Provenance

All the families traced herein have been traced to Cornwall in England; in the 1870s some descendants emigrated to New South Wales.

Early Generations

1. Thomas Sandry (c1645…) m. Dorothy — (…c1685)

[Information marked * in this lineage is from WebSite of Mark Sandford [http://www.btinternet.com/~mark.sandford/names_cornwall.html], obtained Jul2005. Information marked † is from Thomas Ball. Information marked ‡ is from IGI]

Perhaps though unlikely the son of ROBERT SANDRIE†, Thomas Sandry (born circa 1645 at St Ervan Cornwall) and his wife of Dorothy —, were the parents of:

Dorothy Saundry, wife of Thomas, was buried at St Ervan on 1 January/February 1685 [or 1683 according to the Bishop's Transcripts, or 1686 according to the IGI] †. Thomas Sandry may have been buried on 9 September 1707†.

Perhaps related to Thomas, William Saundry and his wife Mary also had children baptised at St Ervan:

William Saundrey died on 13 March 1691 at St Ervan†.

Graham Tall's Ball Family Tree WebSite [http://82.36.188.48/Family%20History/Family%20History.htm, 21jan2005] discusses St Ervan and nearby parishes and his Sandry forebears:

… St. Ervan is only two miles from the coast but the church is more difficult to find than the nearby church at St.Eval. St. Ervan is situated, in a secluded spot, surrounded by fields, on a slope above a stream and stands by an ancient Holy Well. It was built in the thirteenth century and is cruciform in shape with thick stone walls. Anybody living there almost certainly worked on the land. St.Eval, by contrast stands isolated on a high plateau surrounded by the runways of RAF St Eval; the village was pulled down in 1938. The air station played a significant part in the battle against the U boats.

The mother of Samuel Sandry's wife, Mary Hicks (married 1724) was Candace Sandry. Whilst it is highly likely that the two 'Saundry' lines are related, the names of the children of the two lines differ, suggesting that Thomas and William were not brothers. The point of separation being before 1650. The Sandry's moved regularly, which suggests they were labourers:
Betsy Sandry, and her father Edward, was christened at Little Petherick
Edward Sandry's eldest brother was christened at St.Ervan.
Edward Sandry's father Samuel was christened at the adjacent parish of Mawgyn, whilst
Samuel Sandry's eldest brothers and father were, once again christened at St.Ervan.

2.  ♦  George Ellery (c1655…) m. Petronel Warne (…)

[Information marked * in this lineage is from the WebSite of Mark Sandford [http://www.btinternet.com/~mark.sandford/names_cornwall.html], obtained Jul2005.
Information marked † is from the compilation of St Breock baptisms 1715-1840 (presumably only Church of England records) by Mrs P.T. Drake © (2001).]
George Ellery, born circa 1655 at St Ervan, married Petronel (or Peternell) Warne on 14 February 1678J [1679G] at St Ervan. They were the parents of:

Some researchers' entries on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cornwall/ellery_researchers.htm have George the son of NICHOLAS ELLERY (baptised in 1625 at St Ervan) and grandson of NICOLAS ELLERY and DOROTHY BONALLACK. These researchers are Mark Sandford of Plymouth DEV (see above), Gael A Thompson of Homestead Place, Glenview, Hamilton NZ and Richard Douglas-Green, each descendants of George Ellery, George's grandson via John and Honour.

2.1  ♦ John Ellery (c1682…) m. Honour Sandry (1685…)

John Ellery, baptised 2 May 1682 at St Ervan, son of GEORGE ELLERY and PETRONEL WARNE, married Honour Sandry on 1 January 1705J at St Ervan. Honour, baptised 12 April 1685 at St Ervan, was the daughter of THOMAS and DOROTHY SANDRY. John and Honour were the parents of:

Note: it seems unlikely that the John Ellery who married Honour Lob(b) at St Issey on 5 January 1730j§ could have been the John Ellery baptised 18 January 1714j [1715g], St Issey*§, son of John Ellery and Homour Sanndry. Honor, baptised on 30 November 1702 at St Issey§, was the daughter of WILLIAM LOBB and AVIS HENWOOD. John Ellery and his wife and Honour Lobb were the parents of some six children:

2.1.1 George Ellery (1711…) m. Mary — (…)

George Ellory, baptised 5 August 1711 at St Ervan, the son of JOHN ELLERY and HONOUR SANDRY, married Mary —. They were the parents of possibly eleven children:

Richard Worden [2 December 2005] eMailed:
Subject: … Ellery was a name in the villages of St Breock/Egloshayle/Wadebridge. One married into my line Elizabeth Ellery M. Robert Worden in Egloshayle Church 26 June 1788. Had three children Thomas Richard Nancy (maybe more but no trace). I have pictures of Egloshayle Church, could send to you if required. I have been living in Spain for 20 years and came over to Cornwall to do the research. Now in the highlands of Scotland. The area in Cornwall is a very beautiful place, and the churchyards are so full of information, but now the inscriptions are fading a bit. …

Perhaps the Elizabeth Ellery who married Robert Worden was the daughter born c1759 to George and Mary [above] or born c1745 to Richard and Elizabeth [below]. Des Ellery of Camden NSW [per eMail 23oct2011] may be a descendant of Elizabeth Ellery and Robert Worden (he notes Richard as born 1763).

Joanne Warby [see http://jo.warby.bigpondhosting.com/p1.htm] is a descendant of Mary and William Cullis.

2.1.2  Richard Ellery (1715…) m. Elizabeth — (…)

Richard Ellory, baptised 17 October 1715, St Issey*, the son of JOHN ELLERY and HONOUR SANDRY, married Elizabeth . They were the parents of six children baptised at St Breock:

2.1.3 ♦  William Ellery (1719…) m. Ann — (…)

William Ellery, baptised 7 April 1719 at St Breock to son of JOHN ELLERY and HONOR SANDRY, was probably the the William Elory who married Ann Bishop at St Breock on 25 August 1741i; they had four children baptised at St Breock in the mid-1700s:

2.1.3.1 Joan Ellery (1754…1802) m. Thomas Kendall (1750…1824)

Joan Ellery, the daughter baptised at St Breock to WILLIAM and ANN ELLORY on 15 April 1754, possibly married Thomas Kendall (born 1750, son of MARY [Kendle]) at St Breock on 4 November 1777 . Thomas and his wife Joan were the parents of eight children; for further details see Section 3.1.

3. ♦ — Kendall (…) m. Mary — (1714…1802)

Mary —, born 1714, wife of — Kendall, was the mother of (at least):

Mary died 9 December 1802 and was buried at St Breock, Cornwall.

3.1 Thomas Kendall (1750…1824) m. Joan Ellory (c1756…1802)

Thomas Kendall (born 1750, buried 3 November 1824 at St Breock, son of MARY [Kendle]) married Joan Ellery at St Breock on 4 November 1777. Joan was possibly the daughter baptised at St Breock to WILLIAM and ANN ELLORY on 15 April 1754. Thomas and Joan were the parents of eight children:

Joan Kendall née Ellery, born 1756, died 12 May 1802 and was buried at St Breock. Thomas Kendall was buried 3 November 1824 at St Breock.
[The information above was kindly provided by Steve Hatton, 10 March 2003, 2003] with further research by Ross Beattie].

3.1.1 Roger Kendle (c1787…1841+) m. Mary — (c1786…1851+)

Roger Kendall, born circa 1787, possibly the son baptised at St Breock, Cornwall, on 21/7 January 1787 for THOMAS KENDALL and his wife JOAN ELLERY, married Cornishwoman Mary —; the census of 6 June 1841 shews them as possible parents of:

3.1.1.1 Roger Kendle (c1816…1851+) m. Maria — (c1817…1851+)

Roger Kendall, born circa 1816, probably a son of ROGER and MARIA KENDALL above, and his wife Maria —; the 1841 census shews another Roger Kendall, probaly his father, lived Nearby. Roger (b1816) [noted in the baptismal registers as a farmer resident at Trevarren] and Maria were parents of:

Maria, spinster of full age and a resident of Probus, was the daughter of farmer RICHARD TRELEAVAN. Roger (a yeoman resident at Trevarrien, St Mawgan) and Maria were parents of:

3.1.2 Thomas Kendle (c1787…1861+) m. Susanna Kestle (c1799…1881)

Thomas Kendle (born circa 1787, son of THOMAS KENDALL and JOAN ELLERY) and his wife Susanna Kestell (Kestle/Kestall) (born Devonport, Devon, circa 1799) married at St Breock, Cornwall, on 21 November 1821; they were the parents of:

Strangely, it seems that in the 1861 census Thomas and Susannah were enumerated at St Breock under Susanna's maiden surname, Kestell, with daughter Susanna and [her] son John:

3.1.2.1 Cordelia Kendle (c1821…1908) m. William Vercoe (c1813…1897)

Patricia Foley (née Vercoe) [29jun2006] kindly contributed the basic details regarding Cordelia and her family.
The marriage of Cordelia Kendell (born circa 1821 and baptised at St Breock on 28 July 1822, daughter of THOMAS KENDLE and his wife SUSANNA KESTELL [KESTLE/KESTALL]) and farmer William Varcoe was registered in the St Columb district, Cornwall, during the last quarter of 1855 . William, born circa 1813 at St Wenn CON, was the son of WILLIAM and GRACE VERCOE [a William Varcoe and Grace Menneer had married at Withiel CON in 1810; a comment (perhaps a placename) "Cabmrer" is associated with this marriage in Pallot's Marriage Index for England]. William and Cordelia were the parents of at least one child, a son:

3.1.2.2 Johanna Kendell (c1838…1893) m. Samuel Wills (1852…1893)

Johanna Kendle, born circa 1826 at St Breock, was baptised on 30 April 1826 at Egloshayle, the daughter of farmer THOMAS KENDALL and his wife SUSANNA of St Breock. Johanna married Samuel Wills; they had probably three issue. For further details refer to Section 7.1.

3.1.2.3 Thomas Daniel Kendle (c1830…1902) m. Mary Jane - (c1833…1881+)

4. Richard Watters (c1781…1841-1877) m. Jane Johns (1791c…1841-1877)

Miner Richard Watters married Jane Johns in February 1814 at Crowan in Cornwall. They raised at least five children, probably at Crowan or Camborne, Cornwall, where their daughter Phillipa was born circa 1831, and the family was living in 1841. The five known children were:

The family appears in the 1841 census (done) at Horse Down, Crowan, in Cornwall:

5. James Green (…1877-) m. Jane Green (…1877+)

James Green and Jane Green were the parents in Cornwall of (at least):
James and Jane are identified on Fredericks death certificate, where Jane' s name is written as Jane [formerly] Green: it is unclear whether this indicates Jane's maiden name or a previous marriage. The death certificate is also the only currently located instance of Frederick's middle name, "Broad". James was apparently deceased and Jane was known alive in Cornwall when Frederick emigrated to Australia in 1877.

5.1 Frederick Broad Green (1829…1900) m. Phillipa Watters (1832…1918)

Frederick Green was born at St Hilary in Cornwall England c1829-1832 to JANE GREEN; Jane was known to be still living in Cornwall in 1877. Frederick married Phillipa Watters at Crowan Cornwall in January 1851; 19 years old, she was the daughter of miner RICHARD WATTERS, born about 1781, and his wife JANE JOHNS, born about 1791. Phillipa had been born at Crowan or Camourne c1832; both her parents were deceased by 1877. Crowan is a small parish and village in West Cornwall, 8km NNW of Helston; a local landmark is Crowan Beacon, 721' high. The children of Frederick and Phillipa, all born in Cornwall, were:

Frederick and Phillipa and most of their children emigrated to Australia aboard the 1,444 ton Aberdeen-built Samuel Plimsoll, departing Plymouth on the 9 June 1877 and arriving at Sydney on 27 August 1877. The shipping lists include Frederick Green, 45, a miner born to Jane Green still living in Cornwall, and Phillipa Green, 44, whose parents were both deceased. With them were their unmarried children Henry, 24, a miner, Christiana, 16, engaged in home duties, Frederick, 14, and dependant children Abraham, 11, Grace, 10, and Sarah, 9. Phillipa Ann, 23, was with her miner husband Samuel Kestel Wills, 24, son of Samuel Wills of Cornwall, and their children Phillipa, 2, and infant Thomas Henry. Elizabeth, 22, travelled with her husband John Rowe, 25, a carpenter the son of Richard Rowe still living in Cornwall. John's labourer brother Richard, 23, was making the passage with his wife Susan, 21, daughter of John Stevens of Cornwall, and their daughter who had been born en voyage.

