Provenance

A not particularly common name though with many variants, the "Ellyard" families appear in early records in northern England (Northumberland, Yorkshire) and southern England (Kent, Sussex).

[the following is from Wayne Elyard on genforum.com (13 December 2001), in replies to a query from Jak Elyard]
There seem to have been several distinct [Ellyard] family groups, notably in the Sussex/Kent region, also London itself, and other branches in Hampshire and Norfolk. Add to this some Elyards in Northumberland circa 1700, who originally used the spelling "ayleyard", it makes the whole thing quite difficult to chart. Also, the variant "Eliard" comes up often, and there is evidence that some Eliard's came from France.

Circa 1600 there were at least three "Ellyard" families in St Peter's, Kent, as detailed below. For the next 100 years there were a lot of Elyard/Ellyard/Elliards around the London area, most notably referring to "St Botolph Without Aldgate". It was in the mid-late 1700s when Elyards appear again in Kent, this time around Rainham and Gillingham.

Early Generations

1 John Elliot m.(c1724) Ann
[Nafferton near Driffield in the East Riding of Yorkshire]

This Ellyard family, in early days known as Elliot or Eliot, has been traced back to Nafferton near Driffield in the East Riding of Yorkshire. There about 1724, husbandman John Elliot married Ann , the couple having three children baptised:

Dr William Elyard (born 21 November 1771, London) married Sarah Gilbert in Rainham, Kent, in abt 1802, and then emigrated to Australia. [These were the ancestor of Wayne Elyard]. From an index to depositors in the Tallahassee Freedman's Savings and Trust in the USA. Researchers using this index may quickly determine whether an individual held an account at Tallahassee's Freedman's Bank, and with the application number listed locate the Register entry on the National Archives microfilm.
The people who created the Tallahassee Register numbered the applications in two series. Numbers 1 to 1380 [August 1866 - July 1871] are the first series. Many records refer to other family members who may not hold an account themselves.
