National Bank, Bellingham, Washington State; he was 5' 10", medium complexion, grey hair, blue eyes and heavy build. He had previously been examined at Blaine on 30 November 1946. The manifest also noted that John had landed at New York on 10 August 1910 in the White Star Line's SS Teutonic. The card was stamped “Parole”, and noted under 'Ever in U.S.' as “[from] 1907 to 11/6/1946 except temp visits to Canada”, and to 'Ever arrested and deported, or excluded from admission', “no” and “yes”.
Another Non-Resident Alien's Border Crossing Identification Card, at Blaine, Washington, on 19 June 1950, has John, retired, of 2125 Gilley Avenue, Burnaby, British Columbia, born on 5 September 1884 at Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, England, married, Canadian, height 5' 10¼", weight 230 lbs., complexion fair, hair grey, eyes blue, arriving for pleasure.
UK Incoming Passenger Lists shew John C Outon, born 5 September 1984, married, retired, a Canadian citizen, resident of Canada, arrived at Southampton, U.K, on 11 September 1857 in the United States, from New York, intending a visit of six weeks at 460 Babbacombe Rd., Devon, England [then the home of his first cousin Mary Brook Outon].
John Charles Outon died on 29 August 1966 at New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, aged 81.
Viola Maude Outon née Tweed died on 20 December 1983 at New Westminster, British Columbia.
Another John Charles Outon, principal residence Garden City Michigan, born 5 September 1886 at Laramie, Wyoming, employed by New York Central Railway in Detroit, Michigan, registered in the US for the World War Two Draft.
2.1.1.1.3.1.2 Emmanuel Outon (1864…1931) m. Annie Julia — (c1867…1935)
[Brighton, Sussex → (Madras & Bombay) India → Torquay, Devon]
-
Robert Bulford (per eMail, 23dec2014) located the Madras baptism and 1922 repatriation details of Emmanuel Outon.
The birth of Emmanuel Outon, born 29 June 1863 according to an Indian record, but more likely 29 June 1864, was registered at Brighton, Sussex in 3Q1884: he was a son of CHARLES RICHARD SMITH OUTON and his wife MARY ELIZABETH BROOK. Emanuel was baptised, aged 28, at Madras, Madras, India, on 20 March 1892.
Emmanuel married Annie Julia —, possibly in India soon after the aforementioned baptism. Emmanuel, accompanied by his wife and daughter, repatriated to live in England in early May 1922, departing India at Bombay and disembarking at Plymouth aboard the P&O Liner Egypt (berthed in London on 5 May 1922).
It is likely that the daughter of Emmanuel and Annie was:
- MARY BROOK OUTON (born 17 November 1903 in Madras, India; death registered at Torbay, Devon, in March 1985; apparently never married).
- Emmanuel Outon died on 7 April 1931 at Torquay, Devon, aged 66, his death registered at Newton Abbot, Devon. His Will was granted Probate:
- Outon Emanuel of Stanmore Babbacombe-road Torquay died 7 April 1931 Probate Exeter 1 August to Annie Julia Outon widow and Mary Brook Outon spinster Effects £92 10s.
-
Annie Julia Outon died 16 May 1935, aged 68, her death registered at Newton Abbot, Devon. Her Will granted Probate:
- Outon Annie Julia of Stanmore Babbacombe-road Torquay died 16 May 1935 Probate Exeter 18 July to Mary Brook Outon spinster Effects £4430 4s. 7d.

[Madras, India → Torquay, Devon, England]
-
Mary Brook Outon, born 17 November 1903 in Madras, India, was the only known child of EMMANUEL OUTON and his wife ANNIE JULIA —. Emmanuel, accompanied by his wife and daughter, repatriated to live in England in early May 1922, departing India at Bombay and disembarking at Plymouth aboard the P&O liner Egypt (berthed in London on 5 May 1922).