The Green and Wills families were all born in Cornwall, excepting two-year old Phillipa who had been born in Cumberland. They had no relatives resident in the colonies; all were members of the Church of England except Christina and Elizabeth who were Wesleyan, and all except Henry (and the younger children) could read and write. Both families arrived in good health with no complaints regarding the voyage. Two of Frederick and Phillipa Green's children, the first-born Christina (who had probably died prior to 1861) and Jane, were not among the emigrants.

All the Rowes were described as literate Wesleyan with no relatives resident in the colony, and all were in good health except Susan who required hospital treatment following her child's birth. The Samuel Plimsoll's voyage of 79 days witnessed five deaths and five births on board.

Frederick Broad Green, 71 years old, a cemetery caretaker, son of James and Jane, died 30 June 1900 at Bathurst Road, Orange NSW. He was noted as the son of miner JAMES GREEN and JANE GREEN (formerly GREEN); born in Cornwall, he had married there when aged 21 years to Philippa Walters (sic), and had been in New South Wales for 22 years. He was survived by Phillipa and children Jane (49), Henry (48), Phillipa A. (46), Christina (38), Frederick (36), Grace (34) and Sarah (32), and predeceased by two male and two female issue. He was buried in the Wesleyean Cemetry at Orange.

Phillipa Green, daughter of Richard Waters and Jane Johns, died aged 88 years 22 October 1918 at Schofields near Blacktown NSW, the death was registered at Windsor by her daughter Sarah Ellis who gave her own address as Orange NSW though Sarah and her husband were known to have been resident at Pendle Hill near Schofields at one time. Phillipa was buried in the Methodist Cemetery at Orange after a Congregational service.

5.1.1 Phillipa Anne Green (1853…1905) m. Samuel Kessell Wills (1852…1919)

Phillipa Anne Green was the daughter born in Cornwall in December 1853 of miner FREDERICK GREEN and his wife PHILLIPA WATTERS/WATERS. On her twentieth birthday at Caraburn / Camborne near Corrimal in Cornwall, Phillipa married Samuel Kessell (or Kastell or Thomas) Wills, the son of labourer SAMUEL WILLS and his wife JOHANNA KENDALL and christened at St Kew Cornwall in 1852. Samuel and Phillipa, with their first-born two children Phillipa and Thomas Henry, emigrated to Australia in 1877 aboard the Samuel Plimsoll, together with most of Phillipa's family and some relatives by marriage. Phillipa died in a sulky accident in 1905, Samuel afterwards marrying a widow, Lydia Clara Keays nee Kilpatrick, who bore him at least one child. Further details of their families follow.

5.1.2 Elizabeth Green (c1855…1885) m. John Rowe (c1852…1907)

Elizabeth Green, born c1855 and baptised 1855, was the daughter of FREDERICK GREEN and PHILLIPA WATERS. Elizabeth married John Rowe, carpenter born c1852 to RICHARD ROWE and MARY DAVY. John had been baptised in 1853 at Madron Cornwall. John and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia with the Green and Rowe families, and John's brother Richard and his family, aboard the Samuel Plimsoll in 1877. In New South Wales, Elizabeth bore John at least three children; this family is further described below.

5.1.3 Grace Green (b1867c…1937) m. James Sallans (1853…1909)

Grace Green, daughter born c1867 to FREDERICK GREEN and PHILLIPA WATERS, spinster of Orange, married wheelwright James Sallans, bachelor of Lithgow, at Lithgow on 29 November 1883 . Witnesses were Minnie Green and Fannie Rutledge. The eleven children of Grace and James were:

The death of Grace Sallans nee Green was registered at Lithgow in 1937. Coachmaker James Sallans, son of farmer John Sallans and Ann Brett, died at Coonamble on 8 November 1909, aged 56 years. He had arrived in Australia circa 1880.

