Appendix A Parish Burial Grounds pp23-28
Apart from the graveyards presently in use in the parish at Magheralough and Coa, the old graveyards at Kilskeery and Magheracross hold the remains of parish residents who died over the past 300 years or more. Some headstones in Kilskeery graveyard date back to the early l600s, while unmarked graves in the oldest part of the graveyard could considerably pre-date that period. The old graveyard at Magheracross is of similar antiquity and was the burial place for the Coa, Magheracross and part of Kilskeery areas from the l600s. Since the dawn of christianity burial places are believed to have existed at Kilnock, Killee, Bodoney, Carren Hill, Cavanamarra, Crossan and Relagh, not forgetting the old graveyard at "Cealltract", beside the old monastery at Trelic Mor and dating to the seventh and eight centuries. This particular area is unique in that the adjoining "standing stones" mark the site of the pre-christian burial ground, yet another example of the way christianity and christian customs were established right in the stronghold of non-christian worship and customs. It call also be assumed that burials have taken place at Kilskeery since the sixth century monastery was founded there.
It is only in the present century that the erecting of headstones, especially over catholic graves, has become commonplace. Apart from the fact that in many cases they could not afford the cost, it is easy to appreciate that, during more than three hundred years of persecution, some catholics would have been reluctant to disclose family particulars. There is also evidence in the old Kilskeery graveyard, in Magheracross and in Killee, that a large flat stone without an inscription was simply placed on top of a grave. It is likely that land developers in the post plantation era would have had no qualms about clearing plots of ground containing no markings other than these and many old graveyards must have been lost in this way. It is widely believed that, in times of poverty , famine or persecution, burials took place in whatever reasonably secluded patch was available locally. Parish residents whose forebears had burial plots in cemeteries in adjoining parishes have in some cases continued to use those burial places, so that many parishioners rest in peace alongside their neighbours in Dromore, Irvinestown, Tempo and Fintona graveyards.
The number and quality of headstones now being provided and the caring manner in which graves and cemeteries are looked after, reflects most favourably on all concerned. The improvements carried out to Magheralough and Coa graveyards over the past two years, under the supervision of Father McKenna, have made all parts of the graveyards easily accessible and is much appreciated. It invariably happens that townland names are omitted from headstone inscriptions and this will make the identification of graves more difficult for future generations, while at the same time putting another nail in the coffin of our historic townland names.
In this very general guide to graves in Magheralough, Kilskeery and Coa cemeteries, there is included a plan of each graveyard, showing grave numbers and locations with a list indicating families buried therein.
The present parish cemetery at Magheralough was purchased from Bob Charleton on 8 May, 1901, by Father McGinnity, P.P., and was known to many of the older generations as Charleton's hill. Father McGinnity's intention, as the deed of conveyance dated 17 October, 1906 confirms, was to use the property as a site for a cemetery and a new church. It is probable that Father Matt Maguire explored the possibility of building a church there between 1906 and 1927 and the efforts of Father McManus who was appointed Parish Priest in 1927 to have a church built at Charleton' s Hill and later at Stralongford or Kinnine, are remembered by many. Whatever the difficulties were, Fathei McManus eventually had the entire hill lined out for a graveyard in 1927 and in 1929 St. Macartan's Church, Magheralough, was renovated and extended. The first burial in Magheralough graveyard is believed to have been that of John Goodfellow, Cloncandra, in 1906.
The old Kilskeery graveyard, although perhaps seldom visited nowadays, should be held in high esteem by the people of the parish. Apart from the fact that very many of our forebears are buried there and that there are headstones there of historical significance, the first christian place of worship in the parish fourteen hundred years ago was within the cemetery walls. The saintly Scire established her base and church there, perhaps Saint Patrick visited there, Saint Colmcille almost certainly did and a church was built, plundered, built, burned and built again there, to survive into the nineteenth century .After plantation and confiscation, the church was used by the established Protestant faithful as a church until their new one was built in 1790. Catholics and Protestants are buried side by side in the graveyard, so that all sections of the community can be said to have breathed a prayer and shed a tear on that sacred ground.