Miss Mary B Outon, aged 35, of no occupation, born in Madras, India, a resident of Torquay, England, sailed ftom Southampton, England, to New York, New York, arriving on 17 July 1939 aboard the Queen Mary, according to ancestry.com's index to visit her friend J C Outon. Mary's first cousin John Charles Outon arrived at Southampton, U.K, on 11 September 1857 in the United States, from New York, intending a visit of six weeks at 460 Babbacombe Rd., Devon, England: he was obviously visiting Mary.
Mary never married. The death of Mary Brook Outon aged 81, born 17 November 1903, was registered at Torbay, Devon, on 26 March 1985. The London Gazette of 11 Aprtl 1985 (p5114) advised:

2.1.1.2 James Outon (c1781…); m. Lydia Benham (1783…)
[Rumboldswhyke, Southwark]
James Outon, born about 1781, second son of RICHARD OUTON and SARAH PRATT, married 20 year old Lydia Benham of New Fishbourne, West Sussex. Lydia had been born in 1783 and baptised on 6 November 1783 at St Olave’s, Chichester. James and Lydia had two issue:
- SUSAN ELIZA OUTON (born 12 September 1804; baptised 11 August 1805 at New Fishbourn) and

2.1.1.3 ♦ George Voller Outon (1782
1854) m. Sophia Margaret Searly (1778
1813); m2. Magdalene Dunbar (1791…1856)
[Alverstoke,
South Hayling and Portsea, Hampshire]
I am indebted to Margaret Crispin of Deception Bay, Queensland, for key assistance in comprehending the families of George Voller Oughton especially regarding Frederick Dunbar Oughton, George Henry Seymour and the 1831 baptismal and later details of Thomas Kidd. Robert Bulford and his cousin Phillip Barrow, each of south-east Queensland, sourced key detail, regarding Thomas Kidd baptised 1831, particulary Tasmanian, and of Thomas' children Henry and Sophia. Information provided by Kellie-Ann Weber and others is also gratefully acknowledged.
George Voller Outon married Sophia Searly on
5 July 1803 at St Marys, Portsea, Hampshire. Sophia was noted as a spinster
of Alverstoke parish while George was a bachelor from H.M.S. Amazon;
the marriage was witnessed by James Searley and Sarah Searley. George, son of
RICHARD and SARAH OUTON, was born March 1782 and christened on 22 September
1789 at South Hayling, Hampshire. Sophia,
baptised in August 1778 at Alverstoke, Hampshire, daughter of EDWARD SEARLY
and his wife MARY LITTLEFIELD. The Registry of the Bishop of Winchester's Hampshire Allegations for Marriage Licences, 1689-1837, p82, has:
Outon, George-Voller, of H. M. S. Amazon, captain's clerk, 21, b., & Sophia Searley, of Portsea, 21, sp., at P., 5 July, 1803."[George's shipmate James Ledger
married Ann Whitmore at St Marys three days later. The Amazon, possibly
launched at Yarmouth in April 1761, was briefly in port.]
Probably unrelated, widower Samuel Hill married widow Mary Littlefield at St
Mary's, Portsea, by banns on 1 August 1798; both were of that parish and made
their marks in the register, witnessed by William Whitehat and Mary Earley [sic]
(her mark).
George and Sophia
were the parents of:
- GEORGE EDWARD OUTON (born/baptised April 1804, Portsea Hants.; died 4 October 1832, Port Royal, British West Indies [Jamaica]),
- SOPHIA MATILDA OUTON (baptised June 1808, Holy Trinity, Exeter, Devon; married Dr John Kidd, RN,
at St Leonards, Hythe, Kent, on 15 July 1829, with whom she emigrated to Melbourne
VIC AUS in 1851, with at least five children; disappeared (presumably died)
in 1853 in the Madagascar ex Melbourne for London),
- SIDNEY OUTON (born May
1809, baptised June 1809, St Johns, Portsea, Hampshire) and
- HENRY OUTON (born December
1811, baptised February 1812, St Johns, Portsea).