5.1.3.1 Frederick John Sallons (1884…1950) m. Gertrude May Tunny (1889… 1954)

Frederick John Sallons, son born 1884 to JAMES SALLANS and GRACE GREEN, married Gertrude May Tunny at Coonamble in 1912. Gertrude's birth to JOHN H TUNNY and MARY BRENNAN (married 1882, Coonamble) had been registered at Coonamble in 1890.The nine children of Frederick and Gertrude were:

The death of Frederick John Sallans was registered at Orange in 1950. The death on 18 December 1954, aged 65, of Gertrude May Sallans, 'late of Dulwich Hill', was noted in the Sydney Morning Herald on 20 December 1954 and registered at Redfern in 1955.

5.1.3.2 Annie Sallons (1886…1971) m. Walter William Tucker (1887… 1965)

Annie Sallons, born 1886 at Lithgow to JAMES SALLANS and GRACE GREEN, married Walter William Tucker at Orange in 1916.The nine children of Walter and Anne were:

The death of Walter William Tucker, son of WILLIAM and MARY, was registered at Lithgow in 1965. The death on 30 October 1971 of Annie Tucker, aged 86, 'late of Lithgow', was noted in the Sydney Morning Herald on 1 November 1971..

5.1.4 Sarah Green (b1868c) m. Arthur Ellis (b1870c)

Sarah Green, daughter born c1868 to FREDERICK GREEN and PHILLIPA WATERS, married Arthur Ellis (born c1870) near Orange in 1890. Arthur and Sarah Ellis later lived at Pendle Hill NSW. Arthur was a heavily bearded quack with jars of patent medicines made from his home-grown herbs, guaranteed to prevent all kinds of ills, and a healthy country smell. His son took over the Pendle Hill property, raising chickens in underground incubators. All traces of the family's activities are now gone. Sarah had one daughter,
  • OLIVE M ELLIS (born 1891 about Lithgow NSW).

Olive married Charles Arnold in 1916; the marriage was registered at Windsor NSW. Charlie, who sometimes took Sid Brown fishing, is remembered as a "nice bloke".

[Apparently unrelated, the birth of a William Ellis was registered to Arthur and Sarah J Ellis at Moree in 1896.]

6. Richard Rowe (c1823…1881-91) m. Mary Davy (c1822…1891+)

The marriage of bachelor farmer Richard Rowe, aged 25, of Landithy, and spinster Mary Davy, aged 24, of Trengwainton, was solemnized in May 1847 at Madron CON. The registers record that Richard was the son of farmer JOHN ROWE, and Mary the daughter of farmer THOMAS DAVY.

Mary was most likely the daughter of miner THOMAS and ELIZABETH DAVEY of Kenijack baptised in August 1822 at St Just in Penwith, near Lands End.

Richard was probably baptised at Sancreed in July 1821, the son of labourer JOHN and ELIZABETH ROWE of Sancreed. The 1841 census indicates that John had been born about 1799 and Elizabeth about 1785.

A John Rowe, yeoman residing at Paul, and Elizabeth Marrack of Sancreed had married by licence at Sancreed in May 1817; these were likely to have been Richards parents. Their apparent issue were John Rowe (baptised at Sancreed in May 1818), Mary Rowe (baptised at Sancreed in December1819), Elizabeth Rowe (baptised at Sancreed in December 1820), Caroline Rowe (baptised at Sancreed in June 1821), Richard Rowe (baptised at Sancreed in July 1821) and Clarinda Rowe (baptised at Sancreed in March 1824). It is likely that several earlier baptisms to a John and Elizabeth were of a different family.

[Note though the marriages of John Rowe [X], bachelor of the Town of Penzance, and Elizabeth Lubert [X], widow of the Town of Penzance, married at Madron in August 1814; of John Rowe, bachelor of St Just in Penwith, and Elizabeth Eddy [X], spinster St Just in Penwith, married at St Just in Penwith in November 1820; and of John Rowe [X] of Paul and Elizabeth Reynolds [X] married at Paul in October 1823.]

It seems that six children were born to this Richard and Mary:

6.1 John Rowe (c1852…1907) m. Elizabeth Green (c1855…1885)

John Rowe, baptised 1853 at Madron Cornwall, son of RICHARD ROWE and MARY DAVY, married Elizabeth Green, the daughter born c1855 of FREDERICK GREEN and PHILLIPA WATERS. John, bachelor carpenter aged 25 of Stoke Climsland, son of farmer Richard Rowe, and Elizabeth Green, spinster aged 22 of Stoke Climsland, daughter of mine captain Frederick Green, were married at Stoke Climsland in April 1877. Stoke Climsland is a village in the River Tamar Valley, East Cornwall.

John, a carpenter, and Elizabeth emigrated to Australia with the Green family aboard the Samuel Plimsoll, sailing from Plymouth in June 1877.

John and Elizabeth's children were:
Note that the births of both Thomas Rowe, son of John Rowe and his wife Elizabeth Green, and of his cousin Laura Wills, daughter of Samuel Kestle Wills and his wife Phillipa Ann Green [Elizabeth's older sister] were registered at Boorowa in 1878. Boorowa, between Cowra and Yass and 243km west-southwest of Sydney and 133kn south-southwest of Orange, is a farming town though gold, copper and iron have been mined locally. It was connected to Sydney by rail in 1874.

The death of Elizabeeth Rowe née Green, daughter of Frederick and Phillippa, was registered at Lithgow in 1885.

6.1.1 Thomas Rowe

Thomas Rowe had four children:

6.1.2 Laura Rowe (1879…1933) m. Thomas Stephen Hobbs (…1949)

Laura Rowe married Thomas S Hobbs in 1898, the event being duly registered at Redfern NSW. Their children were:

The NSW Electoral Roll shews Thomas Stephen Hobbs [mine manager], Laura Hobbs [home duties] and Laura Dorothy Eileen Hobbs [clerk] at Bungaree road, Wentworthville, in 1930 and 1933.

The death of Laura Hobbs née Rowe, daughter of JOHN and ELIZABETH, was registered at Parramatta in 1933.The death of Thomas Stephen Hobbs, son of STEPHEN and MARY, was registered at Lithgow in 1949.

6.1.2.1 Albert Thomas Stephen Hobbs (1899…1975) m. Mary Alison Bowen (1896…1975)

The birth of Albert Thomas Stephen Hobbs [“Bert”] on 28 March 1899 was registered to THOMAS S and LAURA at Lithgow. Bert married Mary Alison Bowen [“Molly”] near Orange nsw circa 1927. Mary's birth on 27 September 1896 had been registered to THOMAS C and EMILY J at Orange. Children of Thomas and Mary included:

The NSW Electoral Roll shews Albert Thomas Stephen Hobbs [railway employee] at Allenby road, Orange, Orange, in 1930, with Mary Alison Hobbs [home duties] at Nile street, Ophir near Orange. Albert and May Alison Hobbs [home duties] at 170 Cumberland road, Auburn, in 1936 and 1937. Albert [railway fireman] and Mary Alison Hobbs were at 194 Derby street, Penrith, in 1943 and 1949. The death on 19 September 1975 of Mary Alison Hobbs, 'late of Penrith', daughter of THOMAS CHARLES and EMILY JANE, was noted next day in the Sydney Morning Herald. The death on 3 October 1975 of Albert Thomas Stephen Hobbs née Bowen, 'late of Penrith', son of THOMAS STEPHEN and LAURA, was noted in the Sydney Morning Herald on 4th inst..

6.1.2.2 Laura Dorothy Eileen Hobbs (1908…2001) m. Leslie George Keeble (1900…1975)

Laura Dorothy Eileen Hobbs (Dorothy) married Leslie George Keeble (Les) at Parramatta in 1934. Les was the son of (and perhaps the only child of) WILLIAM G KEEBLE and his wife HARRIET; his birth was registered at Woolahra NSW in 1900. Leas and Dorothy had children:

The NSW Electoral Roll shews Leslie George Keeble [motor salesman] at Station street, Wentworthville, in 1930 and at 2 Station street, Wentworthville, in 1933; Leslie George Keeble [sales manager] and Laura Dorothy Eileen Keeble [home duties] at Bungaree road, Wentworthville, in 1936; at 2 Station street, Wentworthville, in 1937; George [sales organise] and Laura at 37 Campbell street, Parramatta, in 1943, 1949, and 1954, joined there by Leslie Barrie Keeble [clerk] in 1958 and also by Robert Wayne Keeble [insurance officer] in 1963.

The death of Laura Dorothy Eileen Keeble in October 2001, aged 93, 'late of Parramatta', was noted in the Sydney Morning Herald on 11 October 2001..

6.2 Richard Rowe (1855…) m. Susan Stevens

Richard Rowe, baptised June 1855, St Hilary Cornwall was the son of RICHARD ROWE and MARY DAVY. Richard married Susan Stevens, perhaps the daughter born 1851 of ELIZABETH STEVENS. Richard and Susan emigrated to Australia with the Green family and Richard's brother John aboard the Samuel Plimsoll in 1877.

7. Joseph Wills m.(1824) Jane Kempthorne

Bachelor Joseph Wills and spinster Jane Kempthorne were married in the Parish Church of St Kew CON in November 1824 after publication of Banns; both were noted as residents of the parish and made their marks in the register; neither had details of parents recorded. It is possible that Jane was the daughter of JAMES and JANE KEMPTHORNE baptised at Sithney CON in August 1802, or (less likely) of SAMUEL and MARGARET KEMPTHORNE baptised at Monaccan CON in August 1793. If the former then Sithney-baptised siblings would seem to include Elizabeth (born 18 November 1808, baptised 27 January 1809), Mary (baptised 22 April 1810), Anne (baptised 9 February 1812 when three weeks old) and Edward (born 27 July 1815, baptised 3 September 1815; father a miner, residence Lower Prispidnic). The Phillimore transcripts (p105) list the marriage of James Kempthorn and Jane Pascoe at St Sithney on 4 May 1802.

Between 1822 and 1836 Jane bore Joseph six children:
Joseph and Jane were possibly also the parents of:
St Kew parish registers also note a Joseph Wills as the father of :

A Joseph Wills, aged 38, of L Ammel, was buried at St Kew in June 1838.

The Francis Profit Wills who married Charity Ann Kendall, 37, of Amble, daughter of labourer William Kendall, at St Kew on 12 July 1893, was the son of farmer Joseph Wills of St Minver and Matilda Proffitt (married at St Minver on 22 June 1844. At the time of his marriage Francis was noted as a bachelor mariner of full age, of St Minver, His father Joseph was a son of farmer Anthony Wills.
.

7.1 Samuel Wills (1830…1893) m. Johanna Kendell (b1828c…1893)

Samuel Wills, male child of JOSEPH WILLS and JANE KEMPTHORNE his wife, was christened in 1830 at St Kew Cornwall, the church, where Joseph had married Jane Kempthorne on 1824.

Samuel Wills married Johanna Kendell in January 1852 St Kew: Samuel was a bachelor labourer of Amble, of full age (over 21) and son of Joseph, also a labourer. Johanna, daughter of farmer Thomas Kendall, was noted as a spinster of full age from St Breoch Cornwall. The ceremony was witnessed by Thomas Wills and Sarah Williams. It is likely that Johanna was the daughter of THOMAS KENDALL and SUSANNA KESTELL, married at St Breock in 1821, and that she had siblings Elizabeth Ann Kendall, christened at the Mt Zion Independant Church, Fowey Cornwall in 1827, Jane Kendal (christened at St Austel in 1829) and Sophia Kendall (christened at St Austell in 1831). Johanna may have been born in Devonport DEV

A Samuel Wills, 20, unmarried and a native of St Kew, is listed in the 1851 St Kew census returns as a servant in the large household of (p 25, entry 86, Penpont?) of William and Barbara Grose. William Grose was a farmer of 230 acres, employing eight labourers.

Samuel Kestel and Phillipa Ann Wills landed in Sydney on 27 August 1877 aboard the Samuel Plimsoll. The shipping lists note that Samuel, 24, was a miner born in Cornwall to Samuel Wills living in Cornwall, and that Phillipa, 23, was born in Cornwall to Frederick Green. Both could read and write and were members of the Church of England. They had no relatives residing in the colony, but brought with them their children Phillipa, 2, born in Cumberland, and Thomas, an infant born in Cornwall. Also aboard the Samuel Plimsoll were Phillipa Ann's parents, siblings and other relatives.