The oldest legible headstone inscription is that of Rev. Matthew Young, the first Protestant minister of Kilskeery, who died on 16 December, 1626, while there are a number of burials recorded for the 1900s up to 1920. A remarkably high number of people in the 1700s and 1800s died young but on the other hand, Henry McCann was aged 99 when he died in 1825. John Beacom, Glassmullagh, was 100 when he died in 1859 and Sarah Aiken was 102 when she died in 1837. The most historic headstone is that at No 87 on the list, to the great-great-grandson of Shane "The Proud" O'Neill, which reads "Here lieth the body of Mr. Con Mac Turlough O'Neill, Mac Shan og, Mac Breon, Mac Shane O'Demus, Earl of Tyrone and 21 of his grandchildren. He died 29 May 1723, aged 86 years". Headstone No 86 belongs to the same O'Neill family and reads "Here lieth the body of Mr. John O'Neill, son to Mr. Henry O'Neill, who died 2 May, 1714, aged 4 years, and Catherine O'Neill who died in the year 1711." Yet another O'Neill headstone, at No 9, to the memory of Henry and Andrew O'Neill, Shanmullagh would appear to relate to the last of the O'Neills to inhabit the "Old Castle" area.
The most revered headstone is that at No 101, to the memory of Edward "The Pilgrim" Kelly, born at Tom Kelly's bridge at the bottom of the Bodoney road and who spent his life travelling around this and neighbouring parishes, praying and helping people in their hour of need. The inscription reads Edward Pilgrim Kelly, died 22 J anuary , 1822. Three parishes were blessed by his zeal and charity , a layman who gained many souls. His life was a series of prayer;. Also remembered Mary Kelly died 1832, Bridget Kelly 1833 and Thomas Kelly died 1851". Between graves No 5 and 6 there is the remains of a vaulted mausoleum of a Johnston family. It had contained a number of lead coffins but around 1941/42, when lead was precious during those war years, the vault was smashed and the lead coffms removed.
Coa graveyard was purchased and opened by Canon O'Doherty in 1909. Like so many graveyards, it is positioned on a steep hill slope, known as Drumisky, Drium uiscigh the hill of the water. The earliest headstone commemorates Patrick McMulkin, Bigh, who died in 1912, but it will be seen that a number of graves are without headstones.
MAGHERALOUGH GRAVEYARD PLAN plan will be linked here later
In the plan the graves are shown in rows, with the rows numbered along the bottom, parallel with the main road and the graves numbered from bottom to top along the side next the Church. When the graveyard was first designed, it was intended to have a driveway across the graveyard, two thirds way up, as shown. The driveway was completed from centre to right only, while graves have been made on the left portion. Since the rows in Section B are not strictly in line with those in Section A, the two sections are dealt with separately, with the dividing line being the intended driveway.
Row numbers in Section B read from left to right and grave numbers from bottom to top, as in Section A. Since there are about 600 graves used and more than one person buried in most of them, it would have been unwieldy in the overall context of the book to give individual details in each case. One name and address is given in respect of each grave and it is hoped that this will suffice for identification purposes.

KILSKEERY GRAVEYARD PLAN
plan will be linked here later
The graveyard is irregular in shape and is shown here in regular form simply for convenience. The row and grave numbers are arrived at by going through the entrance gate from the main road, turning left inside and going to the left corner, moving along the West or river wall and numbering marked graves in numerical order from left to right, repeating the process for each succeeding row. Because very many graves have no markings and because rows are irregular, it may prove difficult to locate individual graves but the layout win become clear enough after a little initial frustration. It will be remembered also that there are slab stones with no markings and stones on which the markings are completely obliterated. In very many cases townlands are not given, date of death, where available, is given in brackets after the name. The following list gives the graves in numerical order and the Row Letters from the above table will be kept in mind to aid search.