The dispatches and letters of Vice Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson indicate Nelson directly appointed George Voller Oughton* to be Purser of the Bittern in 1805:TO WILLIAM MARSDEN, ESQ., ADMIRALTY.
Victory, at Sea, 4th April, 1805.
Sir, In consequence of His Majesty's Sloop Childers not having joined the Fleet, and being desirous that the Renown and Convoy from Gibraltar should not be detained a moment, I have given a Commisson to Captain Corbet of the Bittern, to be Captain of the Amphitrite in the room of Sir William Bolton, and appointed the Purser of the Bittern also to that Frigate ; I have likewise given a Commission [to Lieutenant] Louis, who I had appointed to supersede Sir William Bolton in the Childers, to be Commander of the Bittern, and appointed Mr. George Voller Oughton (who was intended to supersede the Purser of the Childers) to be Purser of the Bittern ; and herewith transmit you copies of the said two Commissions and Warrants, which I request you will be so good as lay before the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty for their information, and move their Lordships to confirm the respective appointments. I am extremely concerned that the Childers has not joined, but trust their Lordships will approve of the arrangements I have made in consequence, and of the motives for not detaining the Renown and their public dispatches. I am, Sir, your most obedient, humble servant,
Nelson And Bronte.
• George was not confirmed as Purser until December 1807. Nelson's fleets were at the time engaging Napoleon and were all victualled for six months. Horatio Nelson, Duke of Bronte [King Ferdinand I of Sicily gave Nelson the newly created Dukedom of Bronté below Mount Etna in Sicily, in perpetual property, on 13 August 1799] died at Cape Trafalgar, Spain, on 21 October 1805 (aged 47).
Sophia Margaret Outon née Searley [Sophia wife of Geo Voller Outen] died a Portsea 16 months after the birth of her fourth child, Henry, and was buried on 13 April 1813 at St Mary's, Alverstoke.
George remarried at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, in February 1818; his second wife was Magdalene Dunbar, eldest daughter of the late ALEXANDER DUNBAR of Nairn, as noted in Blackwood's April 1818 Edinburgh Magazine, Vol. 3, p118, “Register.– Births and Marriages”. George Voller Oughton, a widower, signed the Bishop of London's Marriage Bond on 27 February 1818, and he and spinster Magdalen Dunbar, both of 'this' parish, were duly married by Licence in the Church of St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, Middlesex, by curate John Tillotson, as witnessed by James Tweedale and Margt Tweedale: all parties signed the register. Margaret Tweeddale was known to be a 'cousin' of Duncan Dunbar II.
The London Times of 3 March 1818 had also noted: MARRIED. … At St. Martin in the Fields, G. V. Oughton, Esq. to Magdalen, eldest daughter of the late Alexander Dunbar, of Nairn, N. B.
Rob Bulford [eMail, jul2014] located a report in the Caledonian Mercury, Thursday 14 September 1815 (p3) probably related to Magdalen there being no other Magdalen Dunbars evident contemporaneously]:
SCOTS BANKRUPTS. sequestrations. Magdalen Dunbar, milliner and dress-maker in Edinburgh – Creditors meet in the Royal Exchange Coffehouse there, 21st September and 10th October, one o'clock.
Robert also tapped into Debrett's Baronetage of England, 7th edition, published in London in 1835, edited by William Courthope, Esq., and A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage of the British Empire, London, 1839, edited by John Burke, and indicates that Magdalen's father, Alexander Dunbar of Nairn, had married MARJORY DUNBAR [daughter of ALEXANDER DUNBAR of Boath], on 16 September 1782.