Phillipa Ann Wills née Green died at Orange (?or Cobar) NSW in October 1905, after a fall from a sulky on ?Lucknow Road. Samuel remarried after Phillipa Ann's death; his second wife was Lydia Clara Keays née Kilpatrick. The marriage was registered at Cobar NSW in February 1906. .

7.1.1.1.1 James Phillip Flynn (1897…1924)

James Phillip Flynn, born August 1897 at Lucknow NSW, was the first-born of JAMES PHILLIP FLYNN and PHILLIPA WILLS.

James Phillip Flynn died 9 March 1924 at Cordeaux Dam NSW. After working for the NSW Government Railways, James Flynn (born 1897) had joined the NSW police force on 4 July 1921. He was initially stationed at Darlinghurst, an inner-Sydney suburb, on 18 August 1921, and transferred to Cordeaux Dam construction site, near Appin NSW, on 27 June 1923. He was 6' (1.83m) tall and weighing 12st. 9lb., of fair complexion with blue eyes and wavy or bushy brown hair.

On 9 March 1924 Constable James Flynn arrested a man named Stintson, a driver at the dam site, on a charge of breaking and entering. Site resident engineer Guy Chalmers Clift, aged 37, used his car to drive Flynn and his prisoner to the lock-up at Campbelltown; Stintson was un-handcuffed, Flynn apparently relying on his own renowned great strength to control the prisoner. After travelling some 11 miles and when within about one mile of Appin, Stintson drew a revolver, placed it at Flynn's side and fired, killing James Flynn almost instantly. Clift stopped the car immediately and struggled with Stintson, during which Clift was shot in the groin before wresting the gun from Stintson, who ran off down the road and escaped. Clift managed to drive to Camden hospital; Stintson was arrested by mounted policeman Constable Porter that evening near the Appin hotel. Clift, a married family man, died that evening. William George Gordon Simpson, a veteran of WW1, who had pleaded that he had accidentaly shot Flynn and Clift while attempting suicide, was hanged at Long Bay Gaol on 10 December 1924 for the Appin murders of Guy Chalmers Clift and Police Constable James Flynn.

Edmund married Amelia Gladys Ryan [“Glad”] at Rydalmere in August 1925: Amelia's birth seems to have been registered at Wallerawang in 1901, the daughter of JAMES and CAROLINE. The 1949 NSW Electoral Roll shews Phillipa Catherine Caroline Flynn [cannery hand] at 52 Fitzroy street, Cowra; the 1954 Roll shews John Edward Downes [farmer] at Broula, via Cowra, and Phillipa Catherine Caroline Downes [home duties] at Grenfell road, Cowra.

[Much of the information in this section is from the recollections of Elinna Wills to Susan Ellyard, with corrections and additions from Lowell Nicolaus in Sept2004 and further research by this author in 2011]
Thomas Henry Wills, an engineer born November 1876, son of SAMUEL WILLS and his wife JOHANNA KENDALL, lived with his family near Nymagee in western NSW and probably Lucknow in the NSW Central Tablelands. Thomas prospected in NSW and went to Tasmania and/or New Zealand mining copper and gold. He emigrated to America when he was 29, departing Sydney on 24 September 1906 and arriving in San Francisco on 20 October 1906 aboard the Ventura, giving his calling as an engine driver. Arriving just a few months after the great earthquake and fire in San Francisco [18 April 1906, magnitude about 7.9Mm] he had difficulties finding a place to live, eventually finding a boarding house across the Bay. He worked in the ship yards until 1917
.
An engineer, Thomas married twice, (?once in Sacramento?); his first wife, Winifred Gilman or Gilbert, bore him two children:

Thomas married Katherine Davenport after his divorce from his first wife. Thomas had no issue by Katherine, who from a previous marriage already had two children, William Penaluna and Effie Penaluna (Effie married George C Nicolaus and had two children, George Nicolaus Jr. and Lowell Keith Nicolaus (wife Jan; Lowell served in the USS Saint Paul 1967-68 off Vietnam, moved back to Oregon in June 1994).

The following funeral notice was printed in a (presumably) Sacramento newspaper:
