· CUTCOMBE. This is the highest parish in Somerset; it contains the peak of Dunkery Beacon (1707 feet) within its boundaries and the church is 930 feet above sea level, with magnificent views from the churchyard. The church is mainly of the 14th and 15th centuries, with a Norman fragment preserved in the font. The south aisle was built in the 19th century when the iron-mining industry brought prosperity to the neighbouring Brendon Hills. (Mee, 1968)

· CUTCOMBE (C) A large Exmoor parish to the south-west of Dunster, whose inhabitants formerly lived a hard, harsh existence. ... To the south-east Wheddon Cross is a modern hamlet which has mushroomed around what has been described as 'surely well up in the list for the worst cross-roads in England'.