George Voller Oughton may be referred to in the Journal on the ship 'Calcutta', 1841 / David Burn

W.E.D. Scott <wedscott@madasafish.com, 11aug2002> listed the 1834 Portsmouth-Gosport Voters List for Portsea , noting::
• Oughton, George Voller, 6 Oakley-place, Southsea
George Oughton made a submission to the Commissioners for Inquiring into Naval and Military Promotion and Retirement, undertaken for their Report to the House of Commons about 1840, in which he summarised the work and remuneration of Pursers and argued for new coditions, perhaps referenced in W. N. T. Beckett's article A Hundred Years of the Royal Navy [not viewed by this author], Royal United Services Institution. Journal, Vol. 76, Iss. 502, 1931.
The census taken 6 June 1841 shews George and Magdalena in Green Lane, Portsea Town, Portsmouth, Hampshire; George and Magdalena's son Frederic was one of 21 boy pupils at Wm Prince's nearby school, along with his half-nephew Thomas Kidd:

George Voller Oughton, aged 69 years, paymaster and purser in
the Royal Navy, resident of Norfolk Street, Southsea, Southampton, died 27 September 1854 was buried
on 3 October 1854 at the Royal Garrison Church, Southsea, Hampshire. He was
survived by his wife Madalene [sic]. His will was proven at Canterbury on 29
December 1854.
Magdalene Oughton (née Dunbar) survived her husband by less than two years and was buried at Southsea on 2 June 1856.
2.1.1.3.1 George Edward Outon (1804… 1832)
[Portsea, Hampshire ->Port Royal, British West Indies]
George Edward Oughton eldest son of GEORGE VOLLER OUTON and his first wife SOPHIA SEARLY was baptised in April 1804, Portsea Hants.
George Edward Oughton died in August 1832 in the British West Indies; a memorial was erected by his father in the Port Royal Parish Churchi [St. Peter’s Church, Kingston, Jamaica]:
Sacred to the memory of George Edward Oughton - Gentleman R.N. - eldest son of George V. Oughton, Esquire, R.N.. K.T.S., who departed this life 4th August, 1832, aged 28 yrs. This tablet is erected to the memory of the deceased by his affectionate father.
George Edward Oughton's death was also reported in various military journals, generally similar to:
[Lately / Oct. 12th], ... In the West Indies, deeply regretted, Mr. Oughton, Assistant-Surgeon, R.N., son of G. V. Oughton, Esq., Purser of the Vernon.
2.1.1.3.2
♦ Sophia Matilda Outon (1808
1853?) m. John Kidd (c1801
1852)
[Portsea, Hampshire -> Hythe, Kent -> Victoria, Australia]
Spinster Sophia Matilda
Oughton, baptised in June 1808 at Holy Trinity Church, Exeter, Devon,
the daughter of GEORGE VOLLER OUTON and his wife SOPHIA SEARLEY, married bachelor
Dr John Kidd, Surgeon, RN, by licence at St Leonards, Hythe, Kent,
on 15 July 1829; he was then 28 years old and she was 21; her father was a witness.
This leaves unresolved any relationship between
Sophia Matilda Oughton and Rear
Admiral James Oughton, RN. A newspaper notice regarding the second (1891)
marriage of Sophia's grandson Thomas George [Dunbar Oughton] Kidd noted Thomas
as a "grandson of Dr John Kidd RN and great-grandson of the late Admiral
Oughton of Portsmouth". James Oughton was superannuated as a Rear Admiral
[Yellow Flag] about 1825 and died in 1832 in Banffshire, and despite a distinguished
career as Post Captain would be an unlikely candidate for assumed ancestory
unless more directly known to Sophia. Though a considerable amount is known
about him, there is no direct evidence that he either married or had children.
Any acquaintance would have been in her formative years.
John and Sophia had at least five children, including:
- THOMAS GEORGE KIDD (born
c1830, ?Ireland, baptised in June 1831 at Bridge, Kent; died pre1867 ?NSW; married Elizabeth Margaret Openshaw in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1852, four or five children; in 1867 the widowed Elizabeth Margaret Kidd née Openshaw married mariner James Hewitt, with at least three issue [Elizabeth died in NSW in 1893]),
- JOHN OUGHTON KIDD (born c1832, Hampshire ENG, served in the Royal Navy from 1851 – appointed a mate in the Wolverine on the North America and West Indies station in 1854 [at the time of the Crimean War]),
- GEORGE FREDERICK KIDD
(born circa 1833, died 29 November 1852, Collingwood VIC).
- SOPHIA MARGARET KIDD
(born 26 January 1841 at Portsea, christened March 1841, St Mary's, Portsea Hampshire, probably aboard
the Madagascar when it disappeared in late 1853, ex Melbourne for London)
and
- HENRY BARNETT KIDD (born
March 1843, christened July 1843 at St Mary's, Portsea, likely to have been
aboard the Madagascar when it disappeared).
Another possible issue to John and/or Sophia, mentioned by Kellie-ann Weber [May 2005], and others, was:
- GEORGE HENRY SEYMOUR (born 1832, Bridge KEN; died 1902 QLD; married Mary Galvin, with issue; note that a descendant of Thomas George Kidd shares some autosomal DNA with two descendants of George Henry Seymour).
John Kidd RN migrated to
Australia in 1851 aboard the emigrant ship Stebonheath; he died in Melbourne
on 1 February 1852, aged 48 years, only six weeks after arriving in Victoria
aboard the Stebonheath intending to settle. John Kidd was survived by
his wife and five children.
It appears that Sophia Matilda Kidd née Oughton was, with children Sophia
and Henry, aboard the ship Madagascar which departed Melbourne in August
1853 bound for London, and was never seen again. [For
further details of this family refer to the Kidd
file.].
2.1.1.3.3 Sidney Outon (1809…1809)
[Portsea, Hampshire]
Sidney Oughton, third child of GEORGE VOLLER OUTON and his first wife SOPHIA SEARLY was born on 19 May 1809 and baptised 6 June 1809 at St Johns, Portsea, Hampshire. Sidney was buried 6 September 1809 at Portsea Hants.
2.1.1.3.4 Henry Outon (1811…)
[Portsea, Hampshire -> ? ]
Henry Oughton, youngest son of GEORGE VOLLER OUTON and his first wife SOPHIA SEARLY was born December 1811, baptised February 1812, St Johns, Portsea.
2.1.1.3.5 Alexander Barkly Oughton (1824…1846)
[Portsea, Hampshire -> Athens, Greece]
Alexander Barkly Oughton, first son of GEORGE VOLLER OUTON and his second wife MAGDALENA DUNBAR, was baptised September 1824 at All-Hallows-the-Great, London [All-Hallows-the-Great was re-built 1677-84 by Wren after the Great Fire in what is now Upper Thames Street; it was demolished in 1894].
Alexr. Barkly Oughton, aged 21 years, Midshipman of H.M.S. Tyne, was buried on 26 May 1846 at St Paul's Anglican Church, Athens, Greece. The Nautical Standard and Steam Navigation Gazette of 27 June 1846 (p403) reported:
Midshipman ALEXANDER BERKELEY OUGHTON, of the Tyne, 26, at the Piræus, Athens, on the 25th May, after a few days' illness, aged 21 years. He was third son of George Voller Oughton, Esq., K.T.S., Paymaster and Purser. The remains of this young officer have been buried, with military honours, at the Protestant Cemetery at Athens, followed to the tomb by the united procession of all nations present, viz., French, Russian, Austrian, and Grecian ; the British Ambassador as the Grecian Court, and also the Consul-General, joined the procession at the gates of the Cemetery. The marked and honourable respect thus shown to the deceased must be grateful to the feelings of his bereaved parents ; and it will be consolatory to them to know that the officers of the Tyne have decided on erecting a monument to mark the resting-place of him who lived amongst them highly esteemed, and died sincerely regretted.
Rob Bulford [email, 25jun2014] noted that there appears to be an image of the will and/or probate from 1847 of Alexander Barkley (sic) Oughton on findmypast.com.au.
2.1.1.3.6 Frederick Dunbar Oughton (1828…1847+)
[Portsea, Hampshire -> South Australia -> ? ]
Frederick Dunbar Oughton, second son of GEORGE VOLLER OUTON and his second wife MAGDALENA DUNBAR, was baptised May 1828 at St Leonards, Hythe, Kent [where Sophia Matilda Oughton (George's daughter by his first marriage) and John Kidd were married in July 1829] – the Oughtons were resident at West Hythe.
Maree Mayer, contributing to RootsWeb AUS-VIC-Goldfields on-line discussion list in March 2000, noted that Frederick Dunbar Oughton was listed amongst sailors discharged from the crew of the David Malcolm in Port Adelaide, South Australia, in February 1847. Margaret Crispin [November 2011] located a Frederick Oughton listed as a British carpenter in the crew of the 421 ton burthen ship Berengaria which arrived in Sydney from Manilla on 29 May 1862..

The Tweeddales:
The Tweeddale family is not directly associated with the Kidd or Outon/Oughton families, but is connected by marriage to the family of Margaret Dunbar, second daughter of ALEXANDER DUNBAR of Nairn. Magdalene Dunbar, Margaret's elder sister, was the second wife of George Voller Oughton.
T-1 James Tweeddale (c1789…1849) m. Margaret Dunbar/Milligan (c1793… 1868)
[Westminster, Middlesex → Royal Navy → Adelaide, South Australia]
James Tweeddale married Margaret Dunbar, second daughter of the late ALEXANDER DUNBAR of Nairn, Scotland, at Edinburgh on 10 June 1815; Rob Bulford (via eMail, jul2014) located a report in the Caledonian Mercury, Saturday 17 June 1815 (p3):
–MARRIED– At Edinburgh, on the 10th current, Mr. James Twaddel, surgeon, Royal Navy, to Margaret, second daughter of the late Alexander Dunbar, Esq. Nairn.
Margaret was a younger sister of Magdalen(e) Dunbar, eldest daughter of the late ALEXANDER DUNBAR of Nairn, the second wife of George Voller Oughton's, who had married at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, on 28 February 1818. James and Margaret Tweeddale were then living in Westminster and were signatory witnesses at George and Magdalen's marriage. As noted before in detailing George and Magdalen's marriage, Debrett's Baronetage of England indicates Alexander's wife was MARJORY DUNBAR [daughter of ALEXANDER DUNBAR of Boath], married on 16 September 1782.
The 30 March 1851 census shews Magdalin Oughton married, aged 60 [viz. born c1791 (at Nairn, Scotland)] residing at 11 Norfolk Square, Portsea, with her nephew Ernest Augustus Tweeddale, and Margaret Tweeddale, a widow aged 58 [viz. born c1793 (in Scotland)], residing with two of her children at 5 Robert St., Westminster. No direct birth or baptismal details of either Magdalen or Margaret have been located in this research.
Rob Bulford (via eMail, jul2014) located several newspaper articles which shew Alexander Dunbar a merchant in Nairn. The earliest article, in the Scots Magazine of Sunday 1 May 1785 (p43) and Caledonian Mercury of Wednesday 25 May 1785 (p3), reported: Alexander Dunbar merchant in Nairn, Æneas Barclay clerk or fhopkeeper to the faid Alexander Dunbar, James Kay, prefently refiding in Invernefs, James Simpfon and John Jamiefon merchants in Elgin, and James Stevenfon merchant in Garmouth, were indicted for deforcing the officers of the revenue. Alexander Dunbar and James Kay were found guilty ; the firft was fined in 400 merks, and to be imprifoned for one month, the latter to be imprifoned for fix weeks. The above reports note the relationship between Alexander Tweeddale and Æneas Barclay: Alexander and Margaret named their second son (baptised 1824) Æneas Barkly Tweeddale, George Voller Oughton and Magdalen named their first child (baptised 1824) Alexander Barkly Oughton [Barkly spet variously].
Rob Bulford (via eMail, jul2014) also located a notice in the Scots Magazine, Tuesday 1 July 1794 (p66) regarding the death of Alexander Duncan:
DEATHS. April 18. At Kingfton, Jamaica, Mr Alexander Dunbar, late merchant in Nairne.
James Tweeddale was promoted to Surgeon, R.N., on 19 August 1811. James and Margaret and were the parents of nine children:

He can be found in the 1851 Census residing in King's Lynn. He is 70 years of age and gives his occupation as Magistrate for Lynn, M.D. Aberdeen University on half pay as Surgeon, Royal Navy. His wife Harriet age 55 who was born in Middlesex resides with him. They have three servants.

SUDDEN DEATH OF DR. TWEEDDALE.
A familiar figure in the medical world passed away yesterday in the person of Dr. John Dunbar Tweeddale, who, his friends will be pained to learn, died suddenly while in the city.
Though 82 years of age, the doctor was still youthful enough to fill the position of health officer at the Heads. Yesterday he was moving about the city in his usual health and spirits, and early in the afternoon entered the offices of Messrs. C. J. and T. Ham to transact some business with the firm. He had scarcely commenced to talk of his affairs when he suddenly fell to the floor, and became immediately unconscious. Constable Beyers was called off the point at the intersection of Collins and Swanston streets, and with his assistance Dr. Tweeddale was taken in a cab to the Melbourne Hospital. The doctor was not dead when placed in the cab, but Miss Freda Gamble, M.B., found that life was extinct when she made an examination in the casualty-room of the Hospital.
The facts of the death were reported to Dr. Youl, the city coroner, who ordered that a post-mortem examination of the body should be made. This disclosed that the cause of death was Bright's disease, and upon getting a certificate to that effect, Dr. Youl decided that an inquest was unnecessary. The body was then removed to the late home of the deceased in Evelyn-street, East Melbourne.
Dr. Tweeddale was a widower, with several grown-up daughters, and he was at one time a surgeon in the Royal Navy. A member of the Royal College of Surgeons, England, he commenced the practice of his profession as far back as 1837. Having served many years in the Royal Navy, he settled down in Melbourne to private practice. Subsequently he received the appointment of health officer at the Heads, a position he was well qualified to fill, because of his marine training and his extensive acquaintance with the symptoms of small-pox and other diseases necessitating the adoption of quarantine precautions. In the discharge of his duties at the Heads, Dr. Tweeddale had displayed, for his years, remarkable vitality and youthfulness of vigour, but subsequent to the passing by him of the s.s. Nineveh, which was afterwards discovered to have small-pox on board, it was considered that a younger man should be appointed to the position. The manner in which the proposition was made did not meet with Dr. Tweeddale's approval, and to the last he was vigorously opposing the desire of the Board of Health to have him supplanted.
Victorian Electoral Rolls shew Constance Dunbar Tweeddale [home duties] and Elaine Tweeddale [home duties] at 37 Mathoura rd., Toorak, in 1903, at 71 Mathoura rd., Toorak, in 1909 and Constance Dunbar Tweeddale [home duties] and Elaine Dunbar Tweeddale [journalist] at 71 Mathoura rd., Toorak, in 1914. Constance Dunbar Tweeddale [home duties] is listed at 480 Punt rd., South Yarra, in 1931, 1936 and 1937, and at 767 Punt rd., South Yarra, in 1943 and 1949.

Effects £282 13s. 9d.
The weekly journal South Africa of 3 April 1909 confirms the William Alexander Tweeddale who died in 1909 as the son of James and Margaret:
DEATHS
TWEEDDALE - On March 13, after a long illness, William Alexander, last surviving son of James Tweeddale, M.D., Surgeon, R.N., and Margaret Dunbar Tweeddale, in his 85th year.
A report in The London Gazette of April 23, 1909 (p 3156) notes William Alexander Tweeddale, husband of Maria, was involved in shipping [“retired Agent of the Union Steamship Company”], corrobating his being William, son of James and Margaret, ship broker, ship owner, shipping insurance agent, and now in a second marriage:
Re WILLIAM ALEXANDER TWEEDDALE,
Deceased.
Pursuant to the Act of Parliament, 22nd and 23rd Vic., cap.35, intituled "An Act to further amend the Law of Property, and to relieve Trustees."
NOTICE is hereby given, that all creditors and other persons having any claims or demands against the estate of William Alexander Tweeddale, late of York House, 55, Maida-vale, formerly of 27, Blandford-road, Turnham Green, both in the county of Middlesex, deceased, retired Agent of the Union Steamship Company (who died on the 13th day of March, 1909, intestate, and letters of administration to whose estate and effects were granted by the Principal Registry of the Probate Division of His Majesty's High Court of Justice, on the 17th day of April, 1909, to Maria Tweeddale, the lawful Widow and relict of the said intestate), are hereby required to send particulars, in writing, of their claims or demands to the undersigned, Messrs. John C. Button and Co., of the London and County Bank House, Covent-garden, W.C., the Solicitors for the said Maria Tweeddale, the administratrix, on or before the 31st day of May, 1909, after which date the said Maria Tweeddale will proceed to distribute the assets of the said deceased amongst the persons entitled thereto, having regard only to the claims and demands of which she shall then have had notice; and she will not be liable for the assets of the said deceased, or any part thereof, so distributed, to any person or persons of whose claims or demands she shall not then have had notice.—Dated the 21st day of April, 1909.
JOHN C. BUTTON and CO., London and County Bank House, Covent-garden, W.C., Solicitors for the said Administratrix.
Maria was possibly the London-born widowed boarder, aged 83, living on 'private means' at 2 German Place, Brighton in the 2 April 1911 census [viz. born c1828]: struck-through indicates her 'present' marriage had lasted two years with no issue resulting. Indexes imply that she was the Maria Tweeddale, aged 88, whose death was registered in the Brighton district, Sussex, in 4q1916 [viz. born c1828]. An alternative is that Maria was Maria Katharine Tweedale (Maria Katharine Rorke, daughter of John Rorke) of 81 Duke-street, Grosvenor-square, Middlesex, who was 82 when she died on 30 December 1921 (viz. born 1839) leaving an estate of £41176 10s. 11d. with probate granted to Clarens Tweedale: she was the wife of Alexander Tweedale (son of James Tweedale), married 6 November 1858, St George, Bloomsbury, Camden – prior to the William Alexander Tweedale's marriage to Louisa Plowman, on 2 December 1863 at St Cuthbert's, Wells (Louisa Tweeddale's death aged 55 was registered in 3q1886).
T-1.7 James Dunbar Tweeddale (1826…1845+)
[Westminster, Middlesex]
James Dunbar Tweeddale, son of surgeon JAMES TWEEDDALE and MARGARET DUNBAR, of 87 St Martin's Lane, was “stated to be born 21st Augt 1826” when baptised at St Martin's in the Fields, Westminster, Middlesex, on 1 November 1826.
The 1845 Post Office Directory of London (p512) lists James a physician at 87 St. Martin's lane.
T-1.8 Ernest Augustus Tweeddale (1831…1868)
[Westminster, Middlesex]
Ernest Augustus Tweeddale, son of JAMES TWEEDDALE, M.D., and MARGARET DUNBAR, of St Martin's Lane, was baptised at St Martin's in the Fields, Westminster, Middlesex, on 5 March 1831.
The Navy List (20 June 1856) regarding Lieutenants, with their dates of Seniority (p50) notes:
